Geno Smith has begun throwing following his surgery to repair a fractured jaw.

"Get ready for me to come back," Smith told the New York Post on Saturday.

The newspaper caught Smith throwing to a friend at his apartment complex near the Jets' training facility in Florham Park, New Jersey. Smith, his cheeks swollen, wasn't wearing a shirt but was wearing eye black.

"I feel great," he told the Post. "You see me throwing, right?"

Rex Ryan believes Woody Johnson never wanted to fire him as head coach of the New York Jets.

Ryan said the media "wouldn't allow" him to remain with the Jets after John Idzik was fired as general manager.

"We talk like brothers. I know Woody never wanted to fire me," Ryan told HBO's Andrea Kremer, via NFL.com. "I could've been his coach for 20 years, that's what Woody wanted. There's no question Woody wanted that."

Geno Smith has decided to have surgery to repair his broken jaw after getting a second medical opinion.

Smith's jaw was broken Tuesday when former Jets linebacker IK Enemkpali punched the quarterback in a locker room dispute over a $600 debt.

Smith is expected to be sidelined for 6-10 weeks. 

The Buffalo Bills claimed former New York Jets linebacker IK Enemkpali off waivers Wednesday, one day after the Jets released him following a locker-room altercation in which Enemkpali punched quarterback Geno Smith.

Rex Ryan was the Jets' head coach when the team drafted Enemkpali in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL draft.

Ryan was subdued and at times defensive while speaking to reporters Wednesday night shortly after the Bills announced Enemkpali's signing, saying he had yet to speak to Enemkpali.

Jets quarterback Geno Smith will be sidelined at least six to 10 weeks with two fractures in his jaw, the result of a locker-room altercation Tuesday morning with reserve linebacker IK Enemkpali.

"It was nothing to do with football. ... It was very childish," coach Todd Bowles said. "He got cold-cocked ... sucker punched, whatever you want to call it, in the jaw. He's got a broken jaw, a fractured jaw."

The Cardinals have made a one-year offer to running back Chris Johnson, sources told ESPN's Dianna Russini on Tuesday.

Johnson, who became an unrestricted free agent after the Jets declined to exercise their option after the 2014 season, recorded career lows for carries (155), rushing yards (663) and rushing touchdowns (one) last season after signing a two-year, $8 million deal.
