John Mara Regrets How Giants Handled Eli Manning Benching

Nov 30, 2017 1:42 PM

John Mara admitted he regrets the way the New York Giants handled the benching of Eli Manning.

Manning refused an option to start Sunday's game against Oakland before likely sitting in the second half for Geno Smith.

"Maybe the timing of it could have been a little different. I wish I could've been here when that was all going down," said co-owner John Mara, who was attending owners' meetings in New York when the decision was made on Tuesday. "What I did not expect -- and this was my fault; maybe I was naïve. I did not expect Eli to react by saying to go ahead and start the other guys.

"I understand, especially after speaking with him [Wednesday]. I completely understand, but that took me by surprise a bit and maybe I would've handled that a little differently."

Manning has had an inconsistent career though he's won two Super Bowls. The Giants currently have a 2-9 record.

Philip Rivers Calls Benching Of Eli Manning 'Pathetic'

Dec 1, 2017 6:00 PM

Philip Rivers didn't pull any punches when asked about the benching of fellow 2004 draft-class member Eli Manning.

"I honestly thought it was pathetic," Rivers said . "He's been out there 210 straight games -- with no telling how many bumps and bruises and injuries -- for his team. He won two Super Bowl MVPs. And with the respect he's had in the locker room over the years, and really the respect he's gained throughout the league, you feel like the guy has earned the opportunity -- if they are in fact deciding to go another direction -- he's earned the opportunity to finish it off these last five weeks."

The Chargers made a draft-day trade that sent Manning to New York in return for Rivers and three other draft picks.

Giants To Start Geno Smith Over Eli Manning In Week 13

Nov 28, 2017 6:28 PM

The New York Giants will start Geno Smith in Sunday's game, marking the first time in more than 13 years that Eli Manning won't start.

Davis Webb will also play at some point before the end of the season.

“Geno will start this week,” Ben McAdoo said. “Over the last five games, we will take a look at Geno, and we will also give Davis an opportunity.”

Manning had started 210 straight regular season games.

The Giants will be the last NFL team to start an African-American quarterback.

Giants' Owners Release Statement Supporting Ben McAdoo

Nov 13, 2017 3:58 PM

The New York Giants' ownership has released a statement in support of Ben McAdoo.

The Giants now have a 1-8 record after losing to the previously winless San Francisco 49ers.

"Ben McAdoo is our head coach and has our support," wrote John Mara and Steve Tisch. "We are in the midst of an extremely disappointing season. Our performance this year, particularly the past two weeks, is inexcusable and frustrating. While we appreciate that our fans are unhappy with what has occurred, nobody is more upset than we are.

“Our plan is to do what we have always done, which is to not offer a running commentary on the season. It is our responsibility to determine the reasons for our poor performance and at the end of the year, we will evaluate the 2017 season in its entirety and make a determination on how we move forward.”

Giants Won't Make In-Season Coaching Change

Nov 9, 2017 6:38 PM

The New York Giants won't make any in-season coaching or front office changes.

The future of Ben McAdoo is in jeopardy as the Giants have began the season 1-7.

ESPN's Josina Anderson reported this week that multiple players believe McAdoo has lost the team.

McAdoo didn't take offense and didn't directly address the issue with his team on Thursday.

"I don't take things personal in this business," McAdoo said.

McAdoo is in his second season as head coach after replacing Tom Coughlin.

Unnamed Giants' Player: Ben McAdoo Has Lost This Team

Nov 8, 2017 4:16 PM

The New York Giants are 1-7 this season and several players have said that the team is quitting on Ben McAdoo.

“McAdoo has lost this team," said one unnamed player on the Giants. "He’s got going 80 percent on Saturdays before we get on a plane to play a game, it’s wild. Changed our off day. He’s dishing out fines like crazy. Suspended two of our stars when we need them most. Throws us under the bus all the time. He’s ran us into the ground and people wonder why we’ve been getting got.”

The Giants reached the playoffs last season.

Ownership Wants Giants To Look Closely At Top College QBs

Nov 8, 2017 9:18 AM

New York Giants owner John Mara put out word to the franchise a few weeks ago to start looking closely at top college quarterbacks such as Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen, according to a report.

Marc Ross, New York's vice president of player evaluation, went to UCLA recently to personally take a look at Rosen.

If the season ended now, the Giants would hold the third pick in next spring's NFL Draft.

There has been a lot of talk recently about whether Davis Webb will take any snaps away from Eli Manning over the remainder of the season.

Giants Could Bench Eli Manning

Nov 6, 2017 7:15 PM

The New York Giants dropped to 1-7 on Sunday, which has forced them to look more towards the future than they expected.

Ben McAdoo hasn't ruled out the possibility of benching Eli Manning in favor of rookie Davis Webb.

Manning has started 207 consecutive regular-season games for the Giants.

He has started every game since midway through his rookie season in 2004. He's one shy of tying his brother, Peyton, for second on the all-time list.

"Well, they've got to do what they've got to do," Manning said. "I want to be out there, I want to keep playing with my teammates and keep working."

The Giants drafted Webb in the third round earlier this year.

Giants Suspend Janoris Jenkins Indefinitely

Nov 1, 2017 8:27 AM

The New York Giants have suspended Janoris Jenkins indefinitely after the cornerback failed to return from the bye week on time.

Jenkins will miss Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams and possibly more.

"As a member of this team, there are standards and we have responsibilities and obligations," Ben McAdoo said in a statement. "When we don't fulfill those obligations, there are consequences. As I have said before, we do not like to handle our team discipline publicly. There are times when it is unavoidable, and this is one of those times."
