April 2011 - New York Jets Wiretap
Cromartie Calls Out Rookie Torrey Smith
Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie returned to practice on Thursday and had a few things to say about rookie Ravens receiver Torrey Smith.
Cromartie suffered bruised ribs and a bruised lung recently.
He will likely cover Smith, who had five catches for 152 yards and three touchdowns last week in his first start, in Sunday's game between the Jets and Ravens.
"He had one big game," Cromartie said dismissively. "That's it. He has five catches for his whole career."
Coordinator Calls Out Jets Defense
Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, still upset over the team's effort against the Raiders last Sunday, called out his unit on Thursday.
"You can handle technique mistakes, and sometimes guys just go against somebody who's better and you come up short, but when it's mental errors or it's a guy being lackadaisical or it's an effort thing ... those are things we consider unacceptable," Pettine said.
"We have our standards of play and, when we don't play up to them from an effort standpoint, that's the most troubling. It's certainly something we talked about Monday when we watched the tape."
Cromartie, Mangold Dress For Practice
Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie has returned to practice, participating in drills and returning punts four days after suffering a bruised lung and ribs.
Cromartie might still be limited in the team portion of practice Thursday, but getting back on the field is a sign that he could be ready to play in New York's game at Baltimore on Sunday night.
Center Nick Mangold was also in uniform for the first time since suffering a high right ankle sprain against Jacksonville two weeks ago.
Jets Re-Sign Aaron Maybin
The Jets have re-signed linebacker Aaron Maybin to their 53-man roster, according to a report.
Maybin was initially signed by New York after he was released by Buffalo this summer.
The former first-round pick made the team's final roster, but was cut after the Jets were awarded players on waivers.
Sanchez Isn't Concerned About Broken Nose
Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez isn't concerned about what his broken nose will mean for either his play on the field or his marketability off it.
Sanchez suffered what the team called a "minor break" in his nose Sunday, but he has already been cleared to practice this week.
"It feels a lot better now, and we'll just worry about it after the season," Sanchez said. "It's no big deal."
Taylor: Henne More Talented Than Sanchez
Jason Taylor, who has played for both the Jets and Dolphins, believes that Miami quarterback Chad Henne is more talented than Mark Sanchez, his New York counterpart.
"I think Chad (Henne) has grown immensely since I left here a year ago," Taylor said. "I saw a kid in New York -- Mark Sanchez -- that is young. I don't think he's as talented as Chad Henne."
The winless Dolphins share the AFC East with the Jets.
Namath Questions Ryan's Preparation Of Jets
Jets legend Joe Namath has questioned Rex Ryan's preparation of the team, but the coach says he isn't going to change his methods.
Ryan jokingly said he might even let Namath, 68, participate in practice and compete to be Mark Sanchez's backup.
"I'm not gonna change who I am because Joe Namath said something," Ryan said. "Joe Namath can come in here, and if he can still throw, we'll have him as a backup quarterback. He doesn't know our team. He's on the outside. Even though he's a Jet, and once you're a Jet you're always a Jet ... but he's on the outside, he's not in these meetings. I think if he was he'd be shocked at the preparation.
"I'm confident with our football team. There's no question about it. And, I've told you this many times, I've never gone into a game that I didn't think I'd win. I haven't won them all, but I certainly think we can and will."
Namath had said he was alarmed by the way the Jets lost to the Raiders on Sunday.
"It wasn't disheartening so to speak," Namath said. "It's rather alarming is the way I'm looking at it.
"It starts at the top. Coach Rex Ryan I think has been doing a great job getting the team to two (AFC) Championship Games. But if there's one thing about the athlete, if you keep telling him how good he is, he's going to start believing it, to the point that he may not be preparing not quite the way he should. He may be losing some respect for the other team."
Cromartie May Have Bruised Lung
Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie suffered an injury to his ribs in the second half of the team's lost to the Raiders on Sunday.
The Jets called it a rib injury, but a league source confirmed reports that Cromartie suffered a bruised lung.
He was in severe pain after the game and didn't talk to reporters.
"We're not sure about it right now," Jets coach Rex Ryan said of Cromartie's injury.
Favre Takes One-Game Job As College Football Analyst
Southern Miss has announced that Brett Favre will serve as the color analyst for the school's Oct. 1 game against Rice.
Before reaching the NFL, Favre played quarterback for the Golden Eagles from 1987-1990 and set several school passing marks in the process.
Favre said in a statement that this move does not mean he's committing himself to a career in the broadcast booth.
"I'm excited to be back at Southern Miss with the Golden Eagles," he said. "I'm not committing to a new career in broadcasting, but just wanted to support Southern Miss and check out the view from the press box. It should be fun and I hope the fans enjoy it."
Cromartie: I'm A Better Playmaker Than Asomugha
Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie believes he's a better playmaker than more-heralded defender Nnamdi Asomugha.
New York went after Asomugha, but settled for re-signing Cromartie after the former decided to sign with the Eagles.
Cromartie flirted with the Raiders, Asomugha's old team.
"My style of play and his style of play are totally different," Cromartie said. "I feel I'm more of a playmaker than he is."
