Jets G Kendall Feels Betrayed By Mangini

Dec 16, 2014 7:42 PM

Jets guard Pete Kendall wants a pay raise and is not afraid of burning bridges to get it. Kendall is seeking at least a $1 million salary increase to a minimum of $2.7 million for the 2007 season and reiterated his desire to be released by the Jets if a new deal is not reached. His growing frustration results from his belief that he's being treated unfairly by an organization he's sacrificed for in the past and a head coach, Eric Mangini, who he feels betrayed him.

Kendall Blasts Jets For 'Smear Campaign'

Oct 31, 2014 4:40 AM

Ten days ago, Jets guard Pete Kendall went public with his unhappiness over his contract situation, demanding to be released or traded. His feelings haven't subsided. If anything, he's madder than ever. Beyond the money issues, Kendall is steamed by what he perceives as a "good cop, bad cop" smear campaign being waged by the Jets, and he vented those opinions yesterday in a phone interview with the Daily News. He also addressed speculation that, as the Jets' union rep, he blew the whistle on coach Eric Mangini for running minicamp practices last weekend that may have violated league rules on offseason contact. The NFL Players' Association reportedly is looking into whether the Jets broke any rules.

Pennington Looks Sharp During Minicamp

Oct 31, 2014 4:40 AM

During Jets' minicamp, Chad Pennington has made every kind of throw -- and looked quite sharp with all of them. "Chad's been on-target," top receiver Laveranues Coles said. "The primary focus has been getting his body more flexible and stronger," Mangini said. "All the things you usually do in a typical offseason, Chad was not able to do because of the rehab. Whenever you have to split time, it's not quite the same. Now he's been able to really focus on that and he has done a great job." Feeling confident in his arm has led to a spiraling confidence in the offense. Day by day, Pennington is getting a better feel for the nuances of it. In fact, he and Coles hooked up on a long pass during the morning practice that was semi-improvisational. "It's within the system," Pennington said. "It's a designed play. It did not happen exactly like on the chalkboard when it's drawn up. When they kind of breakdown or don't seem to go right, as quarterbacks and receivers, you have to be on the same page and if you are, the ball gets to the right spot."

Kendall Asks Jets To Trade Him

Oct 31, 2014 4:40 AM

Pete Kendall was down on one knee on the sideline away from the rest of his teammates, his left hand cupping his chin as he stared out at the field. The New York Jets' first-team offense ran through drills while the veteran offensive lineman barely appeared to be a part of the team. If Kendall gets his wish, he won't be for much longer. Kendall has asked the Jets to trade or release him because of a bitter contract dispute, and his frustration and anger were clear as he spoke to the media for more than 20 minutes after the morning practice at veteran minicamp. "My situation's just become a circus," Kendall said. "I'm very unhappy."

Jets' Vilma Compares Dogfighting To Horse Racing

Oct 31, 2014 2:16 PM

Jonathan Vilma's comments yesterday about dogfighting weren't as dismissive as the recent remarks by the Redskins' Clinton Portis, a friend and former college teammate, but the Jets linebacker suffered a foot-in-mouth moment when he compared dogfighting to horse racing. In an interview with WFAN's Chris Russo, Vilma expressed indifference toward dogfighting, an illegal blood sport that has made headlines because of the Michael Vick controversy. When asked if he has a problem with dogfighting, Vilma replied, "To be honest with you, I never looked at it one way or another. What people do is ...of course dog fighting is much more extreme, but you can equate it to horse racing. You have animal activists that (condemn) horse racing. They feel horses are being tested brutally, whatever the situation is. I'm not an animal activist. To each his own." Vilma, who appeared on the show to promote his youth football camp next month on Long Island, said "everyone (in the NFL) has heard about dogfighting. Whether you choose to participate or not, that's your decision. I'm not here to condone it or accept it. It's been there for awhile....Virginia says it's a felony. Hey, it's a felony. There's nothing to argue there. It is what it is."

Patriots Would Only Trade Asante To Jets For Two 1st Rounders

Sep 25, 2014 10:00 PM

The Patriots will not allow holdout, franchised corner Asante Samuel to bolt to the Jets - unless New York is willing to part with two first-round draft choices. Of course, it will also take hell freezing over before Eric Mangini gives Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli two first-rounders. So there is no practical way for Samuel to end up with the Jets, just as there was no prayer of Deion Branch going to New York last year. So any conversations the Jets have with Samuel are done with only the intention of poisoning the waters in New England.

Martin Gives Jets More Cap Room

Sep 5, 2014 10:52 AM

In what figures to be one of his final moves with the New York Jets before his anticipated retirement, tailback Curtis Martin has re-worked his contract for a second straight year, and provided the team more salary cap room. According to league salary documents, Martin, who missed the entire 2006 season with a knee injury, reduced his 2007 base salary from $3.25 million to $820,000 which is the NFL minimum for a player of his seniority. He also voided the 2008 and 2009 seasons of the eight-year contract extension that he signed in August 2002.

Jets' Mangini Makes Cameo On "The Sopranos"

Jun 12, 2014 12:59 PM

Eric Mangini had a surprise sit-down with Tony Soprano. The Jets coach made a cameo on HBO's "The Sopranos" on Sunday night -- and was lucky to not get caught up in all the bloodshed on the violent mob drama. "I think `star' would be a little bit too strong a word," Mangini said Monday with a chuckle. "It was just nice to be a part of a show that I've followed for so long. I've liked the show since it started and to have the opportunity to be part of it, especially here at the end, it was just a great opportunity."

Can Wadsworth Make A Comeback With The Jets?

Sep 4, 2014 5:44 PM

Nearly seven years have passed since Andre Wadsworth last appeared in the NFL, and six since he was told he would never play again. Yet there he was on the Jets' sideline, helmet in hand, awaiting his next set of plays. After 13 knee operations, Wadsworth is healthy enough to compete for an outside linebacker position with the Jets. "I love football," Wadsworth, 32, said after a voluntary team workout. "Why do people think it's crazy to do this? I know in life you can be a businessman or whatever you want to do after football. You can do it until you die. But in football, you can't do it until you die."
