Goldman Sachs Considering Exit From Raiders' Vegas Deal

Feb 1, 2017 12:32 AM

Goldman Sachs is re-evaluating its relationship with the Oakland Raiders' planned deal in Las Vegas following the withdraw of Sheldon Adelson from the project.

Adelson had previously committed $650 million to get the $1.9 billion project completed but announced the removal of his stake in a statement Monday.

Adelson has a longstanding business relationship with Goldman Sachs.

A source told ESPN's Darren Rovell that the Raiders' relocation application to the NFL filed on Jan. 19 also did not include Adelson.

Goldman Sachs had been in line to help underwrite Raiders owner Mark Davis' financial commitment, but with the financial giant now re-evaluating its position and Adelson's withdrawal, the entire deal could be in danger.

With the Raiders franchise being the largest financial chip in Davis' portfolio, the inclusion of Goldman Sachs would be relied upon to carry out a deal.

Any relocation to Las Vegas must be approved by 24 of the 32 NFL team owners. A vote is expected during league meetings in March in Phoenix.

Adelson Family Withdraws From Raiders' Stadium In Vegas

Jan 31, 2017 11:24 AM

The family of Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson have withdrawn as investors in a proposed $1.9 billion, 65,000-seat domed football stadium intended to bring the NFL’s Oakland Raiders to Southern Nevada.

In a statement issued late Monday, Adelson said his family “will no longer be involved in any facet of the stadium discussion.”

Adelson said he was surprised by the Raiders’ submission of a proposed lease agreement to the Las Vegas Stadium Authority on Thursday, noting that it has “sent shock waves through our community.”

“It was certainly shocking to the Adelson family,” the statement said. “We were not only excluded from the proposed agreement, we weren’t even aware of its existence.”

The Raiders have widely been expected to announce plans to relocate to Las Vegas during this offseason, though they would remain in Oakland until the stadium is built.

“It’s clear the Raiders have decided their path for moving to Las Vegas does not include the Adelson family,” Adelson’s statement said. “So, regrettably, we will no longer be involved in any facet of the stadium discussion.”

Adelson said “while this is not the result my family was hoping for, I am very appreciative of the countless people who have given considerable time and energy to this process, especially so many of our elected officials who have made this a top priority for Southern Nevada.”

Raiders File Paperwork For Move To Las Vegas

The Oakland Raiders have officially filed their paperwork to relocate to Las Vegas.

The team's relocation to Las Vegas must be approved by three-fourths of the NFL's team owners. The vote for relocation is expected to take place on March 26-29 at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix.

"The application will be reviewed in the coming weeks by league staff and the stadium and financing committees," the NFL said in a statement.

Raiders Officially File Paperwork To Relocate To Las Vegas

Jan 20, 2017 8:14 AM

The Oakland Raiders have officially filed their paperwork to relocate to Las Vegas.

The NFL's owners will vote on the matter in March.

The Raiders are expected to remain in Oakland while their new stadium in Las Vegas is built with its current estimate for readiness for the 2020 season.

There are still questions, however, on how the $1.9 billion stadium in Las Vegas will be funded. The original plan contained $650 million in contributions from the Adelson family, $500 million from the Raiders and $750 million in Clark County hotel room tax revenue.

Raiders Plan On Filing Relocation Papers To Las Vegas

Jan 14, 2017 9:08 PM

The Oakland Raiders plan on filing relocation papers to move to Las Vegas.

The move will be made official in the coming days, but the Raiders will need 24 votes from the NFL's owners to formally make the move.

The city of Oakland has made no progress to keep the team.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said "if the (Raiders) decide that they can't make it work in Oakland and they decide that they want to file for relocation, then their window is from when they get eliminated from the playoffs to Feb. 15."

No sources would estimate a vote count, but it's headed in the right direction to receive approval.

