Six NFL Head Coaches Have Total Roster Control

Sep 30, 2014 7:20 PM

The NFL has six head coaches with absolute final say on player personnel decisions in Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots, Mike Shanahan of the Washington Redskins, Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints, Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks, Chip Kelly of the Philadelphia Eagles and Jeff Fisher of the St. Louis Rams.

Belichick and Payton are the longest tenured coaches of the group, while Kelly and Fisher were hired over the past two offseasons.

The NFL's other head coaches have varying degrees of control depending on how the power dynamic with the general manager is structured.

Chip Kelly Has Final Say On Eagles' Personnel Moves

Sep 3, 2014 5:05 AM

Chip Kelly confirmed that he has final say on the roster moves of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles were more vague about how personnel was selected and evaluated during the tenure of Andy Reid.

"(We're) on the same page," said Kelly of his relationship with general manager Howie Roseman. "There hasn’t been a decision that’s been made personnel-wise since I’ve been here that I’ve felt one way and he’s felt the other way. We’ve never had a situation where ... two guys are standing on a soapbox.

“I think he sees big picture and I see big picture.”

Oct 25, 2014 7:30 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles could run as many as 1,200 plays this season in Chip Kelly's uptempo offense.

The New England Patriots played at a fast pace last season, but ran 66 plays per game compared to the Eagles' projection of 75 per game.

Michael Vick is typically getting the ball between 21 and 15 seconds remaining on the 40-second clock.

Kelly: Vick Has Been Best Player In Terms Of Attitude, Worth Ethic

Oct 31, 2014 2:22 PM

Michael Vick won the Philadelphia Eagles' starting quarterback job over Nick Foles in a battle that wasn't very close.

“You listen to our strength and conditioning guys," said Chip Kelly. "I asked them the other day from top to bottom if you can rank our guys, and Michael was our number one in terms of his attitude, work ethic, helping other players, everything in terms of weight room, off‑the‑field things. I’m not in the weight room every single day with those guys, but I always get input from them and what’s going on in there. Every facet of what you’ve asked him to do since he’s been here he’s been outstanding at.”

The Philadelphia Eagles have traded Felix Jones to the Pittsburgh Steelers for Adrian Robinson.

Eagles Don't Intend To Trade Nick Foles

Oct 17, 2014 12:11 AM

With Michael Vick winning the Philadelphia Eagles' starting quarterback job, Nick Foles will be the backup.

The Eagles have no plans to trade Foles, according to a source.

Foles started six games last season while Vick was injured, compiling a 1-5 record.

Foles has played well in preseason action, but Vick was the clear choice to win the job.

The Eagles also have Matt Barkley on the depth chart at quarterback.

Michael Vick Named Week 1 Starter By Eagles

Jul 4, 2014 3:16 AM

Michael Vick has been named the Week 1 starter of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Vick was in competition with Nick Foles to become the starting quarterback under Chip Kelly.

Vick was a Pro Bowler in 2010, but has struggled to stay healthy and effective in the past two seasons.

The Eagles will run an uptempo offense under Kelly, which could make Vick a perfect fit.

Vick Falls In Love With Football Again, Winning QB Competition

Jun 13, 2014 5:30 PM

Michael Vick has been the clear winner to date in the Philadelphia Eagles' quarterback battle.

Vick completed his first nine passes for 105 yards while rushing for another 20 in the Eagles' preseason win over the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.

"I think this year within this offense taught me how to prepare myself again and how to gain that confidence," Vick told NFL.com's Aditi Kinkhabwala afterward. "How to approach the game because it all starts with your belief and your faith. I know I can get it done. I know I'm one of the best in this league."

Nick Foles moved the ball well but had turnover for the second straight week.

"I'm having fun playing football," Vick told NFL.com's Aditi Kinkhabwala after the win. "I fell in love with the game again. I thank coach (Chip) Kelly for getting me back to that point."

Reid Attempted To Trade For Alex Smith Several Times With Eagles

Sep 16, 2014 2:47 AM

Andy Reid attempted to trade for Alex Smith on multiple occasions while he was with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Smith struggled early in his career with the San Francisco 49ers amid a revolving door of offensive coordinators, but Reid continued to believe in his potential. Reid was always impressed by Smith's intelligence and how he showed improvement whenever he watched him on film.

Reid was able to acquire Smith from the 49ers this offseason.

“It’s a good fresh start for him,” Reid said of Smith. “He loves to play, and he’s tough.”

Be The GM: LeSean McCoy Or Jason Pierre-Paul

Oct 30, 2014 11:29 AM

The New York Giants have been Eli Manning's team since the 2005 season when he became the full time starter and even though he has won two Super Bowls, he is now 32 years old and hasn't been as effective of a quarterback in the regular season as he has in those two playoff runs. Manning ranks 17th in active career passer rating and those two factors led us to pick a 24-year-old pass rusher in Jason Pierre-Paul.

For the Philadelphia Eagles, the decision to pick LeSean McCoy was easy and obvious to be matched up against Pierre-Paul in an NFC East "Be The GM" showdown.

Pierre-Paul is entering his fourth NFL season, but he won't run 25 until the end of February. Pierre-Paul immediately showed promise at getting to the quarterback in his rookie season and then completely broke out in 2011 with 16.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Pierre-Paul's production trailed off considerably last season as he battled persistent back issues that eventually led to surgery in June.

Assuming he returns healthy, Pierre-Paul can return to overwhelming offensive linemen with his combination of size, strength and quickness.

McCoy just turned 25, meaning he is entering his prime as a running back. McCoy was on his way to rushing for over 1,000 yards for the third straight season before suffering a concussion in November that kept him out of the final four games. McCoy's yards per attempt dropped from 5.2 and 4.8 in 2010 and 2011 to 4.2 in 2012, but an injured and struggling offensive line and uncertainty at quarterback were undoubtedly contributing causes.

Similar to Marshall Faulk and Brian Westbrook, McCoy is an excellent dual-threat running back due to his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. McCoy has caught between 48 and 78 balls over the past three seasons.
