Patriots Take Cannon After Cancer Diagnosis

Sep 12, 2014 3:32 PM

The Patriots have chosen offensive lineman Marcus Cannon out of TCU in the fifth round of the NFL draft. Cannon learned last week that he has a treatable form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, according to a report, but that didn't deter the Patriots. New England chose the 358-pound Cannon with the 10th pick of the fifth round which they obtained on Friday in a trade with Houston.

Brady Breaks Labor Silence

Sep 12, 2014 3:36 PM

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady joined the labor dispute because he wants to be part of the solution. "We're trying to bring reason and compromise to a very challenging agreement," Brady said Friday. "This is nothing that's easy. There's a lot that goes into it." The reigning league MVP has remained silent on the issue, despite being the face of the lockout, which had been temporarily lifted by Judge Susan Nelson this week. "Look, I've been very fortunate as a player to sign the contracts that I've signed, to be in the position that I'm in as a leader," said Brady, the NFL's highest-paid player. "When the opportunity was presented to me, and Peyton (Manning) and Drew Brees (joined) — we represent the entire group. We're all trying to be part of the solution, not the problem. I know a lot of people are hard at work."

Brady 'Cool' With Ryan's 'Hating'

Sep 17, 2014 3:14 PM

Tom Brady said on Friday morning that he's "cool" with Jets coach Rex Ryan's assertion that the Patriots QB is the most hated man in the country, according to an ESPN.com report. Responding to Brady's quote that he "hates" the Jets, Ryan writes "I really don't know Tom Brady, but who wouldn't hate him? Look at his life. Actually, look at his wife. Every man in America hates Tom Brady, and he should be proud of that." On Friday, Brady laughed when asked about Ryan and the Jets, jokingly referring to Gang Green as his "favorite subject." He then addressed Ryan's comments. "As long as he hates me, I'm cool. He's the leader of that team and the players take after their coach," Brady said.

Welker Enjoying Freedom Of Lockout

May 10, 2014 4:08 PM

Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker isn't too concerned about the NFL lockout at this point. He's making the most of his down time, including doing some charity work with children in Oklahoma City. Welker tossed a few passes to the participants, threw in a few tips during receiving drills and lined up on defense during the 3 1/2 -hour camp at Douglass High School. "You've got to get into it a little bit," Welker said. "I get bored easily. So, for me, I've got to get active and D one of these kids up or catch a pass for 'em, throw to 'em or whatever. "We have fun with it." The season won't start for five months and the lockout has restricted team activity. "It's awesome because I'm on my own schedule," Welker said. "I don't have to talk to anybody; I don't have to see anybody. You see some of the same faces all the time. It's kind of nice not to have to look at them anymore and see them. I'm kind of enjoying it. "I like being able to train on my own and be able to do some of my things. It's good to be with the team, but it's kind of nice."

Belichick: 'You Need To Know The Whole Board'

Nov 6, 2014 9:53 PM

The Patriots and coach Bill Belichick will enter their war room next week aware of how the entire draft board looks, not just around where they will pick. "You need to know the whole board," Belichick said. "That's part of what has helped us in making trades and maneuvering on draft day, understanding what we think is the value on the board as it relates to us, and our perception of what it is in the league. It’s just doing your homework."

"We've definitely been contacted by teams below us offering to move back and by teams behind us looking to move up into a better position." The Patriots select 17th and 28th in the first round, and they hold the first pick of the draft's second day at No. 33. The team has two choices in each of the first, second and third rounds.

Scott: Patriots 'Want To Be' Jets

Oct 15, 2014 11:43 PM

Jets linebacker Bart Scott continues to add fuel to the feud between New York and New England. Scott believes the Patriots are trying to become more like the Jets, who have made headlines in recent seasons with their confident comments. Wes Welker broke tradition by taking subtle shots at Jets coach Rex Ryan during the 2010 playoffs. "That's doesn't sound right, that kind of talk (coming from the Patriots)," Scott said recently. "That's when you know they're buying into us, when they start sounding like we talk. Wes Welker start trying to be us, sounding like we do. That's how you know they want to be us."