Bo Jackson Planned On Retiring From NFL Before Injury In Playoffs

Jan 12, 2017 6:32 PM

Bo Jackson revealed he had planned on retiring from the NFL after the 1990 season. Jackson still had a contract with the Los Angeles Raiders, but he planned to walk away to solely play baseball.

Jackson instead fractured and dislocated his left hip in the third quarter of the Raiders' playoff game in January of 1991.

Jackson thought it was simply a hip pointer, allowing him to return the next week to play against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game.

Jackson, who suffered from hip necrosis that required surgery for an artificial hip, never put on a football uniform again.

“That week, three or four days before the playoff game,’’ Jackson says, “I sat down with Linda (his wife and mother of their three children) and told her that I was going to announce my retirement. When the season was over, we had made my mind up that I was going to do that. That was the plan.

“Well, the man upstairs changed that plan.

“I’m not a very religious guy, but I believe in God, and I believe God works things out for a reason. If I had retired before my contract was over, I would have probably been hated by Raiders fans forever.’’

Jackson says he would have never played football knowing what he knows now.

“If I knew back then what I know now,’’ Jackson tells USA TODAY Sports, “I would have never played football. Never. I wish I had known about all of those head injuries, but no one knew that. And the people that did know that, they wouldn’t tell anybody.

“The game has gotten so violent, so rough. We’re so much more educated on this CTE stuff (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), there’s no way I would ever allow my kids to play football today.

“Even though I love the sport, I’d smack them in the mouth if they said they wanted to play football.

“I’d tell them, 'Play baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, just anything but football.’ ’’

Raiders Replace Offensive Coordinator Bill Musgrave With Todd Downing

Jan 11, 2017 12:55 AM

The Oakland Raiders will not retain Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator this offseason.

A source told Caplan that Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio told the rest of his staff Tuesday afternoon that quarterbacks coach Todd Downing has been promoted to offensive coordinator.

Downing received interest from at least two head coaching candidates for their offensive coordinator vacancies.

Del Rio, who also had Musgrave as his OC for with the Jaguars in 2003 and '04, was not afraid to criticize the offense this season.

The Raiders had one of the NFL's best offenses in 2016 with Derek Carr emerging as an MVP candidate.

Raiders Expected To Start Connor Cook Against Texans

Jan 4, 2017 8:51 AM

The Oakland Raiders are expected to start rookie Connor Cook against the Houston Texans in the playoffs this weekend.

It would mark the first time in the Super Bowl era that a rookie quarterback will be making his first start in a postseason game.

After Derek Carr broke his leg on Christmas Eve, Matt McGloin suffered a trapezius muscle injury in Oakland's final game of the season.

No Teams Finish 2016 In Top-10 In Both Offensive, Defensive DVOA

Jan 3, 2017 2:01 PM

The NFL has very few teams this season that excel in all facets of the game. Further evidence of this issue shows itself in the fact that there is only one team ranking in the top-10 in both Football Outsiders' Offensive and Defensive DVOA.

Last season, the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs ranked in the top-10 on both sides of the ball.

The Chiefs were the closest team to finish in the top-10 in both Offensive and Defensive DVOA at 13th and 14th.

The New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys finished the season ranked first and second in both Total DVOA and Weighted DVOA.

Raiders Noncommittal On Starting QB Against Texans

Jan 2, 2017 9:03 PM

Jack Del Rio is noncommittal on who will start for the Oakland Raiders at quarterback in their playoff game on Saturday at the Houston Texans.

Matt McGloin started in Week 17 and was hurt just before halftime, which gave the Raiders a chance to give Connor Cook his first opportunity to play.

"We'll see," Del Rio said. "We'll see. We'll see how the week goes. Between Connor and Matt we'll see who ... can get the most reps and who we feel the most comfortable [with] going into the game."

Cook completed 14 of 21 attempts for 150 yards.

"I thought Connor was pretty solid," Del Rio said. "I thought he handled himself pretty well. Ball security is so huge; we had a couple of ball security issues. That defense is pretty good and I thought, overall, he did a pretty solid job for a tough set of circumstances."
