The New York Giants have lost three straight games, but Pat Shurmur has no plans to bench Daniel Jones.
"No," Shurmur said when asked Monday if he would consider making a switch at quarterback. "I think Daniel is going to learn from everything that's going on. Just like all the other rookies and their playing, they're going to learn from the things that happen. But you have to learn and you have to win games, and I'm well aware of that. I'm totally well aware of that."
Through six games (five starts), Jones has turned the ball over 13 times, with seven interceptions and six fumbles.
He had eight total touchdowns (six passing) this year and has thrown for 1,144 yards at a 61.1 completion percentage with a 75.0 QB rating.
"Certainly, ball security is primary, especially for the quarterback. He got it swatted out of his hand on a screen. He was trying to hold off, Saquon [Barkley] popped a little bit late. But generally speaking, yeah, he has to secure the ball better," Shurmur said. "I think as you study quarterbacks, they all have issues at times. But it's certainly something that we've got to get fixed."
Pat Shurmur was asked if the New York Giants are considering making a quarterback change following a disappointing performance in Week 7 by Daniel Jones.
Jones replaced Eli Manning earlier in the season and the Giants won two in a row, but have now lost three in a row.
“No. I think Daniel’s going to learn from everything that’s going on,” Shurmur said, “Just like all the other rookies that are playing are going to learn from the things that happen. But you have to learn and you have to win games. I’m well aware of that. Totally well aware of that.”
The New York Giants are unlikely to have Saquon Barkley on Thursday night against the New England Patriots, according to sources.
Barkley suffered a high ankle sprain on Sept. 22 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He is expected to practice on Tuesday but isn't likely to be medically cleared.
Sitting Barkley gives him another 10 days to rehab until the Giants face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7.
Sterling Sheppard is back in the concussion protocol after displaying symptoms Monday morning.
Sheppard also suffered a concussion in Week 1, which means his absence this time could be extended.
Sheppard has caught 25 balls for 267 yards and one touchdown this season.
Saquon Barkley was running and cutting on the practice field during the New York Giants' practice on Wednesday just 10 days after suffering a high ankle sprain in Week 3.
Pat Shurmur wouldn't rule out Barkley for Week 5, though it is unlikely he plays.
"I don't know yet. I don't know yet," Shurmur said when asked about Barkley's status for Week 5.
Barkley is hoping to play in Week 6 against the New England Patriots on Thursday night. The original timetable for Barkley's return was four to eight weeks.
