Raiders Scoring Nine Fewer Points Per Game Since Palmer Trade

Jul 13, 2014 1:16 AM

The Oakland Raiders are 5-10 since acquiring Carson Palmer in a trade with the Bengals.

Gary Horton of Scouts Inc. thinks Palmer is a poor fit for the West Coast offense used by new Raiders' coordinator Greg Knapp.

“I just don’t see the fit,” Horton said. “Plus, he makes a lot of bad decisions. It just seems like it was a bad trade from the start.”

The Raiders averaged nine more points and committed a half turnovers less in the 16 games before Palmer's arrival.

Raiders Still Believe In Zone Blocking Run Scheme, Using Power Also

Sep 10, 2014 7:29 AM

Greg Knapp still prefers the zone blocking run scheme as offensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders, but called more one-back power running successfully last Sunday against the Falcons.

“We did some more one-back power and we emphasized, instead of wide zone, we did some tight zone as change ups,” Knapp said Thursday. “But it was still a pretty good mix in (32) rushes. It was a pretty good mix of both.

“Keep in mind too, this is really the first game we’ve really had a chance to keep the run game going throughout the four quarters so it gave us a lot more opportunities to use the whole run game package. That helped keep the defense honest.”

Knapp and Dennis Allen feel the zone blocking scheme is the best in football and is worth the growing pains.

“What you saw on Sunday is we did a better job of having consistent runs with less negative runs,” Knapp said. “It was good to see with both not only Darren (McFadden), but Goody (Mike Goodson) to share the wealth a little in the run game. I was pleased with (Stefen) Wisniewski’s performance and certainly, with him and Willie (Smith), getting more reps in our offense, you’re hoping to get that kind of continuity and that progression and success. That’s worked out well the last couple weeks.”

Raiders Using Falcons' Blueprint To Rebuild

Dec 3, 2014 11:43 PM

The Oakland Raiders play the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, and they largely serve as a team worth examining as how to build a sustainable winner.

"They've got the right formula for winning football games," Dennis Allen said of the Falcons. "They understand their personnel, they understand what they're looking for and what it takes to win. In some respects, that's a team we try to emulate."

Reggie McKenzie was a candidate to become general manager of the Falcons, along with eventualy hire Thomas Dimitroff.

"They play with energy, they play with passion, they enjoy playing the game, they create an up-tempo situation both offensively and defensively," Allen said. "When they play that way, it keeps the crowd into it, keeps the crowd excited. It's a good home-field advantage."

Dimitroff and head coach Mike Smith have a similar relationship as what McKenzie is attempting to create with Allen.

"You've got to be collaborative, and collaboration is more important than communication," Smith told Bay Area reporters by conference call last week. "Communication can be one way, and collaborating is two-way communication. Thomas is forward-thinking, very intelligent and a good talent evaluator, and it's been a great working relationship for us."

Ex-Raiders' Defensive Lineman To Be Tried For Four Murders

Oct 9, 2014 9:04 PM

Anthony Wayne Smith, a defensive lineman who played for eight years in the 1990s for the NFL's Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, will stand trial for four murders.

The killings came in a nine-year span beginning after Smith's career in the NFL concluded.

Smith had already been tried for one of the killings: the 2008 death of Maurilio Ponce, a mechanic found stomped, beaten and shot along a Southern California desert highway in what prosecutors called a business deal gone wrong.

A jury deadlocked 8-4 in April in favor of guilt, and in July while awaiting retrial, Smith was charged with the other murders.

The other murders are a 1999 killing of Kevin and Ricky Nettles, who were kidnapped from a Los Angeles car wash and shot to death, as well as the 2011 killing of Dennis Henderson.

Defense attorney Daniel Evans said prosecutors have cited no credible motive in any of the cases, and said they all lack physical evidence.

"There's no DNA evidence, there's no fingerprints evidence, there's no ballistics evidence that tie him to any of these cases," Evans told The Associated Press in a phone interview Friday night.
