Reid Praises Jackson's Effort Over Last Six Games

Sep 2, 2014 1:52 PM

While he didn't provide any insight into DeSean Jackson's future with the Eagles, Andy Reid did praise the receiver's attitude change towards the end of the season. "I was proud of DeSean for standing up," Reid said. "I thought he matured and showed maturity this season. I think he's done that every year he's been here. But he showed it, he stood up and admitted to everybody that he didn't handle things the right way. I will tell you the last six games, he did a nice job for us. I was proud of him for that. We're going through all of that right now. We're looking at everything right now. We haven't come to any conclusions on anything, but we're going through that. Again, you saw progress there. You saw a different attitude the last five or six games there. You've got to make sure you look at that part too." Jackson's rookie contract is set to expire and the Eagles have a huge decision to make. "We're going to go through and look at all that," Reid said. "We really haven't gotten to that point ... We're analyzing the free agents, we're analyzing what we did, we went through our team then we're going to analyze the draft and then you kind of put all that together and talk through it, where you have a feel on kind of the whole picture of the personnel side of it."

Andy Reid won't replace Juan Castillo as the defensive coordinator of the Eagles. Reid, explaining why it took him until the end of January to address the 2011 season, said he wanted to take some time to reflect on all aspects of his team after a disappointing 8-8 record. "Bottom line, we have to get better," he said. Reid said he didn't want to make excuses for the 2011 season, but "I'm very optimistic going forward."

Eagles, Jackson Making Little Progress Towards Deal

Jun 10, 2014 1:07 AM

Not much progress has been made between the Eagles and DeSean Jackson in regards to a new contract, according to a report. The talks have lingered over the Eagles for almost a year and it figures to make headlines even more as the wide receiver gets closer to free agency. Jackson just finished the final year of his four-year rookie contract that was scheduled to pay him $600,000 in 2011. According to a report, Jackson would accept a franchise tag from the Eagles if that's the move the team prefers. That doesn't seem to be a likely outcome, however, as the tag would command Jackson a 2012 salary of $9.5 million.

Eagles' Celek Unhurt In Car Crash

Oct 30, 2014 11:29 AM

Brent Celek was a passenger in a car involved in a DUI crash on Thursday morning. No one was hurt in the crash on a highway off-ramp near the Eagles' stadium in South Philadelphia. Police say the car's driver was driving too fast when he spun out and hit a concrete barrier around 2:30 a.m. The driver failed field sobriety testing and was arrested on DUI charges. Celek is not facing charges. Celek, who turned 27 on Wednesday, released a statement through the team saying he exhibited "extremely poor judgment." "I did not know that the person driving the car was over the legal limit, but that's not an excuse. I put my life in danger and was in a vehicle that put other people's lives in danger, and that's just not the way I operate. It will not happen again," he said in the statement.

Eagles Looking For More Size On Defense

Oct 27, 2014 2:05 PM

While blame belongs on the shoulders of first-year coordinator Juan Castillo, Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer wonders whether the Eagles struggled this season because their defense is too small. "Make no mistake about it, the Eagles are small. Taking into account a possible margin of error in deciphering depth charts and assuming every team fibs on its measurements, the Eagles' starting 11 is the shortest in the NFL, and only two other defenses are lighter," McLane writes. "The Eagles' average starting defensive player stands 6-foot-3/4 and weighs 240 pounds. The league average is 6-11/2 and 246.3 pounds. Because 3-4 defenses are generally larger than 4-3s - of which the Eagles are one - the disparity isn't as great when compared to teams that use a four-man front. "The average size of the league's 17 4-3 defenses is 6-11/2, 244.5 pounds; of 15 3-4 defenses the average is 6-13/4, 248.3."
