Heimerdinger Leaves The Jets

Jun 8, 2014 12:38 PM

The New York Jets parted ways with offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger on Wednesday. Last week, new coach Eric Mangini informed Heimerdinger the team would retain him to run the offense. Heimerdinger was upset with the decision because he was interviewed and passed over for the head coaching job, making for an awkward situation. Plus, he came in under former coach Herman Edwards last year. When asked last week whether he was happy with the decision, Heimerdinger said, "I don't have a choice." It later became clear he was trying to get out of his contract, in which he had two years left at over $2 million. It is unclear what type of financial agreement was made to let Heimerdinger out of his deal. Heimerdinger's agent, Bob LaMonte, was traveling and unavailable for comment. Heimerdinger didn't return a message seeking comment. "I have great respect for Mike Heimerdinger as a football coach," Mangini said in a statement. "Ultimately, we agreed that the best course of action would be for the Jets to go in a different direction."

Heimerdinger On His Way Out Of New York?

Oct 31, 2014 10:30 PM

Mike Heimerdinger, say the Jets, is still their offensive coordinator. But for how long? The dust has to settle after offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak bolted the Broncos to become the Houston Texans' head coach. But the word from Denver is that Heimerdinger remains on the Broncos' radar screen because the Jets still may let him out of a contract that has two years and $2.3 million left on it. If Heimerdinger forgoes that guaranteed money and waives the offset clause in his contract, he might be able to rejoin college roommate Mike Shanahan.

Mangini The Choice For The Jets

Oct 31, 2014 10:30 PM

On the eighth day of their search for a new head coach, the Jets decided late this afternoon to offer the job to Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, a person with knowledge of the situation told Newsday. The team is expected to finalize details on a contract that is likely to make Mangini its next coach as early as Tuesday. Barring any contractual hang-ups, Mangini, who would become the youngest head coach in the NFL at 34, is likely to accept the job. "It looks like he will," said the person, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity. "It's about as likely as anything could be." The situation remains fluid and unfinished, the person cautioned, especially since the Jets finished interviewing their final candidate, former Vikings coach Mike Tice, at 4 p.m. this afternoon. "There's still things that would have to happen and details that would have to be worked on," the person said. "But my perception is that by tomorrow morning, the Jets will have a new coach." Their choice is Mangini, the Hartford, Conn., native who has spent 10 of his 11 years as an NFL assistant with Patriots coach Bill Belichick, including the 2005 season as his defensive coordinator. "It appears as if the job will be his and the club was in the process of putting an offer on the table today," the person said.

Mangini Interviews With Jets On Sunday

Oct 31, 2014 11:37 AM

The New York Jets interviewed Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini on Sunday night for their vacant head coaching job. Mangini appears to be the favorite to fill the Jets' coaching vacancy created by Herm Edwards' departure to Kansas City. General manager Terry Bradway and assistant GM Mike Tannenbaum met with Mangini in the Foxborough, Mass., area. The two then returned to New York to prepare for their interview with former Vikings coach Mike Tice on Monday. The Jets are expected to move quickly after interviewing Tice. They are trying to replace coach Herman Edwards, who left for Kansas City. Mangini, who turns 35 this week, appears to be the top name on the Jets' list. But his inexperience and age could be a factor. There are several things working in his favor, including his ties to Tannenbaum and the Jets. He was an assistant with the team from 1997-99.

Mangini Very Interested In Jets

Oct 5, 2014 7:02 AM

If the Jets want Eric Mangini as their next head coach, the feeling is very mutual, The Post learned exclusively last night. Although Bill Belichick has been trying to talk Mangini out of taking the Jets job, Mangini will make his own decision, and that decision would be to accept a fair Jets' offer if one is, indeed, made. The Jets' heavy-breathing interest in the Patriots' defensive coordinator and Belichick disciple is one of the worst-kept secrets in the NFL. The Jets are scheduled to interview Mangini tomorrow near Foxborough, Mass., and he's believed to be at the top of the team's wish list. The level of Mangini's interest in the Jets has been a question of significance that's been raised in recent days.

Defensive Coordinator Mangini To Interview With Jets

Aug 1, 2014 8:37 AM

The New York Jets couldn't get Bill Belichick to put down roots for more than a day when they named him to succeed Bill Parcells as head coach after the 1999 season. Six years later, the Jets are reaching out to the Belichick coaching tree as they seek to replace Herman Edwards and begin the climb back to respectability. Jets general manager Terry Bradway confirmed that he will interview New England defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, the latest "hot" Belichick prot?g?, sometime this week. According to NFL guidelines, because the Pats remain in the playoffs, the interview must take place in the Boston area, and New England officials have to agree on the day and time. Mangini, 34, was never more than an NFL position coach until this season, when he was promoted to coordinator to replace Romeo Crennel, who departed to become head coach of the Cleveland Browns. The lack of experience in a supervisory position, and the fact Mangini has been in the NFL only 11 seasons, may be superseded by his connection to Belichick. The NFL's reigning head coach guru, Belichick is a man whose imprimatur carries considerable weight in New York, despite his abrupt resignation from the Jets in 1999 after only one day on the job. There are also strong ties between Mangini and Jets assistant general manager Mike Tannenbaum, with the two having worked together in Cleveland in the mid-1990s. Mangini is being characterized in some quarters as the front-runner for the job. While such an assessment might be premature, there is little doubt having Belichick's name on his resume as a reference won't hurt him in New York.

Vitt First To Schedule Interview With Jets

Oct 31, 2014 10:49 PM

Joe Vitt, who served as the St. Louis Rams' interim head coach while Mike Martz was sidelined by a bacterial infection to his heart, will interview early next week for the New York Jets' vacancy created by the Friday departure of Herm Edwards. Jets general manager Terry Bradway said in a press release Friday that he would begin interviewing potential successors to Edwards "immediately," and apparently wasted little time in contacting Vitt, who posted a 4-7 record as the St. Louis interim coach. Beyond the interim job, Vitt, who is expected to meet with the Jets on Monday, has never been a head coach at any level.
