Doug Pederson Wants Eagles To Be More 'Aggressive' After Loss

Oct 31, 2016 8:19 AM

After Sunday night's loss to the Dallas Cowboys in overtime, Doug Pederson wants to be more "aggressive" in his play-calling for the Philadelphia Eagles going forward.

The Eagles held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before the Cowboys forced overtime and then scored on the first drive of the extra period.

Philadelphia punted to Dallas rather than attempt a 54-yard field goal with 6:34 left in regulation. The kick would have given the Eagles a 10-point lead again. Caleb Sturgis had hit 17 straight field goals, including a 55-yarder just before halftime.

"(I) felt comfortable doing that, making that decision," Pederson said. "The thing is, field position at that time is critical. [Sturgis] did kick the one before half, which was an excellent kick with no time left on the clock. Had we executed on the third-down play, we would have been in a little better position to kick the field goal at that time and we just didn't execute on the play before."

Pederson talking about learning lessons from the loss, and he said: "I think just, for me, staying aggressive, No. 1."

Jordan Matthews: Wentz-Prescott Could Be New Manning-Brady

Oct 27, 2016 7:51 AM

When the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys face off on Sunday night, rookie quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Dak Prescott will be on center stage.

Jordan Matthews believes Wentz-Prescott could be the NFL's next great rivalry.

"Peyton [Manning] and [Tom] Brady, that's an extremely high honor to be mentioned with those guys," Matthews said.

"I have spoken highly of Carson and know that he could be named with those guys just with more years of playing. And I have a high respect for Dak, too. … You're talking about a guy who is a poised quarterback, he knows what it means to be a leader, he knows what it means to be game-planned for. And I feel like Carson is the same way. The thing I love about Carson is he has that same ability but he also has a chip on his shoulder. So you're talking about two guys that could potentially be like a Brady and Peyton rivalry. The only difference is, you're going to get this two times a year, and possibly playoffs."

Oct 23, 2016 9:02 PM

If the Minnesota Vikings advance to the NFC Championship Game this season, they will receive an extra draft pick from the Philadelphia Eagles as part of the Sam Bradford trade.

The extra pick would be a seventh rounder.

The announced deal had the Eagles receiving the Vikings' first-round draft pick in 2017, as well as a conditional fourth-rounder in 2018 in exchange for Bradford. It also stipulated that if the Vikings reach the NFC Championship Game this season, the conditional fourth-round pick in 2018 would become a third-round pick.

DeMarco Murray Thought He'd Be Traded Back To Cowboys

Oct 16, 2016 11:09 AM

DeMarco Murray was "95 percent sure" he was set to be traded back to the Dallas Cowboys by the Philadelphia Eagles before he was eventually moved to the Tennessee Titans.

"It was like 95 percent sure I was going to come back there," Murray told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram this week. "I have a lot of respect for those guys —€" the Jones family, Will [McClay], Coach [Jason] Garrett obviously and [Tony] Romo and Wit [Jason Witten], all those guys. I still consider them a great franchise, and they're great friends of mine.

"I was very close to going back there. There were some things that fell through and just didn't happen. I think everything happens for a reason. I'm here [in Tennessee], and I'm supposed to be here. They've got a pretty good young back over there as well."

The Eagles ultimately preferred trading Murray outside of the division.

Murray led the NFL with 1,845 yards and 13 TDs for the Cowboys in 2014 and has rebounded this season after a frustrating 2015 with the Eagles.

The Cowboys drafted Ezekiel Elliott after the trade for Murray fell through.

NFL Upholds 10-Game Suspension For Lane Johnson

Oct 11, 2016 1:43 PM

The NFL on Tuesday upheld the 10-game suspension for Philadelphia Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy for a second time.

"We're very disappointed that Lane Johnson has been suspended 10 games. His actions have affected the entire organization," Eagles vice president Howie Roseman said in a statement. "We are all working under a clearly-defined set of rules and regulations set forth by the NFL in the collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA.

"Moving forward, he has no choice but to hold himself accountable to Jeffrey Lurie, Coach [Doug] Pederson and his staff, his teammates, and to the entire organization and our fans. When he returns from suspension, we will continue to support him and welcome him back to the team. We are moving on with our preparations for this week's game in Washington."

Eagles Still Want To Avoid Designed Runs For Carson Wentz

Oct 7, 2016 8:17 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles want to avoid calling any designed runs for Carson Wentz in the early part of the season.

"Without giving away the game plan? No, I'm not," Doug Pederson said of designing runs for the rookie quarterback. "Now, this week for us, it's our fourth game of the season. As a staff, we've got to be extremely smart on how we handle that aspect of the game.

"Probably the deeper as you go into your regular season, if you are in a position to make the postseason, you might increase that a little bit. One of the things that I think defenses sometimes forget -- I'm not saying they forget it completely -- is the quarterback and the ability to run."

The Kansas City Chiefs drew up designed runs for Alex Smith last season with Pederson as offensive coordinator. Smith rushed for a career-high 498 yards in 2015.

"I think that was the advantage to us in Kansas City with Alex Smith, and his strength was the ability to run the football," Pederson said. "As we got deeper into the season, we dialed up a few more of those for him. I think it could be the same type of formula with Carson. Obviously, you want to protect him and you want to get through a full 16-game schedule. But I think the deeper you go, you increase it a little bit more."

Wentz said at North Dakota State he had 8-10 designed runs a game.
