Jets Nearly Lost Matt Forte To New England

Nov 27, 2016 3:03 PM

The New York Jets decided to sign Matt Forte on the first day of free agency in 2016 but there were some concerns about the condition of his knee during the physical. The Jets were in no rush to get the paperwork done to finalize the deal with Forte.

Forte became anxious and he decided to fly to Massachusetts to sign instead with the New England Patriots.

When the Jets heard Forte was going to meet with the Patriots, they quickly changed their behavior to sign him. The Jets overlooked the concerns about his knee and officially signed his three-year, $12 million contract.

Forte acknowledged that the Patriots had reached out about potentially signing him.

"My agent told me they called," Forte told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday. "I asked if they talked about anything, and he said they just wanted me to come for a visit. I said I'm already here about to sign, so I didn't feel like that would be right."

Forte has 732 rushing yards with seven touchdowns on 189 carries this season.

Todd Bowles Concerned About Player Revolt If Bryce Petty Named Starter

Nov 17, 2016 4:23 PM

Todd Bowles has refused to name Bryce Petty the starting quarterback of the New York Jets for the remainder of the 2016 season.

Bowles is believed to be concerned about his team checking out on Petty.

Petty has been an inferior quarterback to Ryan Fitzpatrick in practice but the Jets would like to see what they have in him before entering the offseason.

"You'd like to see young players play, but you also want to make sure they're ready for that," Mike Maccagnan said. "It's a more complicated decision than some people realize."

Bears, Jets, Broncos, Cardinals Could Pursue Tony Romo In 2017

Nov 17, 2016 10:48 AM

There are four teams that Tony Romo could end up on next season if his situation with the Dallas Cowboys behind Dak Prescott remains unchanged.

In no particular order, Adam Schefter reports Romo could end up on the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Denver Broncos or Arizona Cardinals.

If Prescott continues to merit playing as the starter, the Cowboys would struggle to carry Romo's $14 million base salary.

Ryan Fitzpatrick Believes He'll Play Sunday

Nov 8, 2016 4:04 PM

Ryan Fitzpatrick believes he'll play against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday despite a sprained MCL in his left knee, according to a league source.

Todd Bowles says that Fitzpatrick must practice in order to play for the New York Jets. Bryce Petty will start if Fitzpatrick isn't able to play.

Fitzpatrick, who has thrown a league-leading 13 interceptions this season, was injured when Dolphins defensive lineman Jordan Phillips rolled into his left knee in Week 9.

Ryan Fitzpatrick Has Sprained MCL In Left Knee

Nov 7, 2016 3:22 PM

Ryan Fitzpatrick, who underwent an MRI on Monday, has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL in his left knee.

Todd Bowles said Fitzpatrick will start next week against the Rams despite his two-interception performance.

But Fitzpatrick's injury, although not considered serious, could impact that decision.

Bryce Petty replaced Fitzpatrick for four snaps on Sunday, completing both pass attempts and finishing off a drive that resulted in a field goal.

Jets Working To Stop Jay Ajayi, Avoid Being 'Footnote In History'

Nov 4, 2016 8:08 AM

Jay Ajayi will attempt to become the first player in NFL history to rush for 200 or more yards in three straight games when the Miami Dolphins face the New York Jets on Sunday.

Sheldon Richardson, who wasn't born the last time the Jets allowed a 200-yard rusher, says that won't happen.

"Decent back," he said of Ajayi. "They found a little groove with him right now. I think we've got a game plan for him. We're not going to be a footnote in history, and that's how we approach it."

The Jets have the No. 1 rush defense in the NFL, allowing just 74 yards per game.

"It's a good challenge for us," David Harris said. "They run the ball good. We stop the run good. We'll see who breaks first."

Brandon Marshall: Byron Maxwell 'Holds Every Single Play'

Nov 3, 2016 8:48 AM

As Brandon Marshall prepares to face off against the Miami Dolphins, he took a shot at cornerback Byron Maxwell.

"I played against him last year and he just held every single play," Marshall said. "Every single play he held. That was tough."

Marshall encountered Maxwell last season when the latter was a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Marshall said he's "excited" for the rematch because, "I owe him one."

Sunday's game between the New York Jets and Dolphins will also be Marshall's first in Miami since the team traded him in 2012.

Jets Release Knile Davis, Agree To Deal With C.J. Spiller

Nov 3, 2016 8:53 AM

The New York Jets claimed Knile Davis on waivers but decided to release him hours later after signing C.J. Spiller.

Spiller will join Matt Forte and Bilal Powell in the Jets' backfield.

Davis was traded by the Chiefs to the Packers on Oct. 18th, played two games for Green Bay and then was released.

The Jets already were in negotiations with Spiller, but they hadn't received a commitment when Davis became available on waivers.
