Vick's Advice To Rookies: 'Be Accountable'

Sep 3, 2014 12:42 AM

Michael Vick offered words of wisdom to his new peers at the NFL's Rookie Symposium. During his 30-minute discussion, the Eagles quarterback opened up about his crimes, his 23-month jail sentence as a result of an ugly dog-fighting scandal, his financial losses and his feelings of getting a second chance after it looked like his career had disappeared. "Be accountable for everything you do," Vick said. "You can't blame anybody else for your actions. The choices that you make each and every day are what shape your life." He also touched on numerous other topics, including how his career spiraling out of control was not a surprise and the dedication a player needs to succeed in the NFL. "As I sat in a prison cell, I understood why I was in there," Vick said. "That's bad. You don't want to end up that way. True story: I could see it all coming. I could see it happening. I thought about it. I asked myself, 'Should I stop doing what I was doing?' And I didn't stop. That's having no discipline."

Asomugha: No Receiver Makes Me Nervous

Sep 4, 2014 3:00 AM

In an interview this week, Nnamdi Asomugha said that none of the NFL's current wide receivers keep him up at night. "I guess if you're going to sit up there and play man against a guy, then that's a different story. If that was the case, there aren't guys that stand out in my mind in that way," Asomugha said. "There are a handful of guys that are really good at what they're doing from the receiver position, which is the easiest position in the NFL. There are a handful of guys that are good at it. There's not one particular guy that would concern me when I'm going into a game, but there are guys that you have to take notice of in the league." He continued. "I think if you talk to any cornerback in the league, we'll probably all tell you that," Asomugha said. "We go back and forth talking trash with our own teammates about it, 'Oh, all you have to do is go out there and catch a ball.' You know where you're going, we have no idea but we have to be perfect at it. So it's always fun banter going back and forth. Every position is difficult, but obviously receiver is ... my goodness."

Concern Over DeSean Jackson's Involvement With Rap Label

Dec 11, 2014 5:52 AM

Those close to DeSean Jackson are concerned about his involvement with Jaccpot Records. The Eagles wide receiver is the CEO of the emerging rap label. The level of concern ranges from "this is an unnecessary distraction in the prime of a promising football career," to "if he stays on this course he could end up in significant financial distress." There were whispers last fall that Jackson might be broke, but he has since signed a $51 million contract with Philadelphia. "It's just a different lifestyle and things like that I'm getting into," says Jackson, "and just kind of helping out my boys that I grew up with, and just hopefully make it a career as far as rapping and things like that."

Banner Regrets Handling Of Brian Dawkins

Sep 3, 2014 5:02 AM

Joe Banner, longtime president of the Eagles, expressed regret over how he handled the Brian Dawkins situation a few years ago. "I think that there were times where the true appreciation we had for the contributions of some of our players, you know, Brian Dawkins comes to mind the most," Banner said. "That certain situations were handled in a way that maybe the true, sincere, deep caring we had for those people didn't show the way it should have. I think those players were close enough to us personally to know how we felt, but I also understand how perceptions are driven. And those are people we care about deeply and cherish and value and were invaluable to what we were trying to do here, and there were times I wish that could have been handled a little cleaner, primarily from a public relations perspective." Dawkins signed with the Broncos as a free agent at a time when it appeared that the Eagles had low-balled him. He went on to play three solid seasons with Denver.
