Goodell: NFL Has Made 'Tremendous Progress' On Domestic Violence

Oct 27, 2016 10:47 AM

Roger Goodell believes the NFL is moving in the right direction on handling issues of domestic violence despite significant public criticism on the Josh Brown case.

“What you see here is a policy that’s evolved,” Goodell told Gary Myers of the New York Daily News. “We’ve learned a lot, but these are complex matters. When you talk to the domestic violence experts, these are difficult matters to deal with. You have rights, you have families that you have to be concerned with, privacy issues. Yes, you want to make sure you’re doing everything possible to address these [alleged incidents] when they happen, but you also want to deal with them to prevent them from happening. I think we’ve made tremendous progress. Can we make more and will we make more? Of course.”

Goodell said Brown’s one-game suspension at the start of the season was solely for one incident that the NFL had information about.

“Here’s the issue, the discipline that occurred on the one game was for the event on May of 2015,” Goodell said. “That was the only one that we were able to get of all the different things that we’ve heard. The decision was made by our team after we had the evidence to be able to support the one game. We knew we would get challenged [by the NFL Players Association] and we were able to uphold it.”

Giants Release Josh Brown

Oct 27, 2016 8:03 AM

The New York Giants have released Josh Brown.

The team said that it was "misguided" in its previous attitude toward Brown, who acknowledged he was physically, verbally and emotionally abusive against his wife Molly Brown.

"We believed we did the right thing at every juncture in our relationship with Josh," team president John Mara said in a statement. "Our beliefs, our judgments and our decisions were misguided. We accept that responsibility.

"We hope that Josh will continue to dedicate himself to rehabilitation and to becoming a better person and father. We will continue to support him in his efforts to continue counseling, and we hope that Josh and his family can find peace and a positive resolution."

Brown had released a statement earlier Tuesday, apologizing and saying he has "taken measures to get help" for his alleged domestic abuse and wants to be a "voice of change, not a statistic."

Oct 22, 2016 9:49 PM

NFL owners, executives, coaches and players have privately been expressing their displeasure over how the New York Giants have handled the domestic violence allegations against Josh Brown.

One team owner has called the situation an "embarrassment," sources said, as more information into Brown's alleged abuse becomes public.

The NFL initially suspended Brown for the 2016 season opener in response to a domestic violence case from May 2015.

Brown has since been placed on the commissioner's exempt list.

Josh Brown Placed On Exempt List

Oct 22, 2016 10:00 PM

Josh Brown has been placed on the Reserve/Commissioner Exempt List.

The NFL is reopening their investigation on Brown for repeated domestic violence issues. Brown was previously suspended for just one game.

Brown will still collect his $1.15 million salary and has the option to appeal the decision.

The New York Giants have supported Brown, receiving widespread criticism.

"We did some of our own investigation," Giants co-owner and president John Mara said on Thursday. "Most of the investigation was done by the NFL. They made the determination to suspend him for one game. Obviously, the law enforcement made the decision not to prosecute him, so based on the information we had at the time, as I said at the time, we were comfortable with our decision. Obviously, there's been some new information that has come to light over the last day. We don't have all of that information yet but based on what we did have, we felt the best course of action was to make Josh inactive for this game and we'll see what the future brings."

Ben McAdoo Continues Support For Josh Brown

Oct 21, 2016 11:03 AM

Before the start of the regular season, Ben McAdoo said he would "be disappointed" if one of his New York Giants' players chose to not stand for the national anthem.

"The way we operate for the national anthem, we consider it a small gesture to those that served and sacrificed their lives for our country and for us to play and coach in this great game," said McAdoo. "Part of that is the freedom of speech and we certainly respect that, and we talk to our guys about keeping empathy in mind when they do lead and use this league as a platform.

"But I'd be disappointed if one of our guys chose not to stand. It's their choice. It's not mandatory. But we feel it's important."

McAdoo took a more supportive stance when it came to Josh Brown, who has admitted to abusing his ex-wife.

"We're not going to turn our back on Josh," McAdoo said. "He's our teammate."

Earlier in the summer, McAdoo said he expressed his support as a man, father and player.

Giants Could Use Beckham As Emergency Kicker As Brown Stays Home

Oct 20, 2016 7:57 PM

Josh Brown will not travel with the New York Giants to London for their Week 7 game against the Rams.

The Giants said they will review newly released documents in which Brown admitted to domestic abuse and "revisit" the issue when the team returns from London. The NFL also announced that it will review the documents.

