Drew Brees is planning on returning to action in the New Orleans Saints' Week 8 game against the Arizona Cardinals.
"That's the plan," said Brees. "We'll see."
Brees had thumb surgery five weeks ago on this throwing hand.
Brees said the decision will come down to "just making sure I can be me."
Drew Brees plans to practice this week and hopes he can return as early as this coming Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
"We'll see how it goes. I'd love to [play]. It's a goal," Brees said.
When asked if he considers it a realistic goal, the quarterback said, "I hope so."
The New Orleans Saints have won five straight with Teddy Bridgewater under center.
Brees has been sidelined since he suffered a thumb injury on his right throwing hand in Week 2. He had surgery Sept. 18 to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
Alvin Kamara has been ruled out of the New Orleans Saints' Week 7 game at the Chicago Bears with knee and ankle injuries.
Kamara has rushed 86 times this season for 373 yards and one touchdown to go with 33 receptions for 276 yards receiving and another touchdown.
New Orleans Saints cornerback P.J. Williams has been suspended for the next two weeks for violating the NFL's policy and program on substances of abuse.
Williams was initially charged with driving while intoxicated in January. However, the case was resolved in August when he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
The 26-year-old has played more than 80% of the Saints' snaps this year.
