NFL Asks 49ers, Raiders To Share Stadium

May 16, 2014 10:27 PM

With both teams failing to find new stadiums in a rough economic climate, the NFL is asking the 49ers and Raiders to discuss joining forces to construct a new shared venue. "The NFL has encouraged us to explore the possibility of a two-team facility to address the economics of building a new stadium," 49ers president Jed York said in an interview this week. "I think it's important you look at all of your options. If that's a possibility, that's certainly something we'll explore."

Raiders' linebackers coach Don Martindale interviewed for the team's defensive coordinator position with team owner Al Davis, team sources said Saturday. Martindale and Davis also discussed the head-coaching position, according to a team source familiar with the interview, but it is not known if Davis is considering Martindale for the position. A Raiders' official declined to say what the interview was for. "We haven't made it anything specific yet," team executive John Herrera said. "Mr. Davis wanted to interview Don, talk to him and just kind of see what the best position would be for him."

Gibril Wilson's Amazing Productivity Against The Run In 2008

Jul 22, 2014 2:38 AM

Gibril Wilson was signed to a lucrative $39 million contract by the Raiders last offseason, and he certainly earned much of his 2008 salary as far as his usage. From Aaron Schatz of FootballOutsiders.com: 'According to our individual defense stats, Gibril Wilson made 87 run plays this season (i.e. tackles or assists). That ranks seventh in the entire league -- D'Qwell Jackson of Cleveland was first with 106 -- but more importantly, the gap between Wilson and the rest of the league's safeties is colossal. Lawyer Milloy and Yeremiah Bell tied for second among safeties with just 58 run plays each. That would rank 45th among all defensive players. Not only that, but Wilson made his average run play after a gain of 4.7 yards, which is two yards closer than the average safety. Maybe Wilson was playing in the box most of the time, but still, these numbers are ridiculous -- and honestly, it isn't like it did much good because Oakland ranked 26th in run defense DVOA. 'I currently have individual defense stats figured back to 1999, and Wilson ends up with more run plays than any safety in the database. The previous record was 86 run plays by Pat Tillman in 2000. Of course, Tillman was making his average play after a gain of 7.7 yards, which is a bit different from Wilson. The other thing to note is that in every other year, there are a few safeties with at least 60 run plays.'

Raiders Blast Report Of Davis Selling Team

Oct 7, 2014 10:29 PM

The Raiders dismissed an ESPN report Sunday that said Al Davis is negotiating to sell part of the team to a group with designs on moving it to Los Angeles. The report was written by ESPN's Chris Mortensen, who Davis called "a professional liar" on Sept. 30. "The report from Chris Mortensen which states that the Raiders, Al Davis and Amy Trask are in negotiations with Dean Metropoulous to sell the team is totally unfounded and false," Raiders senior executive John Herrera said. "Once again, for reasons known only to him, Mortensen has fabricated a story which has no basis in fact."
