Tyler Sash Posthumously Diagnosed With CTE

Jan 26, 2016 7:38 PM

Tyler Sash had chronic traumatic encephalopathy before he passed away in September of an accidental overdose.

Sash was cut by the New York Giants in 2013 after suffering at least his fifth concussion.

Sash had returned to Iowa and increasingly displayed irregular behavior, family members said this week.

Sash had bouts of confusion, memory loss and minor fits of temper.

Barnetta Sash, Tyler’s mother, blamed much of her son’s behavior on the powerful prescription drugs he was taking for a football-related shoulder injury that needed surgery.

Doctors grade C.T.E. on a severity scale from 0 to 4; Sash was at stage 2.

Junior Seau was found to have a similar amount of CTE in his brain after he committed suicide in 2012 at the age of 43.

“My son knew something was wrong but he couldn’t express it,” Barnetta Sash said Monday night. “He was such a good person, and it’s sad that he struggled so with this – not knowing where to go with it.”

She continued: “Now it makes sense. The part of the brain that controls impulses, decision-making and reasoning was damaged badly.”

Tom Coughlin Leaves Door Open On Coaching Again

Jan 5, 2016 11:16 PM

Tom Coughlin and the New York Giants parted ways after 12 seasons but he says he may not be done with coaching.

"Not necessarily," Coughlin said when asked if his passion for coaching has been extinguished.

Coughlin was asked specifically if he would coach next year if the right opportunity came along despite being 69 years old.

"I didn't say that, I just said I'm not necessarily done with coaching," he said. "Thank you very much for asking."

The Giants know that Coughlin is still an extremely valuable scout with loads of institutional knowledge, and would potentially like him to come back in an advisory role on the personnel side.

"When (co-owner Steve Tisch) and I talked to him yesterday, I asked him if he would consider staying on in some capacity," Giants co-owner John Mara said. "I don't want to let all that knowledge walk out the door. I asked him to think about it over the next few days, ways that he might be able to help us going forward.

"He agreed to do that and I don't think either one of us have an idea yet exactly what form that might take. But let's face it, he brings a unique perspective. He knows our team as well as anybody, he knows the league as well as anybody, and there may be some capacity in which he could help. This is not a situation where we wanted to see him walk out the door. We want him to stay involved because of everything he's brought to this organization and everything he could still possibly do at some point in the future."
