The Oakland Raiders recently filed a grievance aimed at recouping roughly $9.5 million from former quarterback JaMarcus Russell, a source with knowledge of the situation said Thursday.
The NFL Players Association is representing Russell in the matter. The Raiders are attempting to retrieve guaranteed money that was advanced to Russell in 2008.
One source dubbed the potential ruling of the case as "50/50," depending on the interpretation of some language in Russell's contract.
Russell's agent, Eric Metz, is quoted by Yahoo Sports!, which first reported on the grievance, as saying the money in question was fully guaranteed to the quarterback.

Raiders May Have Joint Camp With Cowboys Instead Of 49ers
The Raiders are considering joining the Cowboys for joint training camp practices this summer, according to an Oakland player.
Oakland plays at Dallas on Aug. 12, after the Cowboys break camp in San Antonio and before they move camp to Oxnard. If the teams agree to a joint deal, it could end up being in Dallas itself.
A Raiders official declined comment. The past two years, the Raiders hosted the 49ers in Napa for two days of camp.
Oakland's Offensive Coordinator Prominent In Practices
Oakland's new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson is known for being very loud and vocal.
"He's a very inspiring guy, very fiery out on the field," quarterback Jason Campbell said. "He wants every play full speed, nobody letting up. That's how the games are. There's not a lot of guys standing around or goofing off."
Heyward-Bey Showing Significant Improvement
Raiders wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, who disappointed in his rookie season, has looked good this spring.
Jerry McDonald of the Contra Costa Times writes, "Can't roll my eyes anymore when Tom Cable tells how much Darrius Heyward-Bey has improved. Best practice I've ever seen him have, and there isn't anything else that's even a close second."
McDonald added that Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said "it was the best he'd seen Heyward-Bey play."
Raiders Aren't Interested In Owens
Raiders coach Tom Cable says that the team is not interested in signing free-agent wide receiver Terrell Owens.
With Owens remaining on the market, there were rumors that Oakland might consider the veteran.
"We really haven't had any discussion about that," Cable said on KNBR radio's Murph and Mac Show. "We've got a good, young receiving corps, it's never been a point of conversation."
Raiders Move Bruce Campbell To Guard To Play Immediately
Bruce Campbell played offensive tackle at Maryland, but he has been switched to guard so that he can get more playing time right away, according to coach Tom Cable.
Campbell was the fourth round pick by the Raiders in the 2010 NFL Draft.
OG Loper Signs With Oakland
The Raiders signed veteran guard Daniel Loper on Friday in a move that gives them more depth and experience.
Loper, 28, played in 40 games for the Tennessee Titans from 2006-08 and eight for the Detroit Lions last season. His only five starts as an NFL player came for the Lions.
Robert Gallery and Cooper Carlisle are the projected starters at left and right guard, respectively. Loper will compete for a backup spot during training camp.
Russell Clears Waivers, Becomes Free Agent
Former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell has cleared waivers and become a free agent.
He is now free to sign with any team that may have interest in the former first overall pick.
Russell was cut by Oakland on Thursday.
Oakland Signs Michael Bennett
The Raiders have signed halfback Michael Bennett.
Bennett, who has spent time with the Chargers, Buccaneers, Chiefs and Vikings, received a one-year deal.
He has 3,692 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns during his NFL career.
Raiders Release JaMarcus Russell
The Oakland Raiders released former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell on Thursday, ending a three-year tenure marked by his high salary and unproductive play on the field.
Senior executive John Herrera told The Associated Press about the move and said that "we wish him well."
The decision came less than two weeks after Oakland acquired Jason Campbell from Washington to take over at quarterback and signifies that owner Al Davis finally lost patience with the immensely talented but unproductive player he drafted first overall in 2007 against the wishes of former coach Lane Kiffin.
Ravens, Raiders Never Discussed Asomugha
