Coughlin Uses Lakers To Motivate Giants

Oct 13, 2014 1:15 AM

Giants coach Tom Coughlin is using the Lakers' recent NBA title win to motivate his players. Los Angeles bounced back to win the championship after losing to Boston last June. The Giants lost to the rival Eagles in the postseason while trying to defend their Super Bowl title. "This year, what I am saying is that, 'Stop and think about the bitterness of the January situation,' and then realize that as in, for example, the Laker team, you can focus on that as a primary motivational position to take," Coughlin said. "And let that be something that you train for over the summer, the idea of getting to and surpassing the circumstance that we were in a year ago."

Players: Burress Deserves Another Chance

Oct 9, 2014 3:36 PM

A number of Plaxico Burress' former teammates believe that the wide receiver deserves another chance in the NFL. "He's paid the price," defensive end Osi Umenyiora told the Daily News. "He missed I don't know how many games last year, he's given back a lot of money. It would be just overkill right now to suspend him. That's what I think anyway. The commissioner is the commissioner. He has the right to do whatever he feels like doing and what's best for the league. My opinion, as a player, given the circumstances as to what exactly happened, he put other people in danger, he hurt nobody but himself." "I would love for Plaxico to have the opportunity to play this year," Justin Tuck said. "Is that my decision? No." "I just hope the best for Plaxico," said Eli Manning. "The guy helped us win a championship. I hope that he can turn his life around and get back on the right page. He was a pal of mine and a great locker mate and a great player for us. But things just occurred and now we move on."

Hasselbeck: Plax Is A Disaster

Sep 9, 2014 11:04 PM

Former Giants quarterback Tim Hasselbeck called Plaxico Burress "a disaster" on ESPN's NFL Live on Tuesday. "When you're looking at Plaxico Burress, there's no doubt that he can be a dominant receiver at times on Sundays," Hasselbeck said. "We've seen it. But with that being said, I played with the guy. I was in the locker room with him for two years. He's a disaster as a teammate. He's a disaster as a guy that you have to coach. "And what do I mean by that? If you want to wait for a guy to show up to meetings, if you want to have to beg a guy to run full-speed in practice, if you want a guy that would disappear in games because he doesn't get the ball early -- then look, Plaxico Burress is your guy. "But if you don't want those distractions, and you don't want to deal with the other headaches that come along with Plaxico Burress, then you better stay away from him."

Brandon Jacobs Gets Into Boxing Business

Jul 29, 2014 6:40 PM

Brandon Jacobs, who was an amateur boxer as a youth in Louisiana and still spars regularly, has decided to put his money where his interests lie and become a boxing manager. "I've been wanting to get into the business after I was done playing," Jacobs said. "If I didn't fight, I wanted to get into the promotion business, but I hear from people that's a lot of headaches. So I wanted to do something that was more personable with the fighters." Jacobs is a long-time friend of Kendall Holt, the former IBF junior welterweight champion from Paterson, N.J. After his manager was arrested for allegedly dealing drugs, Holt was without a handler and asked Jacobs to fill in.

Umenyiora: I Still Feel Like I'm One Of The Best

Jun 17, 2014 2:30 AM

Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who missed all of last season, still thinks he is among the league's best. Umenyiora said that his body feels great after suffering a major knee injury last year. "I still feel like I'm one of the best, if not the best defensive end in football right now," he said. "I feel quick. I feel explosive. I don't feel like I should be stopped one-on-one."

Ware Ready To Contribute To Giants Running Game

Sep 9, 2014 11:04 PM

With Derrick Ward gone, Danny Ware should get some carries out of the Giants' backfield this season. ?I?m learning the offense all the way now,? he said. ?It?s clicking and it?s allowing me to play better. I?m ready.? Ware said he?s been working one-on-one with running backs coach Jerald Ingram and working on catching passes with Eli Manning. He said having those somewhat private sessions makes it easier to improve. It?s obviously a lot easier to book that time with the coach and quarterback when a 1,000-yard running back has left the team in free agency and Ware could be one of the players asked to fill his lost production. ?As soon as I got in here for the offseason, I got in the books, started meeting with Coach Ingram and everything just started clicking,? Ware said. ?I just took time. I knew I couldn?t get on the field if I didn?t know everything that was going on. I took it upon myself to come in and meet with coach and go out there and catch balls with Eli, and everything?s been good ever since.?

Things Different For Eli Without Plax, Toomer

May 10, 2014 2:14 AM

Giants quarterback Eli Manning has a depleted group of wide receivers with both Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer gone. "No Plax, no Toomer -- it feels different without those guys," Manning told ESPN.com, "but I like this group. It's a competitive group. It's a group that works hard. Nobody's getting any special treatment. Nobody has an ego. It's a group that cares about everybody else. It's a good group." New York currently has Steve Smith occupying the No. 1 spot, with Domenik Hixon the second option. "It's not exactly like starting over, but we are trying right now to get on the same page," said Manning. "I'm trying to learn their body language. I'm trying to talk to them on the field and in the huddle and in the meetings, trying to develop chemistry. You don't want any bad habits to develop."
