Jets And Giants Agree To New Meadowlands Stadium

Oct 18, 2014 10:12 PM

The New York Giants and Jets agreed Thursday to build a stadium in the Meadowlands that would become the first NFL venue to be owned and operated by two teams. The facility will be built near state-owned Giants Stadium, which is currently home to both teams and is among the league's oldest stadiums. Specific details about the stadium plan are to be developed over the next several months, including its new name. The teams plan to put the naming rights up for bid. Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey announced the deal during a press conference at the stadium, saying it would guarantee both teams remain in New Jersey for the next 99 years. Codey, appearing with the owners of both teams, said the Jets would also relocate their practice facility to New Jersey. The Jets now practice at Hofstra University on Long Island. The project would create "tens of thousands of new jobs," Codey said, adding he was also looking forward to revenue from income taxes from the Jets' payroll.

Pennington May Be Okay

Sep 12, 2014 9:10 PM

New York Jets' quarterback Chad Pennington may not have a torn rotator cuff, as originally diagnosed by team physicians during an MRI exam on Monday. This latest information gives the Jets a newfound hope that Pennington?s career may not be in jeopardy and that he might even be able to return this season. "I think the best thing [the Jets] can do," said one source, "is sit Chad and not let him back on the field until every party to this is convinced that his shoulder is 100 percent recovered. One-hundred percent recovered and one-hundred percent agreement that he is recovered. That should be the minimum standard now. Until then, he [rehabilitates] and he sits. That's how it ought to be."

Testaverde Signs With The Jets

Nov 24, 2014 10:55 AM

Just one day after apprising Vinny Testaverde in a telephone call that they would likely go in a different direction as they scramble to address a quarterback situation suddenly in crisis mode, the New York Jets on Tuesday reversed field and signed the veteran passer, who will begin practicing with the team this week. The addition of Testaverde, 41, comes as the Jets are resigned to losing starter Chad Pennington for the balance of the season. Team officials will await the results of a second examination of Pennington's damaged right shoulder, expected to be performed Tuesday by Dr. James Andrews, but coach Herman Edwards announced at a Tuesday press conference that Pennington's season was likely over. "It's tough, I anticipate he will be out for the season," Edwards said. "I've never been in the situation where you lose the No. 1 and 2 quarterbacks in a span of seven plays." Jay Fiedler, Pennington's backup, also injured his shoulder Sunday. "I don't anticipate either of them being back this year," Edwards said.

Pennington?s Season In Peril

Nov 22, 2014 12:37 PM

New York Jets? quarterback Chad Pennington has been diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff and if the diagnosis is seconded, he will miss the remainder of the Jet?s season. Pennington worked hard to come back for the 2005 season after an injury plagued 2004. "It's tough to deal with, knowing what Chad went through last year, and just fighting to get back to where he could play again this year," Jets center Kevin Mawae said in an ESPN Radio interview Monday night. "I just spoke with him a little while ago and he's a little down in the dumps right now. From the friend standpoint, you have to feel bad for the guy, from a team standpoint we just have to move on with the guy that comes in there. Brooks Bollinger is going to do a great job and maybe he'll provide the spark for us that we need on offense."

Jets Expected To Start Bollinger On Sunday

Sep 12, 2014 3:55 PM

Third-string quarterback Brooks Bollinger is expected to start for the New York Jets against Baltimore after both starter Chad Pennington and backup Jay Fiedler injured their shoulders Sunday. Pennington and Fiedler were scheduled to undergo MRI exams Monday, but coach Herman Edwards said the results wouldn't be known until Tuesday. "I'll know more probably (Tuesday) on the status of both guys," Edwards said. "At this point, I'm preparing Brooks Bollinger to be our starting quarterback." Pennington, who had offseason surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, was sacked on consecutive plays during the Jets' first series of the second half of their 26-20 overtime loss to Jacksonville

Martin Will Play On Sunday

Oct 18, 2014 10:11 PM

Curtis Martin will be in uniform and on the field for the New York Jets on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Just a day after the MRI on his right knee came up negative, running back Curtis Martin announced he would be back in action. "My main thought is all pain is temporary," Martin said. "It can't last forever. You can get through it for three hours in a game and then you can suffer and cry and everything afterward. That's the attitude I try to take. I often try to focus so hard on something else that it takes my attention away from the pain."

Martin?s MRI Comes Up Negative

Sep 15, 2014 1:51 AM

New York Jets? running back Curtis Martin could be ready to go this Sunday after an MRI taken on his injured right knee came back negative, meaning there are no ligament tears. Martin will likely be listed as questionable and will be "day-to-day" in terms of practice, which he won't today. It'll likely be a game-time decision whether he plays Sunday. "He's been a workhorse," Jets? coach Herman Edwards said. "He's been a guy that's always answered the bell. We'll just see where he's at."

Martin's Strained Right Knee Could Keep Him Out Against Jags

Jun 9, 2014 11:55 PM

Coach Herman Edwards said Monday that Martin was undergoing an MRI and would wait for the results before determining whether the running back can play. Martin, who led the NFL in rushing last season, was injured in the first quarter but stayed in the game and finished with 72 yards on 31 carries in the Jets' 17-7 victory. "We don't know where he's at," Edwards said. "He's been a guy that's always answered the bell. We'll see where he's at."

Coles Reveals Abuse He Received During Childhood

Jul 23, 2014 6:19 PM

Laveranues Coles held a dark secret that caused him nightmares for many years, one he never told any of his New York Jets teammates. The Pro Bowl wide receiver thought he was alone in his inner struggles, and too proud to let any outsiders into his personal prison. But Coles recently decided to free himself of his secret: He was sexually abused as a young boy by his stepfather. "I haven't talked about it in ... forever, but I know that holding something like that inside has been a burden for so long," Coles said after helping the Jets beat Miami 17-7. "For me to get on this platform that I have, having been in the league and have all the media attention that we have, I think it's something that should be said. "If it gets one kid to come out and say, 'Look, this is happening to me,' ... I think it's right." In a story first reported by The New York Times, Coles acknowledged he was molested from ages 10-13 while growing up in Jacksonville, Fla., by the man his mother later married. He was only in sixth grade when the incidents started, but Coles kept it to himself. When a fight in school two years later prompted the police to question his violent behavior, Coles came out with the revelation. "It still bothers you," Coles said. "I mean, there's certain things that you really don't want to deal with, you don't want to remember. But I had my peace with it. It's something that's not happening anymore. I used to wake up in the middle of the night and think about it, but now I'm fine." According to the Times, Coles' stepfather, whose name the receiver didn't want to reveal, was sentenced to nine years in a Florida prison in 1992 after pleading guilty to the infractions. He served 3? years, but was later convicted of another crime and has been in prison since 2001.

Giants Close To Deal For A New Stadium

Oct 18, 2014 10:10 PM

In spite of what the New York Jets are saying about a new stadium to be run jointly by both New York teams, the Giants seem to think they are close to a deal to build an 80,000-seat stadium and adjacent practice facility that would cost $800 million and be paid for by both teams. On Thursday, the Jets appeared to have a different view of the status of negotiations. "I think at this point we are far apart," spokeswoman Marissa Shorenstein said. The new stadium, if built, would open for the 2009 football season. "We're very close to concluding a deal" with the Giants, Robert G. Sommer, a spokesman for the Xanadu developers, said Thursday evening.
