Jets' Pennington Wins The Starting QB Job; Martin Stays On PUP

Nov 5, 2014 10:50 AM

Jets quarterback Chad Pennington won the starting job Tuesday, but he will be missing a key member of the offense when the regular season starts. Running back Curtis Martin will start the year on the physically-unable-to-perform list with a lingering knee injury after missing all of training camp. Coach Eric Mangini made both announcements, which seemed to be foregone conclusions.

Mangini Still Undecided At QB

Nov 5, 2014 10:50 AM

Some expected Eric Mangini would finally choose between Chad Pennington, Patrick Ramsey, Brooks Bollinger and rookie Kellen Clemens on Aug. 27, but those who did were disappointed. "All four of those guys need to be ready to play Friday," Mangini said, referring to the preseason finale against Philadelphia. "That's the way we're going to approach the week with all the players. They need to be ready to play for as long as we decide to keep them in the game." Asked if he might not announce a starter even in the days before the Sept. 10 opener at the Tennessee Titans, Mangini said, "It would depend on whether someone has distinguished himself by the time we get to Tennessee."

Jets Coach Reprimands Barlow

Nov 4, 2014 7:51 AM

Kevan Barlow was supposed to be sleeping on Tuesday. Instead, he was comparing his former coach to one of the most despised men in history, and his new coach isn't too happy about it. Barlow, the running back the Jets picked up in a trade with the 49ers over the weekend, compared San Francisco coach Mike Nolan to Adolf Hitler in an interview that appeared in the Contra Costa Times Wednesday. The interview was conducted on Tuesday, when Barlow was given permission by Eric Mangini to catch up on his sleep instead of attending practice. But the damage was done. Mangini - who doesn't even like his players to talk to the media about teammates, even in a complimentary way - reprimanded Barlow Wednesday morning. "I thought that his comments were inappropriate," Mangini said. "He said that after he said it, he wished he could have his words back, but he can't."

Barlow Apologizes For Comparing Coach Nolan To Hitler

Sep 19, 2014 2:18 AM

Jets running back Kevan Barlow apologized to 49ers coach Mike Nolan for comparing him to Adolf Hitler in a newspaper interview. Barlow, who was traded from San Francisco to New York on Sunday for a fourth-round pick, made his inflammatory comments to the Contra Costa Times. The often outspoken Barlow said after practice Wednesday he left a detailed message for Nolan. "If I could take it back, I would," Barlow said. "I was very emotional. All I knew at the time was San Francisco, that was where I started my career, that's where my house was. It was a shock to me. "I'm a passionate player, I'm an emotional guy when it comes to on the field and off the field. Sometimes it gets the best of us. I put it behind me, and I'm glad to be a Jet."

Jets Restructure Martin's Contract

Sep 19, 2014 2:24 AM

The New York Jets renegotiated Curtis Martin's contract last week to cover themselves in the event Martin does not play this season, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday. Martin, who was scheduled to earn $2.5 million in base salary for 2006, signed a "split" contract that reduced his salary to a veteran-minimum $810,000, the newspaper reported. If he's placed on season-ending injured reserve, he will receive $475,000. The move, along with the Jets' trade for San Francisco 49ers runing back Kevan Barlow, is being seen as a sign the team is preparing for a season without Martin.

Barlow Dealt To New York

Nov 5, 2014 10:55 AM

The New York Jets acquired running back Kevan Barlow from the San Francisco 49ers for an undisclosed draft pick in 2007, their second attempt in a week to shore up the position. The deal is contingent on Barlow passing a physical. On Aug. 14, the Jets traded for Browns running back Lee Suggs, hoping to get help with Curtis Martin out. But Suggs failed his physical and the deal was voided. The Jets are in desperate need of help at running back. Martin has been on the physically-unable-to-perform list since training camp opened with a lingering knee injury.

Jets Interested In Duckett And Barlow

Two big names on the Jets' short list of running backs are the Falcons' T.J. Duckett and the 49ers' Kevan Barlow, both more accomplished than Lee Suggs. They're "very interested" in Duckett, a source said.

Titans Want Second-Round Pick For Chris Brown

Oct 15, 2014 5:10 PM

With Lee Suggs failing a physical, running back options for the Jets are limited. The Titans appear unwilling to deal Chris Brown for anything less than a second-round pick, and the Redskins are unlikely to yield Ladell Betts after the shoulder injury to Clinton Portis. "It's fair to assume that there could be a lot of moves," Mangini said. "The moves are going to be predicated on the opportunities, and the opportunities are going to be based on whether that move can improve the team."
