Derek Carr Wants Jon Gruden To Push Him To Get Better

Jan 25, 2018 8:26 AM

Derek Carr is looking forward to playing for Jon Gruden and hopes the new Oakland Raiders coach pushes him to get better.

"I want him to be really hard on me because I want to win," he said. "He can pat me on the back and tell me he loves me, which he does, and he will. But at the same time, I want him to be hard on me and let's talk about, 'Hey, if we grade out at 90 percent, let's talk about the 10 percent I didn't do well.'"

Carr went through Gruden's QB Camp show on ESPN in 2014 before the Raiders drafted him out of Fresno State in the second round. He has since played for three different coaches.

Jack Del Rio Emerges As Top Candidate For Giants' DC Job

Jan 21, 2018 12:58 PM

Jack Del Rio is the leading candidate to become defensive coordinator of the New York Giants under presumptive head coach Pat Shurmur.

Del Rio won't be doing it for money if he becomes the Giants' defensive coordinator. He is scheduled to average $6 million per year from the Raiders over the next three years, and any salary he is paid by the Giants simply will be offset against his Oakland contract.

Del Rio was fired by the Raiders after the 2017 season in order for the team to hire Jon Gruden.

NFL Concludes Raiders Complied With Rooney Rule On Jon Gruden Hire

Jan 19, 2018 4:13 PM

The NFL has concluded that the Oakland Raiders complied with the Rooney Rule when they hired Jon Gruden as head coach.

The "Rooney Rule" requires NFL teams to consider at least one minority candidate before making an offer to a head coaching candidate. The team officially hired Gruden on Jan. 6.

Reports have indicated the Raiders would not have fired Jack Del Rio without a commitment from Gruden.

Rich Gannon Declined Offer To Coach Oakland's QBs

Jan 11, 2018 8:09 AM

Jon Gruden offered Rich Gannon the chance to coach quarterbacks with the Oakland Raiders, but the former player declined.

Gannon played three seasons for Gruden during the coach's first stint with the Raiders.

The Raiders hired Gruden and signed him to a 10-year contract this week. Gannon said he realized on the flight to Oakland for the coach's introductory news conference Tuesday that he couldn't make the time commitment needed to be on Gruden's staff.

"I really came to my senses probably on the flight up there yesterday to go to the press conference and just realized that to work alongside Jon Gruden it takes a special person," Gannon said. "It takes a person with great energy, passion and commitment and, more importantly, time. I didn't think it would be fair to myself, my family or even to Jon not to be all in in with him."

Raiders Fired Del Rio, Obliged Rooney Rule After Gruden Commitment

Jan 10, 2018 10:56 AM

Mark Davis confirmed he didn't decide to fire Jack Del Rio until he received a commitment from Jon Gruden to become head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Davis then conducted the required Rooney Rule interviews.

Davis and Gruden first met in Florida two months ago.

Del Rio and Gruden share the same agent, which complicated the situation for all parties.

If Gruden hadn't agreed to join the Raiders, Davis admitted he likely would have retained Del Rio.

The Raiders interviewed Tee Martin and Bobby Johnson before formally announcing Gruden's hiring.

Source Concerned Derek Carr May Not Like Jon Gruden's Coaching Style

Jan 4, 2018 3:52 PM

According to a league source, there is concern that Derek Carr may not be wired in a way that's conducive to the coaching style of Jon Gruden.

Gruden tends to ride his quarterbacks to maximize their potential.

“Jon Gruden is not easy to deal with,” PFT Live co-host Chris Simms said by phone on Thursday. “He’s in your face, he’s blunt, he’s extremely honest. At the same time, he’ll be extra hard on a quarterback if he knows the kid has talent. The quarterback has to remember it’s only because he wants him to be better and knows he can be better. . . . If he wasn’t yelling at you, that’s the bigger concern. It’s all for the greater good. It’s only going to make you a better quarterback.”

Carr’s gigantic contract has a fairly early out for the team, allowing them to dump him after 2018 with only a $7.5 million cap charge, at a cash outlay over two years of less than $48 million.

Buccaneers Were Unwilling To Match Raiders' Offer To Jon Gruden

Jan 3, 2018 10:39 AM

There had been speculation that Jon Gruden was nearing a return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but they announced that Dirk Koetter would remain as head coach.

Gruden was pursued by the Buccaneers and Raiders but chose the situation with the Raiders as he was given more money and more power.

“By Friday, Oakland had emerged as a major player, talking to Gruden’s agent,” Kaufman said. “Nobody talks to Gruden directly, everything goes through Gruden’s agent, as it should be. And Gruden’s agent, operating from a position of tremendous strength, tremendous leverage. . . . Here comes Oakland. Mark Davis, Al’s son. And in the discussions with the agent, it’s basically the agent gets the impression, ‘Whatever you guys want. Let’s make this happen. Whatever you want.’ Well, when he gets back to the Glazers and basically says, ‘We have other options, and [a] concrete option in Oakland, and they’re willing to do this, and do this, and do this.’ And I think it reached a point where the Glazers, talking among themselves, the co-chairmen, said, ‘We can’t go that far. We’re not willing to go that far. A stake in the team. $10 million dollars. Total authority. We can’t do it. Doesn’t make any sense.’ So God bless Jon. Good luck. And at that point they reached the same conclusion that I wrote 10 days ago: If you can’t get Gruden, give Koetter another chance. . . . To even suggest that the Bucs had no interest in Jon Gruden coming back to One Buc Place. How naive can you be?”
