The Kansas City Chiefs and Eric Berry have agreed upon a six-year, $78 million deal.
The contract will make Berry the NFL's highest paid safety.
The deal includes $40 million guaranteed and a $20 million signing bonus.
The Kansas City Chiefs are negotiating with Eric Berry to make him the highest-paid safety in the NFL, according to a report.
The deal could be reached before Wednesday's deadline to franchise tag players.
Berry was hit with the franchise tag last season and said that he didn't want to play under the designation again in 2017.
"I'm going to keep being patient because you never know," Berry told the Kansas City Star on Sunday. "Last year I thought one thing and it didn't happen. So I'm not getting my hopes up; I'm looking at it logically."
The Kansas City Chiefs are finalizing a five-year, $41.25 million extension with Laurent Duvernay-Tardif.
A sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Duvernay-Tardif has started 30 games over the past two years after essentially redshirting as a rookie.
Duvernay-Tardif has become one of the NFL's best run blockers at right guard.
Duvernay-Tardif is also a medical student at McGill University in Montreal.
Clark Hunt is fine with the Kansas City Chiefs sticking with Alex Smith as their starting quarterback.
Tony Romo has been linked to the Chiefs.
"I would just reiterate what Andy [Reid] has said several times throughout the offseason, which is he's very happy with Alex and Alex is going to be our starter going into 2017," Hunt said.
Eric Berry, who played under the franchise tag with the Kansas City Chiefs last season, isn't optimistic about agreeing to a long-term deal prior to the 2017 campaign.
The deadline for teams to use the franchise tag is Wednesday.
"I'm going to keep being patient because you never know," Berry said. "Last year I thought one thing and it didn't happen. So I'm not getting my hopes up; I'm looking at it logically."
Berry said his agent and the team have been discussing a potential new deal.
The All-Pro safety also reiterated that he would sit out rather than play under the franchise tag again -- a one-year deal that would pay him almost $13 million this time around.
The Kansas City Chiefs have signed C.J. Spiller.
The Chiefs are Spiller's fourth team in the last five months.
Spiller was a first-round pick in 2010.
If the Dallas Cowboys release Tony Romo, there is already a list of teams that are rumored to be potential destinations.
The Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans make the most sense, according to Peter King.
Romo doesn't want to play for a rebuilding team and with a third child on the way he wouldn't want to be too far from his family.
Jamaal Charles has played in only eight games over the past two seasons due to knee injuries, but he wants to continue his playing career in 2017.
The Kansas City Chiefs could save over $6 million under the cap by releasing Charles.
“He’s working like the dickens to get himself ready for ’17,” John Dorsey said, via Terez Paylor of the Kansas City Star. “We’ll see what happens in March, but right now I see him as a Chief.”
Kansas City would surely like to renegotiate their contract with Charles.
Eric Berry played last season under the Kansas City Chiefs' franchise tag, but he isn't willing to do so again.
"I'm definitely not going to play under the franchise tag this year," Berry told the NFL Network. "I want to end my career in Kansas City. I want to play there. I love the city, I love the vibe. I love my teammates. I really look at them more than teammates. We've been through a lot, and they supported me a lot.
"But I don't feel comfortable playing under the franchise tag this year."
The Chiefs designated Berry as their franchise player last year after the sides couldn't agree on a long-term contract. He made $10.8 million.
