Jamaal Charles will miss Sunday's game against the Houston Texans but is expected to make his season debut in Week 3.

Charles, who missed most of last season after tearing the ACL in his right knee in Week 5, is ready to play, but the Chiefs are being cautious and want him to be fully healthy before he returns.

Spencer Ware took most of the carries, finishing with 70 yards rushing, 129 yards receiving and a touchdown in Week 1 for the Chiefs.

Justin Houston, Chiefs Restructure Contract To Create More Cap Space

Sep 15, 2016 12:19 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have restructured the contract of Justin Houston.

The Chiefs converted $6 million of Houston's base salary into a bonus that boosts their cap space for this season above $11 million. Houston’s cap hits for the next four seasons will go up by $1.5 million as a result of the move.

The Chiefs can use the cap space during the season or roll it over into 2017.

Houston is on the physically unable to perform list after having ACL surgery during the offseason.

Houston signed a six-year, $101 million deal in 2015.

Chiefs Likely To Use Running Back By Committee Approach

Sep 7, 2016 9:01 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs plan on using a running back by committee approach this season as Jamaal Charles works his way back from a torn ACL.

Charles is unlikely to play in Week 1.

Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware combined for more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, most of them after Charles went down in Week 5.

"I wish I could put them all out on the field," Chiefs running backs coach Eric Bieniemy said with a smile. "We come out with a personnel group and call it 'Cadillac' or 'Jet' personnel and get them all out there. Let's just go line up and play ball."

Andy Reid has frequently distributed carries amongst multiple running backs throughout his coaching career.

Jamaal Charles Could Miss Week 1

Sep 3, 2016 10:43 AM

Jamaal Charles could miss Week 1 of the regular season.

"I think Jamaal is going to need a little time to keep working to get himself back," Andy Reid said. "We'll see how he does after a couple of days off."

Charles continues to rehab from an ACL tear he suffered in Week 5 last season.

Spencer Ware would likely start for the Chiefs if Charles sits. Ware had 403 yards on 72 attempts (5.6 average) last season.
