McNabb: I Want To Retire An Eagle

Oct 1, 2014 4:50 PM

Donovan McNabb has refuted reports by Deion Sanders that he wants out of Philadelphia, saying on Friday that he'd prefer to retire as a member of the Eagles. "I talk to Deion. Deion is a great guy, but Deion's not speaking for me. I want to retire as an Eagle," McNabb said. "I remember my rookie year, or I believe my second year, with Mayor Street, I said I wanted to bring a Super Bowl back to Philadelphia, go down Broad Street with the parade. The Phillies did it first, and I'm happy for them that they did, but myself and [free safety] Brian Dawkins, it's something we've talked about for years, being able to do that. We look forward to hopefully bringing it back next year, down Broad Street, I believe [the game's] in Miami, be able to hold that trophy up and say, 'We did it.' "

Eagles' Jim Johnson Has Melanoma

Oct 1, 2014 4:52 PM

The Eagles announced Jim Johnson would not be traveling to Hawaii to coach the NFC Pro Bowl defense, as he undergoes treatment for melanoma that has metastasized to his spine, where a tumor grew that caused his back problem. The team said Johnson, 67, wants to continue as the Eagles? defensive coordinator, as his treatment allows. The Eagles did not offer a prognosis; however, metastasized cancer is very serious, and team athletic trainer Rick Burkholder indicated that the tumor is not Johnson?s only cancer site. Burkholder said Johnson underwent melanoma surgery in 2001 but has been cancer-free in regular checkups since then. ?He presented with the back pain the week of the Minnesota game,? Burkholder told Daily News and Inquirer reporters in a hastily arranged call from the San Francisco airport, where Burkholder was changing planes for his trip to the Pro Bowl. ?We got him an MRI right after the Giants game, and the MRI looked funny. We thought he was going to have a disc problem, because of the symptoms, but it actually looked like there was a tumor beside this stress fracture in his spine. That alerted our doctors that something else might be going on. They did further testing, further scans, had him see some other doctors, and it looks like the melanoma is back, in his back. It?s manifested itself in a tumor in his spine. ?He?s already started treatment, radiation treatment. That?s the first course ... I think about 4 weeks of radiation, then we?ll take the next step from there.?

Eagles' Buckhalter Wants To Be A Starter

Oct 1, 2014 4:59 PM

Correll Buckhalter said Monday that he would prefer to be a starting running back, but he'd be open to staying with the Eagles if they go to more of a two-back system. "Ever since I came here, I wanted to be a starter in this league," said Buckhalter. "If the opportunity presents itself somewhere where I can start, naturally I'm going to take that. Most of the teams in this league use a two-back system. It keeps the players fresh, and it keeps defenses off-balance, as well. It's just up to the team and the coaches to make that decision." Bearded Reid On Superstitions: 'I Eat'

Jul 28, 2014 12:07 PM

Eagles' coach Andy Reid claims that he isn't a superstitious person even though he has joined some of his players in growing playoff beards. Reid thought long-and-hard when asked about holding onto any superstitions. "I eat," Reid concluded. Reid revealed that veteran safety Brian Dawkins asked him to join in on the team-building exercise, and he admitted that he probably wouldn't have done it had anyone else asked. "No, probably not," Reid said. "Donovan [McNabb] or Dawk, one of those two . . . If [Dawkins] would have asked me to stop eating, I'd be 120 pounds right now."
