Ex-Lineman Tucker: Pats Abused IR Rules
Former offensive-lineman Ross Tucker said on Thursday that he believes the New England Patriots used players on their injured reserve in practices, according to ESPN.com.
Such a move would be in violation of the NFL's rules pertaining to the use of the injured reserve.
Former team video assistant Matt Walsh made similar statements when meeting with Commissioner Roger Goodell last week.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said Thursday, "The Walsh allegation is still under review."
"Basically, the Patriots would put a player on IR, knowing it meant he couldn't play in a game or practice with the team for the remainder of the season. By skirting the rules and practicing him anyway, it allowed them to develop his skills during the year. A side benefit is that they were also able to give some of the older players less repetitions and, therefore, additional rest," Tucker said.
Brady Buying Audi SUVs For Offensive Line
Tom Brady announced Friday at a charity appearance that he is providing his offensive linemen with Audi Q7 SUV's.
Brady had a record-breaking season and was the NFL's MVP.
Meeting With Walsh Yields No New Information
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell met with Matt Walsh for three hours on Tuesday and said no new information had come to light as a result and indicated that the Spygate scandal had run its course.
In an early-afternoon news conference, Goodell stopped short of saying Spygate was a closed matter, but appeared to indicate that the issue had hit a dead end.
"I don't know where else I would turn," Goodell told reporters, adding he did not know of anyone else who had additional information, "but I reserve the right to review new information if it comes up."
"The fundamental information that Matt provided was consistent with what we disciplined the Patriots for last fall," Goodell said.
Patriots Looking To Add Veteran Running Back
The New England Patriots are looking to add veteran depth at running back as they met with former Lions runner Kevin Jones last week, according to The NFL Network.
Jones is still a couple months away from recovering from a torn ACL, but seemed far enough along for the Pats to evaluate what he could bring to the team.
New England currently has Kevin Faulk, Laurence Maroney, Kyle Eckel, Heath Evans and Sammy Morris on the roster.
Source: Pats Taped Offensive Signals
A league source confirmed on Friday that the New England Patriots taped the offensive signals of the Miami Dolphins during a game back in 2001, according to The South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
ESPN.com reported on Friday that the new set of tapes submitted to the NFL by former video assistant Matt Walsh contained offensive signals, with all of the previous evidence having been footage of opposing defenses.
It is not known as this point whether the NFL will punish the Patriots for their latest revealed transgression.
NFL Obtains Videos Of More Patriots Taping
The NFL obtained eight more video tapes from former Patriots video assistant Matt Walsh recently, according to The Washington Post.
The videos include taped signals from six games between the 2000 and 2002 seasons, including an AFC Title game against the Steelers.
However, the materials did not include footage of a St. Louis walkthrough prior to the Super Bowl in 2002.
"There's no Rams walk-through tape," Greg Aiello, the NFL's senior vice president of public relations, said. "They're all coaching signals, consistent with what we already knew."
Pats Sign NT Fifita
The Patriots on Monday signed nose tackle Steve Fifita, who was waived by the Dolphins last Tuesday.
Terms were not disclosed.
Fifita, 25, played in 13 games for the Dolphins last season, recording 11 tackles, as reported by Yahoo.com.
Pats' Hobbs Has Second Surgery
New England cornerback Ellis Hobbs underwent a second surgery this offseason in March, according to the Boston Globe.
Hobbs has surgery on his shoulder in February, and now it has been confirmed that he had a procedure to repair a sports hernia in March.
He is expected to be ready for the team's training camp in July.
In the event that Hobbs isn't able to recover from either surgery, the Patriots have added depth at corner with Fernando Bryant, Jason Webster and Lewis Saunders.
