Ranking The NFL's Oldest, Youngest Starters By Team

Oct 31, 2014 2:22 PM

The Atlanta Falcons, San Diego Chargers and Baltimore Ravens have the three oldest collections of starters in the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs, Seattle Seahawks and Cincinnati Bengals are the youngest.

Former Vikings head coach Bud Grant had a popular saying that "for every young guy you start, you lose a game."

Pete Carroll worked for Grant early in his coaching career, but has had one of the youngest teams in the NFL during his tenure with the Seahawks.

"I was of that mindset in classic fashion until I had to be in charge of calling all the shots and then it just flipped in me that we don't know where we're going unless we find these guys out," Carroll said. "One of the really exciting things about playing guys early is ... by the middle and to the end of the season, you’ve developed players that fit into your rotations now that add to your depth and also add to the opportunity to not over-play your older guys."

Below is a full list with the rank in offense/defense in parenthesis.

1. Atlanta Falcons (2/5)
2. San Diego Chargers (7/3)
3. Baltimore Ravens (1/15)
4. Chicago Bears (11/4)
5. Pittsburgh Steelers (25/1)
6. New York Jets (23/2)
7. New York Giants (9/2)
8. Detroit Lions (3/20)
9. New Orleans Saints (6/13)
10. San Francisco 49ers (8/8)
11. Denver Broncos (14/7)

Tebow Declines To Accept Running Back Label

Aug 4, 2014 6:07 AM

Tim Tebow has rushed for 84 yards over three preseason games and is being labeled a running back by several pundits, including ESPN's Merrill Hoge.

"Well, I will take that as a compliment from him," Tebow said. "I'm a quarterback, first and foremost. However else I can help the team, I will help the team. I think some things are just playing football and I think some things are position-specific."

Tebow has completed only 38 percent of his passes in the preseason.

But Tony Sparano is seeing progress in Tebow as a passer.

"When I watch the film, I see something a little different than I think most people (who) watch it see," Sparano said. "That's progress to me."

Panthers Prepared For Preseason Game Like Regular-Season Opener

Oct 31, 2014 9:38 AM

The Panthers are treating Sunday night's preseason game against the Jets like it is their regular-season opener.

Carolina has game-planned for New York and will play their starters into the third quarter.

They've even used simulated crowd noise in practice, a rarity for a preseason game. Ron Rivera has spoken repeatedly to his players about performing on a "big stage" in front of a national television audience.

"I feel as if every stage is big for us this year," Cam Newton said. "We have a point to prove and we have to have that chip on our shoulder each and every game."

Holmes Had Say In Hiring Of Receivers Coach

Sep 25, 2014 6:02 AM

Santonio Holmes has a reputation as somewhat of a troublemaker, but the Jets think enough of him to have asked for his input before they hired Sanjay Lal as their receivers coach.

"It was important to make the right hire," Rex Ryan said. "I wanted them to get a feel for each other."

Holmes said he approved of Lal after meeting him at Ryan's house.

"Sanjay was the right guy to bring in at the time," Holmes said. "When we met at Coach Ryan's house, we saw eye-to-eye with everything that we talked about. He’s a tough-nosed guy, very mechanical, loves to work on technique and doesn't take any B.S. from the receivers."
