Will The Patriots Be Able To Afford Moss?

Oct 4, 2014 7:01 AM

Because of Randy Moss' resurgence in New England, questions are being raised if the franchise will be able to retain him beyond this season. When the Patriots acquired Moss in April, he had two years remaining on his contract and was scheduled to earn $21 million over the 2007-08 seasons. But he agreed to a restructured contract - a one-year, $2.5 million deal that included a $500,000 roster bonus and $2 million in incentives - to consummate the trade. According to the NFL's collective bargaining agreement, a player cannot renegotiate his contract more than once in a one-year period if it will cause an increase in his salary. So in Moss's case, if he hoped to sign an extension that would increase his salary, it would have to come after the season.

Pats Claim Jets Videotaped At Foxboro In 2006

Aug 12, 2014 10:45 AM

The Patriots reportedly caught the Jets illegally videotaping during a game last season in Foxborough, Fox Sports.com reported on Sunday. Suspiciously, the report, quoting unidentified sources, surfaced more than a week after the Patriots were busted by the Jets for spying at the season opener. Bill Belichick and the team received heavy sanctions from the NFL. The Patriots didn't make a stink last year with the NFL, the report said. They simply put a stop to it. The Pats apparently didn't confiscate any evidence. GM Mike Tannenbaum, reached by the Daily News, said, "There's nothing to the story."

Case Closed, Spy Gate Tapes Destroyed

Oct 4, 2014 6:58 AM

The NFL has received and destroyed all the videotapes, notes and documents it requested and received from Patriots coach Bill Belichick in the wake of Camera-gate, and the case appears closed. According to a league statement released yesterday through NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, the Pats complied with commissioner Roger Goodell?s request and vowed they haven?t kept anything behind. ?The Patriots have fully cooperated and complied with the requirements of the commissioner?s decision,? the statement said. ?All tapes, documents and other records relating to this matter were turned over to the league office and destroyed, and the Patriots have certified in writing that no copies or other records exist. League policies on in-game videotaping and audio communication will continue to be closely monitored and strictly enforced with all 32 teams.?

NFL Investigating Pats' Tape Leak To Fox

Oct 4, 2014 6:59 AM

Concerned that the videotape seized from the Patriots ended up in the hands of Fox Sports, the NFL is conducting an internal investigation as to how the tape was released. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league is "very concerned; it should not have happened." Portions of the video, seized from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella during the Sept. 9 season opener against the Jets, were aired on Fox's pregame show this past Sunday. The footage showed Jets assistant coaches signaling to players on the field, then panned to the scoreboard to indicate what down it was and what distance was needed to reach a first down.

Belichick Can Deduct Fine From Income Taxes?

Oct 4, 2014 7:50 AM

According to tax experts, Bill Belichick probably can deduct his $500,000 fine for violating NFL rules on his taxes as a work expense. While some professors questioned whether a fine for "cheating" was an ordinary expense, Mike McIntyre of Wayne State University said that was wrongheaded. "The fine was for violating a rule, not for cheating. The Patriots were not accused of cheating by the commissioner and were not fined for cheating," McIntyre wrote.

Report: Rodney Harrison Bought HGH In 2004

Jun 14, 2014 5:51 AM

Days before the Patriots beat the Tennessee Titans at a freezing Gillette Stadium in the 2004 playoffs, safety Rodney Harrison placed his first order for HGH, according to a story in Sunday?s Albany Times Union. The story, which cites unnamed law enforcement sources, said Harrison received a package of preloaded syringes at his home about two weeks before the Patriots beat the Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Harrison would go on to make several discreet calls placing more orders over the next three years, the paper reported. Harrison admitted to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in late August that he received illegal drugs and was suspended for the first four games of the season. He denied ever taking steroids, but in a statement on Aug. 31 said he took the drugs to help recover from the injuries he sustained over a 13-year NFL career. ?My purpose was never to gain a competitive edge,? he said.

Brady: Charges Are Absurd

Oct 4, 2014 7:54 AM

Tom Brady hasn?t said much about the specific charges of cheating levied against his coach and team in wake of Camera-gate. But yesterday, during his weekly appearance on WEEI?s ?Dennis & Callahan Show,? the Patriots quarterback finally loosened up a bit, shooting down the notion that he was getting information piped into the headset in his helmet after the opposing team?s defensive signals were being deciphered via illegal videotaping. Brady said it was ?absurd? to think that he was getting in-game information. ?By no means am I sitting here getting plays and getting defenses and checking plays based on defenses that I?m getting. That?s completely absurd,? Brady said. ?If that was the case, I think that?s just ridiculous. You know, I hear other players, based on what I?ve heard on television, that ?Brady?s getting defenses.? I?m saying, ?That?s just ridiculous.?

Belichick Says He'll Turn Over Materials In Spy Case

Oct 4, 2014 8:03 PM

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Monday he would comply with the NFL's latest request in its spying investigation to provide any notes or tapes made from video recordings similar to those that drew a serious penalty against him and the team. "Of course," he said firmly when asked about the request for materials. Last Thursday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell fined Belichick $500,000 and the team $250,000 for violating a league rule that prohibits clubs from using a sideline camera to videotape the opponent's sideline. New England also would forfeit a first-round draft pick next year if it makes the playoffs or a second- and third-rounder if it doesn't.

Sources: New England Gives Belichick Long-Term Extension

Oct 31, 2014 8:37 AM

The legitimacy of the Patriots' accomplishments under Bill Belichick might be in question these days, but the coach's future in New England should not be. Belichick will be the Patriots' head coach for the foreseeable future after agreeing to a long-term extension. Belichick and Patriots ownership recently agreed to a long-term contract extension. The pact will keep Belichick on New England's sideline through at least the 2013 season, according to league sources and sources close to the coach. The deal was agreed to before the recent "spying" scandal in which the Patriots were punished by the NFL. It's unclear how many years Belichick had remaining on his previous deal, as he and ownership like to keep details of the coach's contract private.
