Patriots Explode In 2nd Half, Beat Bills 52-28 (+24.1 TC, +13 TRC)

May 17, 2014 11:40 PM

The New England Patriots scored 45 points in the second half in their 52-28 victory at the Buffalo Bills.

The Patriots had a +24.1 advantage in The Trench Counter, averaging 9.3 yards per pass, 6.2 yards per rush and 14 more first downs than the Bills. New England had a +13 edge in Total Rushes/Completions.

Tom Brady went 22-for-36 for 340 yards and three touchdowns. Both Wes Welker and Rob Gronkowski eclipsed the 100-yard mark receiving.

But the explosion of the Patriots' running game may be the game's biggest takeaway. Stevan Ridley rushed 22 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns, while Brandon Bolden rushed 16 times for 137 yards and one touchdown, an average of 8.6 yards.

Rob Gronkowski Likely To Play Despite Hip Injury

Jun 17, 2014 2:06 PM

Rob Gronkowski had “limited participation” in Friday's practice and could miss Sunday's game against the Bills with his hip injury.

“I’m always going with what the game plan gives me,” Gronkowski said. “You never know what kind of situations you’re going to be in during the game, how the game is going to work out. Whatever the assignment is, whatever I’m asked to do, if it’s going out and catching the ball, if it’s staying in and blocking, if it’s run blocking, whatever it is, whatever I’m asked to do, just got to go out and perform it to my best ability that play.”

But ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Gronkowski is likely to play.

Explaining Why Gronkowski's Production Has Decreased

Sep 9, 2014 8:09 PM

Rob Gronkowski's season averages are down across the board so far in 2012, with nearly one less reception and 30 fewer yards per game.

"It’s a team game," Gronkowski told reporters this week. "Whatever plays are called, just going out there and doing my job. Whatever is asked of me, I’m just going to go out there and perform my routes based on how I’ve been coached that week."

Gronkowski has had fewer opportunities, as Aaron Hernandez has been sidelined and the Patriots' pass protection has been inconsistent. Gronkowski has been asked to assist more in pass protection to give Tom Brady more time to throw.

Also, Brady has been struggling with his downfield accuracy and that has led opposing defenses to focus more on the short and intermediate routes.

Devin McCourty Likely To Remain At CB Due To Lack Of Patriots' Depth

Aug 21, 2014 1:09 PM

Devin McCourty has been a weak spot in the New England Patriots' secondary.

McCourty was switched from cornerback to safety toward the end of last season, which gave way to a marked improvement though he is back at corner now.

But McCourty continues to make mistakes with too much frequency. McCourty dropped two potential interceptions in the Patriots' 31-30 loss to the Ravens.

The Patriots, however, don't have quality depth at cornerback behind McCourty as continues to be one of the top corners with Kyle Arrington.

“I always want to perform well. No matter if I had a great game or a bad game,” McCourty said. “Each week is a new week. My teammates depend on me, and I count on myself to try to go out there and play well each week.”

Brady Almost Always Sees Things Same Way As Belichick, McDaniels

Oct 5, 2014 12:17 PM

Tom Brady was asked what happens if he disagrees with Bill Belichick or offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

“I wouldn’t say (it happens) very often that we have a disagreement," said Brady. "I think we always kind of see things the same way. I offer my input, but at the end of the day I’m a player, I’m not a coach. So, I listen to what they want to do, and that’s what I go out and try to do.’’

Torrey Smith, Ravens Beat Patriots 31-30 (-1.4 TC, -8 TRC)

Oct 29, 2014 4:42 PM

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the New England Patriots 31-30 in a rematch of last season's AFC Championship Game.

The Ravens had a -1.4 deficit in The Trench Counter, despite averaging 2.6 more yards per play due to their turnover and racking up 135 yards lost to penalties. The Patriots had a +8 advantage in Total Rushes/Completions.

Joe Flacco had an excellent game, going 28-for-39 for 382 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

But the story was Torrey Smith catching six balls for 127 yards and two touchdowns just hours after his brother died in a motorcycle accident.

Ray Rice was the lynchpin of the Ravens' offense, rushing 20 times for 101 yards to go with five catches for 49 yards.

Tom Brady went 28-for-41 for one touchdown, connecting with Wes Welker eight times for 142 yards and Brandon Lloyd nine times for 108 yards in the first full game without Aaron Hernandez. Rob Gronkowski was limited to just two catches for 21 yards.

The Patriots relied heavily on the running game, as Steven Ridley and Danny Woodhead combined for 28 carries and 71 yards.
