Giants coach Tom Coughlin isn't going to hand defensive end Osi Umenyiora a starting job next season.
The two-time Pro Bowler wants to be a starter in New York.
Coughlin said he has talked with Umenyiora since the season ended, but he was also a little disappointed the disgruntled veteran said he wanted to either be traded or retire if he does not start next season.
"He's going to come in and work hard to establish that position," the coach said. "He's a big part of our team, he certainly is a gifted, gifted football player."
Regardless, Coughlin is not going to guarantee Umenyiora a starting job.
"I don't know how you do that," Coughlin said. "Our field is a field and competition is good; just like we tell to everybody, 'Go earn it.' "

Giants Hire Gilbride Jr. As Quality Coach
The Giants have added the son of offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride to their coaching staff.
Kevin Gilbride Jr. will be New York's new offensive quality control coach. He replaces Sean Ryan, who was elevated to receivers coach last week.
Gilbride spent the previous three seasons as the wide receivers coach at Temple.
Cofield Expects Remain With Giants
Giants defensive tackle Barry Cofield expects to remain with the team for next season.
Cofield, like many free agents around the league, will see his status change based on the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
If a new agreement isn't reached, he'll become a restricted free agent. Otherwise, he'll be unrestricted.
Cofield said there has been "a little talk" between the Giants and his agent, in which the team "pretty much made it clear" he would be tendered in an uncapped year.
Plaxico's House In Foreclosure
Plaxico Burress had been living in a $4 million home in Lighthouse Point when he was incarcerated. This house is now in foreclosure.
According to the South Florida Business Journal, Burress and his wife were served with a $3.3 million foreclosure suit on January 22 from Deutsche Bank National Trust Company.
Giants Release Antonio Pierce
Antonio Pierce has been released by the Giants.
"I was shocked at first, but I'm not the one up there up in the office, and they said they felt they needed to go in another direction," Pierce told ESPN's Rachel Nichols on Thursday. "They said it wasn't my health, or the way I played, but just that -- that they were going in another direction. We left everything smooth and peaceful and I'm happy about that -- I felt like I said everything I needed to say to them. I've loved my time in New York and won't have anything but good feelings about being with this team."
Pierce said the reason he was in the New York area was to have a doctor look at the herniated disc in his neck that caused him to miss the final seven games of last season. He said the MRI was "very positive."
"I can't say I'm 100 percent yet, but with the season still six months away, I'm right where I need to be and I'm going to be fine," he said.
Eli: Peyton Did All He Could
Giants quarterback Eli Manning told ESPN Radio's Michael Kay that it was hard to watch brother Peyton's Colts lose in the Super Bowl.
"I was rooting so hard for my brother," the younger Manning said. "I've obviously been there in the Super Bowl (two seasons ago against the Patriots), and you prepare all season and it's so hard to get to that situation, so hard to get there. I just felt for him.
"I got to speak to him after the game a little bit, and I talked to him today. He's doing good. I just told him he did everything he could, and without him on that team, they wouldn't be anywhere near what they've done or capable of doing."
Eli agreed with Kay that the Colts would be a 6-10 team without Peyton, who has been criticized after the 31-17 loss.
"No question," Eli said. "I think he makes every player on that team better. ... I think he's earned the respect of every coach, player, announcer, anybody who is a fan of football."
Support Growing For New York Super Bowl In 2014
Commissioner Roger Goodell clearly supports awarding Super Bowl XLVIII to the Giants' and Jets' new stadium in 2014, and Patriots owner Robert Kraft will lobby other owners for it, but Steelers owner Dan Rooney has a big problem with playing the most important game of the year in potentially cold and nasty weather.
The vote comes May 24-26 in Dallas.
There is really just one concern for a Super Bowl on Broadway: The weather, obviously.
"I hope it's there, I hope it snows and I hope the Patriots are in the game," Kraft, one the NFL's most influential owners, said Friday. "I think there is some real support for it. I know I personally will lobby anyone I can."
Strahan Believes Osi Talk Is 'Stupid'
Michael Strahan says that former teammate Osi Umenyiora's threats of retirement if he doesn't start for the Giants are "stupid."
"What do I think he wants? He wants to play, he wants to start," Strahan told The New Post.
"He's frustrated. Sometimes you ask a guy a question, he says what's on his mind. But they got a better shot of me coming back and me having my best year ever than of Osi quitting football."
Strahan said he spoke to Umenyiora recently and told him to "stop saying stupid stuff."
Burress: 'I Will Play Again'
In an interview with CBS set to air on Sunday, Plaxico Burress vows to return to the NFL.
In addition, the imprisoned wide receiver said he apologized to the Giants for tarnishing the organization.
"I will play again," Burress said in the interview with his former Steelers coach, Bill Cowher, scheduled to air on "NFL Today."
