Jets Name Geno Smith No. 2 QB For Third Preseason Game

Aug 25, 2016 7:58 AM

Geno Smith remains the No. 2 quarterback for the New York Jets heading into the team's third preseason game.

Ryan Fitzpatrick will start against the New York Giants and Smith will be the first quarterback off the bench.

Smith is in competition with Bryce Petty for the reserve role.

"[Petty] played a lot last week and the week before," Bowles said in explaining the decision. "We have to get our guys ready to play."

The Jets are "perfectly willing to consider" keeping four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, general manager Mike Maccagnan said. The fourth is second-round draft pick Christian Hackenberg, a virtual lock to make the team.

Matt Forte Insists He'll Be Ready For Week One

Aug 17, 2016 8:09 AM

Matt Forte injured his hamstring just before the start of training camp, but he insists that he'll be ready for the first game of the regular season.

Forte has largely been on the sidelines with the New York Jets as part of what he calls a "super, super cautious" plan to deal with the injury.

"This is the most patience I've had to have with an injury because I've always looked forward to obviously getting out there as soon as possible," Forte said. "But at this time it's been a process. They've had to hold me back, personally, because if it were up to me I'd be going at it every day to try to be out there on my own terms. But you don't want to do something where -- a lot of times they have to protect me from myself, so I don't overwork or do something where I have a setback."

Forte only worked in individual drills for the third time on Tuesday, but says he'll "definitely" be ready for the team's opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 11 even if he doesn't take any snaps in a preseason game.

Brandon Marshall Willing To 'Stand On The Table' To End Franchise Tags

Aug 10, 2016 11:14 AM

Brandon Marshall tells the New York Daily News that he is prepared to do whatever it takes to get rid of the franchise tag the next time the collective bargaining agreement is up for negotiation.

Alshon Jeffery, a friend of Marshall's, was tagged this year.

"It's one of those things that I'm going to stand on the table for when it's time to get back at the table," Marshall said of the franchise tag. "I think it's bad business. There should never be a time -- whether it's sports or it's business -- where one side has all the risk. We know the risks that come with playing football. So if a guy has no guaranteed money, he holds all the risk. ...

"We're talking about longevity. We're talking about security. [Jeffery] has all the risk. If he injures himself now, that's it. That's not fair. That's not right."

The current CBA runs through 2020.

Marshall and Revis jawed at each other through an intense head-to-head battle.

An incensed Marshall left the offensive sideline and walked about 20 yards to confront Revis, who was stationed at his cornerback position.

Marshall's open-handed slap at Revis didn't connect and the skirmish ended quickly.

Darrelle Revis Open To Moving To Safety In Future

Aug 4, 2016 8:40 PM

Darrelle Revis is open to moving from cornerback to safety at some point in the future.

"He's still an elite corner for us," said Todd Bowles.

"There will probably be conversations in the future about maybe moving my position to safety," Revis said Thursday, per Connor Hughes of NJ.com. "But as of right now, I still feel I can play at a high level, and play the cornerback position at a high level."

Rod Woodson, Charles Woodson and DeAngelo Hall made the move from cornerback to safety.
