McNabb Needs Surgery, Expects To Continue To Play

Aug 6, 2014 10:45 AM

Donovan McNabb tossed touchdown passes on a broken ankle and played an NFC title game with an agonizing rib injury. Now McNabb is taking his biggest health risk yet: playing with a severe abdominal strain that likely will need surgery and definitely will leave the five-time Pro Bowl quarterback in discomfort and pain all season. "Fortunately for me, I haven't got to the point where you just can't go," the Eagles' star said. "Once that happens, then I think the best way of handling this is not being out there. But I don't think that would ever happen." Trainer Rick Burkholder said rest will not fix the problem and McNabb can play if he can handle the pain. McNabb, who practiced Wednesday, does not have to be sidelined now for the sports hernia. "We're hoping it's something we'll be able to manage," Burkholder said. "The plan with Donovan is to allow him to participate, continue to rehabilitate him and we're going to take it on a day-by-day, game-by-game situation."

Akers Likely To Miss Next Sunday's Game

Nov 25, 2014 9:57 AM

David Akers probably will miss Philadelphia's game at Kansas City next week because of a torn hamstring, while Donovan McNabb's status is uncertain. Akers, who collapsed to the ground in pain after the opening kickoff, fought through the injury to make a 23-yard field goal with 9 seconds left to lead the Eagles to a 23-20 victory over Oakland on Sunday. "It'll be a struggle for him to kick this week," Eagles coach Andy Reid said Monday.

Donovan In Pain

Jun 18, 2014 7:26 PM

Donovan McNabb is going to spend the rest of the season in pain. Already playing with a bruised chest and groin injury, McNabb has an abdominal strain that may not heal until after the season. While McNabb winced on many plays, the injuries hardly affected his numbers as he threw for 365 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Philadelphia's 23-20 victory over the Raiders on Sunday. "I'm a little banged up. It would be great to go out and not have any injuries, but in life, you have adversities," McNabb said.

Akers Hobbles To Game-Winning Field Goal

Oct 31, 2014 10:32 AM

David Akers could barely walk onto the field. He limped off it smiling. Fighting through a strained right hamstring that left him writhing in pain on the ground earlier, Akers made a 23-yard field goal with nine seconds left to lift the Philadelphia Eagles to a 23-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. Donovan McNabb, playing with chest and groin injuries, threw for 365 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Brian Westbrook caught a TD pass, ran for a score and had 140 yards receiving. Terrell Owens had nine catches, including his 100th career touchdown. After Kerry Collins threw a 27-yard TD pass to Doug Gabriel to tie it at 20 with 2:17 left, McNabb drove the Eagles downfield.

Westbrook To Start

Sep 5, 2014 1:05 PM

Brian Westbrook missed practice Friday with a knee injury, but was expected to start Philadelphia's game against Oakland on Sunday. Coach Andy Reid listed kept the Pro Bowl running back out as a precaution, just like he did with Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens earlier in the week. Reid said Westbrook was hit above the knee in Sunday's win against San Francisco and is listed as probable. "I gave him the day off just to let that thing rest up and have him ready for Sunday," Reid said Friday. McNabb, Owens and kicker David Akers all practiced Friday and will play against the Raiders.

McNabb And Owens Miss Wednesday's Practice With Injuries

Sep 5, 2014 1:17 PM

Donovan McNabb and Terrell Owens missed practice Wednesday with injuries, but it's unlikely either player won't play in Philadelphia's game against Oakland on Sunday. The two stars, who have reconciled their relationship after feuding all summer, connected for two touchdowns in the Eagles' 42-3 victory over San Francisco last Sunday. ``I don't think any injury will take me away from playing,'' McNabb said. ``It's serious enough that you have to pay attention to it.'' McNabb, who sat out one practice last week with a bruised chest, hurt his groin right before halftime against the 49ers. Owens has a nagging abdominal/groin injury. Also, kicker David Akers was limited in practice because of a hamstring injury.

Eagles Looking At Kickers With Akers Nursing Strained Hamstring

Aug 7, 2014 2:56 PM

The Eagles coaching staff was planning to use at least part of the next couple of days trying out place-kickers in the fear that David Akers may be lost for at least a week. Akers, who strained a hamstring in Sunday's 42-3 win over the 49ers, underwent an MRI Monday, and the initial reports were encouraging. "The MRI was a little better than we anticipated," Eagles coach Andy Reid said Monday. "We'll see how it goes here in the next couple of days." In the meantime, Reid said he and player personnel vice president Tom Heckert would begin to go over their list of kickers to see who may be available if Akers isn't ready for Sunday's game against Oakland. There are a couple of recently released veterans available -- Billy Cundiff, who was just let go by the Cowboys and Aaron Elling, who was recently released by Minnesota -- among them.

Owens Strained Lower Abdomen In Sunday's Win

Jan 31, 2014 5:21 AM

Terrell Owens gave Andy Reid an earful on the sideline, trying to persuade the coach to call his number one more time. There was no argument, no heated dispute, no name-calling or calling out. It was just T.O. wanting to rub it in against his former team. Reid simply ignored Owens and kept watching the backups finish out the Philadelphia Eagles' 42-3 victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. It was not a perfect day for Owens however. Reid said in his Monday press conference that Owens strained his lower abdomen. Owens told Reid it was bothering him after the game Sunday. Reid said the Eagles will see how Owens responds to treatment over the next few days, but Owens is not expected to miss any practice time.

TO Asks, Who Is Derek Smith?

Sep 17, 2014 5:49 PM

Just as he's done in Philadelphia, Terrell Owens annoyed some teammates in San Francisco with selfish acts, stinging comments and petulant behavior during his eight seasons playing for the 49ers. A few of those ex-mates are hoping to get a hard hit on Owens when San Francisco (1-0) visits the Eagles (0-1) on Sunday. "I'd love to get a shot on him," linebacker Derek Smith said. "I'm sure every defensive player would love to get a shot on him, because he's a premier player. You get a shot on a premier player, it looks good." Owens isn't talking to reporters except for a weekly appearance on a Miami radio station, but Smith is certain the All-Pro wideout is planning another one of his flamboyant celebrations if he scores. "He probably gets in front of the mirror every day, [saying] 'This is what I'm going to do this week,' practicing," Smith said. Owens said Friday in his interview on Miami's 790 AM that he didn't know who Smith was. "I have no clue who that guy is," Owens said. "Is he one of the top 100 linebackers in the league? Who is that?"

McNabb Gets The Go-Ahead To Play Sunday

May 22, 2014 12:57 AM

Donovan McNabb will be on the field this Sunday when the Eagles take on San Francisco at Lincoln Financial Field. The quarterback had missed practice on Wednesday because of a bruised chest, however, he has recently been given the green light to play. "He seems to be able to do everything," Reid said. "I was being a little bit cautious with him (Thursday) and he didn't want any part of that. He felt good and went out and made all the throws. I was not sure how he was going to do with the deep ball, but I think he answered that. He threw the ball well."
