Raiders' Loss To Seahawks Reveals Lack Of Depth

Jul 14, 2014 4:43 PM

The Oakland Raiders lost to the Seattle Seahawks by a final score of 21-3. The starting offense and defense played very briefly.

The loss demonstrated the lack of depth on the Raiders as they remake the roster under new general manager Reggie McKenzie.

“It tells you where we are from a depth standpoint,’’ new head coach Bruce Allen said. “We hold everybody to the same standard and we all have a job to do. So we all have to do a better job.’’

The Oakland Raiders will have a cultural change defensively this season under new head coach Dennis Allen and defensive coordinator Jason Tarver.

Al Davis served as the team's de facto coordinator until his passing last October.

Ranking The NFL's Oldest, Youngest Starters By Team

Oct 31, 2014 2:22 PM

The Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens have the three oldest collections of starters in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals are the youngest.

Former Vikings head coach Bud Grant had a popular saying that "for every young guy you start, you lose a game."

Pete Carroll worked for Grant early in his coaching career, but has had one of the youngest teams in the NFL during his tenure with the Seahawks.

"I was of that mindset in classic fashion until I had to be in charge of calling all the shots and then it just flipped in me that we don't know where we're going unless we find these guys out," Carroll said. "One of the really exciting things about playing guys early is ... by the middle and to the end of the season, you’ve developed players that fit into your rotations now that add to your depth and also add to the opportunity to not over-play your older guys."

Below is a full list with the rank in offense/defense in parenthesis.

1. Atlanta Falcons (2/5)
2. San Diego Chargers (7/3)
3. Baltimore Ravens (1/15)
4. Chicago Bears (11/4)

Moore 'Very Concerned' About Lack Of Reps With Palmer

May 18, 2014 3:04 AM

Denarius Moore hasn't had a lot of time to work with Carson Palmer this summer because of injuries.

Moore has been sidelined since early August with an injured right hamstring.

"I'm very concerned," he said. "As far as getting timing down with the quarterback, that's very important. And actually being out there and repping each play, getting each concept down. It's just mental errors, too, that you have to be aware of."

In his rookie season, Moore had 33 receptions for 618 yards and five touchdowns.

Terrelle Pryor Faces Important Test In Final Preseason Game

May 11, 2014 12:02 PM

Terrelle Pryor struggled in his first two preseason games, but was excellent against the Lions last week.

Pryor had a 59-yard run and a 17-yard touchdown run, but also was 3-of-5 passing for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

Pryor is expected to play extended snaps on Thursday for the Raiders against the Seahawks.

Pryor will be the No. 3 quarterback for the Raiders this season behind Carons Palmer and Matt Leinart. Oakland may use Pryor on certain packages during the regular season.

Bears, Packers, Steelers, Raiders Rated As Having Best Uniforms

Nov 30, 2014 8:24 AM

The Bears have the best uniforms in the NFL, according to Paul Lukas of Uni Watch.

"True, the helmet design is starting to look a tad dated," writes Lukas. "But the striped sleeves, striped socks (now a rarity in the NFL, alas), unique number font, and even the perma-memorial to Papa Bear all score major points, and the Bears may be the only team in the league who look as sharp on the road as they do at home. The cream of the NFL crop."

The Packers, Steelers, Raiders and Eagles round out the top-five.

"Just suit up, baby," writes Lukas about the Raiders. "Silver and black look just as good today as they did when Al Davis came up with them. There's probably some marketer out there who wants the team to dress up like the fans in the Black Hole (and hey, that actually could be fun as a one-off thing), but you don't mess with something this elemental. Also: The Raiders are among the few NFL teams that wisely have declined to adopt the new Nike collar format."

Pryor Earning Praise On Work Ethic, Development

Aug 3, 2014 11:38 PM

Terrelle Pryor has played catch up over the past year after he missed most of training camp and the first five regular season games last season.

Pryor is learning from Carson Palmer the nuances of the quarterback position.

"The suspension really screwed me," Pryor said. "The way I came out of college and my mistakes screwed me. But right now, I'm in a good place because I'm learning from the best and I'm only going to get better, a lot better. If I can just keep on figuring out this progression thing and having my internal clock running with my feet, I can be good. I can be great."

Dennis Allen and Greg Knapp have been complimentary of Pryor's work ethic and skill set.

"Do I think I'm Carson? No," Pryor said. "I want to be that quarterback that can run, too, and be like Carson with his feet. His feet are great. That's what 10 years, 11 years, does for you. If I can get that down from working with him, I can be dangerous."

Palmer has enjoyed working with Pryor.

"We have a really good (quarterback) room, especially with Terrelle in there, another young guy just chomping at the bit for his shot," Palmer said. "There's a lot of competition, but it's a good friendly competition because we're helping each other along the way."

Rod Streater Playing His Way Into Raiders' WR Rotation

Aug 4, 2014 4:13 PM

Rod Streater has been excellent for the Raiders during training camp and in two exhibition games. Streater has 13 catches in two preseason games.

Streater is an undrafted free agent out of Temple.

Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. believes Streater will have a very good rookie season.

“Streater’s pure size, speed and athletic ability are very noticeable right off the bat and he adjusts well to the ball in the air,” Williamson said. “I’m shocked he fell through the cracks. His size could separate him from the other Raiders’ speed receivers, particularly in the red zone.”

Streater is getting first team reps due to injuries to Denarius Moore and Jacoby Ford.

McFadden Won't Be Limited By Raiders Due To Injury Fears

Sep 15, 2014 8:45 AM

Darren McFadden has a history of missing chunks of time because of injury, but first-year Raiders coach Dennis Allen has no plan to go easy on him.

"He's 100 percent," Allen said.

"He's been extremely explosive throughout camp and in the preseason. He's very vital to our offense, giving our offense a chance to be explosive and keep the defenses honest. We're going to have to be able to keep him healthy and use him throughout the year. The thing that you look at as a running back, it's a tough position and they take some shots. That's part of football and we can't baby him, we can't protect him. We have to go out there and play football and give him an opportunity to carry the ball, and we hope that he's able to stay healthy."
