Raiders Claim Lenny Walls

May 17, 2014 1:11 AM

A day after being waived by the Broncos, cornerback Lenny Walls was claimed by the Raiders. However, Walls will not be joining the Raiders because he failed his physical. Walls, who is in his fourth NFL season, was placed on injured reserve Nov. 1 with a right groin strain. He appeared in seven games (three starts) for the Broncos this season, finishing with 16 tackles, six pass breakups and one forced fumble.

Sapp Placed On The IR With Shoulder Injury

Sep 21, 2014 1:12 PM

The Oakland Raiders placed defensive tackle Warren Sapp on injured reserve Saturday with a right shoulder injury, prematurely ending his 11th NFL season. Sapp, who turns 33 next month, had been listed as doubtful during the week for Sunday's home game against the Miami Dolphins after injuring his shoulder during the Raiders' 16-13 win at Washington last Sunday. He has a torn rotator cuff, the team said. Sapp wasn't sure when he got hurt in the game. He had an MRI exam Wednesday and coach Norv Turner didn't immediately know the results, though Oakland downgraded Sapp to out on Friday's injury report. "It's not a separation, no," Turner said Friday. "They're just making sure in terms of the structure and everything inside. I think we'll know something in a few days where he's at."

Moss Couldn't See A T.O. Partnership Working

Jun 7, 2014 8:02 AM

Randy Moss, who has not spoken to Bay Area media since Sept. 8, told ESPN he could not envision a scenario in which he and Owens could be on the same Raiders team. "How would T.O. look in silver and black?" Moss was asked. "Am I here or not here?" Moss responded. You're here, Moss was told. "No, I'm not here," Moss said. "I mean, T.O. could be a good fit here with the Raiders. But I don't think with his baggage and everything he's been through, and my baggage and what I've been through, I don't think it would work."

NFL To Return To L.A.

Sep 21, 2014 1:09 PM

The NFL and city officials have reached a preliminary agreement on terms to bring a team back to the Los Angeles Coliseum. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue made the announcement Thursday on the steps of City Hall. But he didn't identify a potential tenant or speculate when Los Angeles might get the team. He also spoke positively about a team playing at a facility proposed for the Angel Stadium parking lot in Anaheim and didn't rule out the Rose Bowl in Pasadena as a possible home field, either. As Tagliabue entered a limousine, he was asked if he could assess the significance of what he had just announced. He replied, ``I'd rather not try.'' The commissioner did say: ``It's the first time we've had agreement on term sheets. We're one step closer, two or three steps closer. Whether it's 2009, 2010, or 2000-whatever, our goal is to have definitive agreements on all subject matters well before our league meetings in March.''

Holmes Doubtful For Raiders Game

Jun 6, 2014 10:32 PM

Running back Priest Holmes hadn't returned from Florida, where he was undergoing tests after suffering a head injury in last week's 28-20 loss in San Diego. Coach Dick Vermeil, who Wednesday told the Bay Area media he expected Holmes to be upgraded to probable, told reporters Friday that Holmes was doubtful and sounded resigned to playing without him. Running back Larry Johnson, who earlier this week was complaining about being Holmes' backup, will get his chance as the No.1 running back.

Green Misses Practice Again

Sep 21, 2014 1:14 PM

Coach Dick Vermeil raised the possibility Thursday that quarterback Trent Green may not start for Kansas City on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders. Green was in St. Louis on Wednesday for funeral services for his father and was expected to return the next day and dive into game preparation. But Vermeil said Green also was absent from a practice on Thursday that was scaled-down, anyway, because of the injuries that have hit both the offense and defense. Vermeil declined to address the question when asked if backup Todd Collins might start. ``I'm not going to say,'' he told reporters at his post-practice news conference.

Moss Questionable For Sunday

Sep 21, 2014 1:15 PM

Randy Moss was held out of practice Thursday for the second straight day, and Oakland's star receiver is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Kansas City. Moss' sore body is still recovering after a hard fall against San Diego on Oct. 16, when he bruised his ribs, strained a groin and bruised his pelvic area. He has played the past two games in a limited role, catching a 22-yard touchdown pass and making three receptions in the Raiders' victory over Buffalo on Oct. 23. He had three more catches for just 26 yards in a 34-25 win at Tennessee last Sunday. Moss will likely be limited again Sunday against the Chiefs. "He didn't do anything today," coach Norv Turner said after practice Thursday. "I thought he'd be better. Rod Martin, the trainer, thinks he's getting better. We just want to get him to the point where he can come out and run and not have a setback." Moss has 25 catches, third most on the team and 10 fewer than leader LaMont Jordan, for 535 yards this season and is averaging 21.4 yards per catch. He has a team-leading three TD receptions.

More WR's Choose Low Numbers With New Rule

Nov 28, 2014 2:55 AM

There was a time not so long ago when a number in the teens predicted an early training camp demise for a wide receiver. If you didn't get one of those choice numbers in the 80s, chances were -- well, your chances weren't very good. That was then and this is now in today's NFL: Randy Moss, once the preeminent No. 84, is sporting No. 18 for the Silver and Black. Plaxico Burress, the erstwhile No. 80 in Pittsburgh, is a stylish No. 17 for the Giants. Even Jerry Rice, the most decorated wide receiver ever -- the ultimate No. 80 -- wore No. 19 in his final days with the Broncos. "The younger generation, they look at those numbers in the teens as being cool," Rice said. "But back in the day, if you had 80, 81, even 88 -- I was No. 88 in college -- you thought it was pretty cool. But you have a new generation now." It is the league's hottest fashion trend. A total of 30 wide receivers had numbers in the teens when the season kicked off. These numbers, for the players who wear them, are prime. In March 2004, the NFL -- faced with escalating retired numbers, an increasing emphasis on passing, and with it, more wideouts and tight ends -- allowed wide receivers to start wearing numbers 11-19, even if numbers in the 80s were available. Rookies and veterans changing teams were permitted to make the switch. The first wave was the trio of rookie wide receivers who went in the top 10 of the college draft the following month. The Cardinals' Larry Fitzgerald, the No. 3 pick overall, Detroit's Roy Williams (No. 7) and Reggie Williams (No. 9) of the Jaguars all wore single digits in college (Fitzgerald and Reggie Williams both wore No. 1) and they all chose No. 11 as their new number in the NFL.