In an interview with WFAN Radio in New York, Giants co-owner John Mara said the "best course" was to make Brown inactive this week and that the team hasn't made a decision on his future.

Mara said Brown "admitted to us he'd abused his wife in the past. What's a little unclear is the extent of that."

Ben McAdoo told WFAN that the Giants will "kick the tires" on players and sign one to kick in Sunday's game. Asked if any player on the team was an emergency kicker, McAdoo mentioned Odell Beckham Jr., but later said he doesn't expect to use his star wide receiver "in that role."

The NFL had only previously suspended Brown for one game.

The Giants re-signed him to a two-year, $4 million deal this offseason. Mara said in August the Giants were comfortable re-signing Brown after reviewing all the information at their disposal.

McAdoo also said in August that he supported Brown "as a man, a father and a player."

There has been strong public outcry from fans and even certain players for the Giants to release Brown.

Josh Brown Admits To Physically, Emotionally Abusing Ex-Wife

Oct 20, 2016 8:26 PM

Josh Brown admitted to physically and emotionally abusing his wife and called himself a sex-addicted "deviant" who viewed himself as "God" and his wife as "my slave", according to entries in his own journals, emails to his former wife, and a letter he wrote to friends, which were obtained by SNY.

Brown was arrested in May 2015 and charged with a fourth-degree domestic violence assault.

Brown famously described the incident as "just a moment," even after police documents showed that his wife had accused him of "more than 20" instances of domestic violence.

"I have physically, mentally, emotionally and verbally been a repulsive man," Brown wrote in one of his journal entries. Just below that he circled the words "I have abused my wife."

Brown said his issues with his behavior towards women date back to when he was "molested as a young boy (around 6)".

"I have been a liar for most of my life," he wrote. "I made selfish decisions to use and abuse women starting at the age of 7 to fill this void. I objectified women and never really worried about the pain and hurt I caused them. My ability to connect emotionally to other people was zero. My empathy levels were zero.

"Because I never handled these underlying issues I became an abuser and hurt Molly physically, emotionally and verbally. I viewed myself as God basically and she was my slave."

Eli Manning 'Can Get Real Sick Of' Odell Beckham When Not Producing

Oct 19, 2016 6:45 AM

Eli Manning admits that he can get frustrated with Odell Beckham, Jr. when the wide receiver isn't producing on the field.

"I think with the win you can ignore it a little bit easier," Manning said of Beckham's antics. "Kind of let the coach handle — obviously we got to be careful about getting penalties late in the game and putting our defense in a bind right there."

Beckham had eight receptions for 222 yards in Sunday's win over the Baltimore Ravens. After catching the game-winning, 66-yard touchdown pass, Beckham pulled off his helmet and was hit with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty.

"He made plays and so it's one of those deals where you can get real sick of it if he's not going out there and making plays," Manning said, "but when he goes out and has a couple of huge catches and 200 yards and a game-winning touchdown, you still want him to be smarter, but you accept it a little easier."

Giants To Punish Odell Beckham If He Has Another Outburst

Oct 7, 2016 8:26 AM

Odell Beckham Jr. will be benched by Ben McAdoo if he has another meltdown in Week 5 against the Green Bay Packers.

Depending on the severity should he have issues, Beckham could be suspended for at least one game and possibly two.

The Giants hope they can reach Beckham and correct his issues before punishing him.

The Giants were hands off with Beckham during his run-in last season with Josh Norman. The team likes his passion as an ingredient for why he's such a special receiver but they don't want it to detract from his production.

Tom Coughlin Offers To Work With Odell Beckham

Oct 6, 2016 8:53 AM

Tom Coughlin says he's ready to work with Odell Beckham, Jr. if given the chance to.

Beckham is frustrated with the increased amount of attention on his behavior during games and said he is "not having fun anymore" playing football.

"For his own good [he needs to learn to channel his passion]," Coughlin, who coached the New York Giants from 2004 through 2015. "And I would love to try to help him in this regard because I think so highly of him. ... He is a distraction. If you watch a game, the camera is on him the whole time."

Beckham had a career-low 23 receiving yards on Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.

Coughlin, who remains under contract with the Giants through this season, says he can help.

"He really believes that he is at his best at the top of his passion," Coughlin said. "He is so talented. I don't think there's anything the kid can't do. He is a good kid. He is a team guy in the team room. It's just when he gets on the field, there's only one way he knows how to play."
