Todd Gurley: 2016 Season 'Like A Nightmare'

Jan 24, 2017 6:13 PM

Todd Gurley had a yards-per-carry average of just 3.2 in his second NFL season with the Los Angeles Rams.

Gurley was asked to categorize his 2016 season.

"Like a nightmare. I still can't believe the season," Gurley said. "It was definitely a tough year, a learning experience for me. To be 4-12 this year? I don't want to feel that feeling again."

Gurley made news in December, describing the Rams' attack as a "middle school offense."

Chargers Abandon New 'LA' Logo

Jan 14, 2017 9:22 PM

The Los Angeles Chargers have already abandoned their much-derided 'LA' logo that appeared to be a blend of the Los Angeles Dodgers' and Tampa Bay Lightning logos.

“The logo that was revealed on Thursday was meant to help launch our brand into the market and supplement — not replace — our official team marks,” Chargers president of business operations A.G. Spanos said in a statement provided to PFT. “Clearly, we miscalculated how the logo would be received, and we’ve taken it out of the rotation.”

A.G. Spanos emphasized that this is the identity of the team. “If we make a mistake, we own it, learn from it, and move on without looking back,” he said.

Spanos said that the team may “take another shot” at an L.A. logo “down the road,” and that the franchise is considering ways to involve the community’s voice in the process.

“If the ultimate outcome of this episode is something really special that L.A. fans help create and truly love, that’s a win,” Spanos said.

Wade Phillips Agrees To Become Defensive Coordinator Of Rams

Jan 13, 2017 12:32 AM

Wade Phillips has agreed to join the Los Angeles Rams as defensive coordinator.

Phillips will assist 30-year-old head coach Sean McVay.

Phillips takes on the role vacated by Gregg Williams, who left to become defensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns last week.

Phillips traditionally runs a 3-4 defense, but the Rams mainly used four defensive linemen and two linebackers under Williams this past season, while finishing 16th in DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average).

Josh McDaniels Prefers 49ers' Job Over Rams, Jaguars

Jan 8, 2017 11:01 AM

Josh McDaniels would prefer to join the San Francisco 49ers if he decides to leave the New England Patriots, according to a source.

McDaniels will interview with the 49ers, Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday near the Patriots' facility.

The 49ers are the only team also with a general manager opening. That vacancy combined with Jed York's commitment to patiently rebuilding and their status as a marquee franchise makes them more attractive to McDaniels than Los Angeles and Jacksonville.

McDaniels, who has served as New England’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach since 2012.

ESPN analyst and former NFL executive Louis Riddick, who reportedly will interview with the 49ers next week, has been an avid fan of McDaniels on social media. Riddick and McDaniels also have strong ties to New England head coach Bill Belichick.

Kevin Demoff: Rams Don't Need A Rebuild

Jan 5, 2017 10:38 AM

The Los Angeles Rams went 4-12 in 2016 after a 3-1 start and will hire a new head coach this offseason, but COO Kevin Demoff doesn't believe they will be undergoing a rebuild.

"I think this team has talent, still has a very young core at its heart, and we need to find our way," Demoff told ESPN.com's Alden Gonzalez. "But this is not a rebuild to me whatsoever. This is maximizing the talent we have. And we do have to go into the offseason and improve our personnel across the board. It's what we said when we made the coaching change. It's not just a coaching issue. We need to get better on the personnel side."

Aaron Donald and Todd Gurley are a pair of talented, foundational players but there's not the same type of depth most playoff teams have on their rosters.

"Every year in the NFL you should be able to compete," Demoff said. "And I think the hard part about the NFL is looking at teams who go from worst to first, how competitive they get quickly, and making that push."

Kyle Shanahan Believed To Prefer Broncos' Job

Jan 4, 2017 7:05 PM

Kyle Shanahan could have a number of options this offseason as he's set to meet with the Los Angeles Rams, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos.

The Broncos appear to the frontrunner where his father, Mike Shanahan, coached for several seasons.

"The word around the league right now," Mike Garafolo said, "the word with people involved in coaching searches and gathering all of this information is that that's the job Shanahan has his eyes on -- going to Denver where his father coached."

Shanahan is currently offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons.

No Teams Finish 2016 In Top-10 In Both Offensive, Defensive DVOA

Jan 3, 2017 2:01 PM

The NFL has very few teams this season that excel in all facets of the game. Further evidence of this issue shows itself in the fact that there is only one team ranking in the top-10 in both Football Outsiders' Offensive and Defensive DVOA.

Last season, the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs ranked in the top-10 on both sides of the ball.

The Chiefs were the closest team to finish in the top-10 in both Offensive and Defensive DVOA at 13th and 14th.

The New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys finished the season ranked first and second in both Total DVOA and Weighted DVOA.
