Eagles Use Analytics Team To Help In-Game Decisions

Sep 27, 2017 10:50 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles are believed to be one of about 12 teams relaying analytical information to coaches during the game.

The Eagles went for it on fourth-and-8 late in the first half against the New York Giants in Week 3.

"Yeah, it was something I discussed with the guy that's helping me upstairs with some of the analytics," Pederson said.

Coaching assistant/linebackers coach Ryan Paganetti, a Dartmouth grad with a degree in Economics who spent two years as an analyst for the team works in this capacity for the Eagles on game day, as does director of football compliance Jon Ferrari

Said offensive coordinator Frank Reich: "After [Pederson has] made the third-down call the phones can be silent for a few seconds, and one of the guys might chime in and say, 'Hey coach, if this ends up short fourth-and-2,' -- I'm using fake terminology -- 'it's green, go for it. The charts say go for it.' Or, 'Hey, if it's anything less than fourth-and-3, we're good. Other than that, it's your call, Coach.' Or, 'Anything more than fourth-and-10, no.'

"The analogy I think of is kind of like a stoplight. There's green, there's yellow and there's red, and then there's shades of green, there's shades of yellow and then there's shades of red. So some of them are, 'Hey, it's green'; 'yellow, proceed with caution,' -- and that's how it operates."

Carson Wentz Offered Jake Elliott Game Check Before GW FG

Sep 27, 2017 8:10 AM

Jake Elliott kicked the Philadelphia Eagles to a dramatic win over the New York Giants on Sunday with a 61-yard, game-winning field goal and may have earned himself some extra money in the process.

Carson Wentz told Elliott on the sideline moments for the kick that he'd give the kicker his game check if he made the longest field goal in Lincoln Financial Field history.

Wentz's game check is worth $31,764.71 and Elliott is on a one-year, $465,000 deal.

The quarterback has said that the two will work the deal out.

Eagles To Give Bigger Role To Wendell Smallwood Without Sproles

Sep 26, 2017 11:37 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to give Wendell Smallwood a bigger role with Darren Sproles out for the season.

Smallwood had 12 carries for 71 yards in Week 3.

"I think Wendell on third down specifically, Corey as well, they're going to have to step up and assume that role," Doug Pederson said.

Smallwood is a second-year back out of West Virginia who can run between the tackles and off the edge with the potential of being a good receiving option.

Darren Sproles Suffers Torn ACL, Broken Arm On Same Play

Sep 25, 2017 11:47 AM

Darren Sproles suffered a broken arm and a torn ACL on the same play in Week 3.

Sproles is having surgery on his arm Monday and will require surgery on his knee. Sproles will miss the remainder of the season.

Trainers were originally looking at Sproles' knee, but he was able to walk off under his own power, holding his right arm in obvious pain.

Sproles rushed for 61 yards this season on 15 carries. He also had seven receptions for 73 yards.

Dean Blandino: Kirk Cousins's Fumble Wasn't A Fumble

Sep 12, 2017 8:50 AM

Kirk Cousins fumbled late against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, leading to a game-clinching touchdown.

The play was reviewed and looked like an incomplete pass rather than a fumble.

Official Brad Allen ruled that it was a fumble and an Eagles touchdown. When he went to replay, the decision was upheld by the NFL's senior vice president of officiating, Alberto Riveron.

However, Dean Blandino, the man Riveron replaced as the league's head of officiating, saw the play differently. He now works for FOX as an analyst.

"Yeah, there was one angle where it looked like it may have been a fumble," Blandino said alongside Mike Pereira. "But the shot from behind, the end zone look, the hand was coming forward and it looked like a forward pass. It's a close call, but we both felt it was a forward pass."

Some Eagles Believe Schwartz Is Making Power Play Against Pederson

Sep 9, 2017 9:46 AM

Doug Pederson has received substantial criticism from former NFL general manager Mike Lombardi.

“Everybody knows Pederson isn’t a head coach. He might be less qualified to coach a team than anyone I’ve ever seen,” Lombardi said during The Ringer video segment. “When will the Eagles admit their mistake? Will they throw away 2017 by stubbornly sticking to the Pederson Principle?”

The criticism of Pederson from Lombardi has led Eagles' players and coaches to make the link to Jim Schwartz, who has worked with Lombardi in the past.

Schwartz is defensive coordinator of the Eagles and a former head coach.

“He walks around the building like he thinks he’s the head coach,” one player said.

One Eagles staffer said the only coach who probably doesn’t think Schwartz is trying to undercut Pederson is Pederson.

The Eagles haven't had a defensive-minded head coach in more than 20 years.
