Belichick, Carroll, Payton Considered Best HC's In NFL By Peers

Sep 3, 2014 11:09 PM

Bill Belichick is ranked as the best coach in the NFL, according to a poll of 30 league insiders.

Pete Carroll and Sean Payton are ranked second and third and are also in their first tier.

"The most important thing to me is the ability to control the offense, the defense and the special teams," a GM said in describing the ideal coach. "You can change and you can coach multiple things and you have the ability to teach almost every position group. Then you can lose any coach you want and replace from within because the head coach is the talent. Belichick is the ultimate model of that."

Belichick commmanded a 1 vote on 28 of 30 ballots.

In Tier 2 are Andy Reid at No. 4, Tom Coughlin at No. 5, Mike McCarthy and Mike Tomlin at No. 6, Jim Harbaugh at No. 8, John Harbaugh at No. 9, John Fox at No. 10 , Jeff Fisher at No. 11, Chip Kelly at No. 12, Bruce Arians at No. 13, Lovie Smith at No. 14 and Mavin Lewis at No. 15.

Tier 3 is led by Chuck Pagano At No. 16, followed by Rex Ryan (17), Mike Smith (18), Gus Bradley (19), Ken Whisenhunt (20), Mike McCoy (20), Marc Trestman (22) and Ron Rivera (23).

Tier 4 features Mike Zimmer (24), Jay Gruden (25), Bill O'Brien (26), Jim Caldwell (27), Doug Marrone (28), Joe Philbin (29), Jason Garrett (30), Mike Pettine (31) and Bruce Allen (32).

D.J. Hayden To Miss First Six Games Of Raiders' Season

Sep 6, 2014 2:28 PM

D.J. Hayden continues to struggle to stay on the field and will miss the first six games of the season after the Oakland Raiders placed him on the Physically Unable to Perform List.

Hayden missed all of last offseason as he recovered from his second heart surgery and missed time during the regular season with a groin injury.

But he injured his foot during OTAs this past summer, and though the injury originally was thought to be minor, Hayden still hasn't recovered fully.

Poll Says Raiders Are Least Desirable Team To Play For

Aug 31, 2014 10:01 AM

The Oakland Raiders are the least desirable NFL team to play for based on a survey of over 100 players.

They were posed the following question:

"The only way I'd play for [team name] is if they doubled my salary."

Of the 82 players who answered, 23 percent named the Raiders, followed by the Buffalo Bills (19 percent), Cleveland Browns (16 percent), Jacksonville Jaguars (9 percent) and Green Bay Packers (6 percent).

Charles Woodson was stunned when informed of the results of the leaguewide survey.

"I've never heard anybody that said they didn't want to play for the Raiders, so that's pretty shocking," he said. "I think you've got to take the attitude that if you didn't want to come here, it doesn't matter anyway. Over the years, I've known and talked to countless players that said, 'Man, I would love to come play in the silver and black.' So I think that poll might be kind of skewed."

The Raiders haven't reached the playoffs since they were a Super Bowl team in the 2002 season and have some of the worst facilities in the NFL.

Magic Johnson Expects Los Angeles To Have NFL Team Within Two Years

Aug 31, 2014 9:41 AM

Magic Johnson believes Los Angeles will have an NFL team within the next two years.

"I think for the first time, I truly believe we're going to get a team. Finally," Johnson said. "Everybody is on board. The city is on board. The business community is on board. The NFL is on board. Finally we have momentum. In the next couple years, at least in the next 24 months, I think one team will be coming. I don't know what team that will be, but I believe in the next two years we'll have a team."

Farmers Field, a proposed $1.5 billion downtown football stadium connected to an expanded Los Angeles Convention Center, is ready for construction.

The Oakland Raiders are considering relocating and have been in talks with San Antonio.

"It would be great to have the Raiders back in L.A., I would love for that to happen," Johnson said. "But that's going to be up to Mark and the Raiders and the NFL. But I would love to have the Raiders back in L.A. where they belong.

"We just want a team, we want a team in the worst way."

McCombs Interested In Buying Share Of Raiders

Aug 31, 2014 11:52 AM

Red McCombs told the San Antonio Express-News on Wednesday that he and his family would be interested in buying a piece of the Oakland Raiders "if that's what it would take to get them" to San Antonio.

McCombs, however, said he's not sure if Davis would seek out local investors if he were to relocate the team.

"But I told him if he wanted some, they wouldn't be hard to get," he told the newspaper.

Raiders owner Mark Davis "and two top lieutenants" met with several city officials in July about the "potential" of moving his team from Oakland to San Antonio, the Express-News reported last month.

McCombs owned the Minnesota Vikings from 1998 until 2004.
