If the Patriots decide to release linebacker Adalius Thomas, as expected, the Jets will likely court him. New York coach Rex Ryan coached Thomas to a pair of Pro Bowl appearances in Baltimore.

The Jets will release running back Thomas Jones this week, according to sources. Jones, who will become a free agent March 5, was slated to receive a $3 million roster bonus March 9 and a $2.8 million base salary in 2010.

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum hinted on Friday that Thomas Jones may not have a future with the team. "We are getting closer to a decision there, but nothing has been finalized yet," Tannenbaum said. "All I can say is we were fortunate we traded for him three years ago." Releasing Jones before the start of free agency on Friday would likely based more on money than his production.

Thomas Jones, who turns 32 in August, is due to earn a $3 million roster bonus next month plus a $2.8 million base salary in 2010. The Jets want him to renegotiate his contract or they'll likely release him. The club and Jones' agent, Drew Rosenhaus, have had discussions and the two sides are expected to talk this week at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. The Jets, who led the NFL in rushing (172.3 yards per game), feel Jones is expendable because of their offensive line, which has started 35 consecutive games together, the emergence of rookie Shonn Greene and the return of Leon Washington, who suffered a compound fracture of his right leg last season. Plus, Jones, perhaps slowed by a knee injury, faded in the playoffs last season, rushing for just 117 yards and a touchdown on 45 carries (2.6-yard average).

Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha started a lot of controversy when he suggested that he wanted to play alongside Darrelle Revis in New York earlier this offseason. He later clarified that he was just joking, but the thought has lingered. NFL Insider Adam Schefter is reporting that the Raiders are looking to swing a trade this offseason, and Asomugha is among those that the team is open to trading.

The Jets have signed kicker Nick Folk to a one-year deal. Jay Feely is set to become an unrestricted free agent. Folk worked out for both the Jets and Giants.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez says that his knee surgery went well. He had surgery on his left knee Wednesday at Morristown Memorial Hospital. "Out of surgery. Doc says it went exceptionally well. Thx to Dr Montgomery. Thx to family, friends & tweeps for the love and well wishes," Sanchez posted on his Twitter page.

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is scheduled to undergo left knee surgery on Wednesday. The procedure will repair the patella ligament in his knee. He should be completely healthy by the start of training camp in July and the surgery should fortify the knee for the future.

The Jets will tender offers to wide receiver Brad Smith and safety Eric Smith, according to general manager Mike Tannenbaum. Both players had career years in 2009 and played vital roles on special teams. Each is in their fourth season and are restricted free agents as a result of there being no new collective bargaining agreement.

The Jets have hired Mark Carrier as their defensive line coach. New York hired the former Pro Bowler, who has been Baltimore's secondary coach the last four seasons.
