Chiefs Draft Choice Will Depend On Lions

Nov 14, 2014 3:55 AM

The Chiefs are hoping that the Lions will take quarterback Matthew Stafford with the first overall pick, allowing them to have their pick of defensive players. St. Louis has the second overall pick, and are expected to select a tackle after releasing veteran Orlando Pace. "Certainly the tackle spot we've got to address," St. Louis coach Steve Spagnuolo said last week. "You've got to build with the linemen first. Offensively and defensively. To me, that's always a focus."

Haley: Cassel Is A Lot Like Warner

Nov 14, 2014 3:56 AM

New Chiefs coach Todd Haley sees a lot of Kurt Warner in quarterback Matt Cassel. "I just came off two years of working with one of the best guys I've ever been around in Kurt Warner," said Haley, who was Arizona's offensive coordinator the last two seasons. "In 'best guys,' I mean guys that are into football, like to talk about football. It's not about much else for Kurt Warner. This Matt Cassel feels and acts a lot the same way. He is football 24/7 to the point where I've had to pull back the reins on him a couple of times and say, 'Listen, Matt. These next couple of months are about getting in shape and getting your body ready for the season. There's time enough for football.' "He's all about football. I've been telling everyone I hope he can play because he's got all of the intangible things you get excited about as a coach."

Report: Gonzalez Open To Trade Talk

Feb 14, 2014 3:02 AM

Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez reportedly wants to be traded if the right deal can be made, which contradicts comments made by owner Clark Hunt on Tuesday. The source said that Gonzalez was surprised to hear that Hunt had said the Chiefs were definitely not going to trade him. "If the right deal can be made, Tony very much wants the Chiefs to trade him," the person said. "Tony is not demanding a trade. Tony cherishes the time he's spent with the Chiefs and he loves the way he's always been treated by the fans there. But he knows of some other teams that would be interested in him and if the right deal can be made, he wants it to be made."

Hunt: Chiefs Want Gonzalez, Hope To Keep LJ

May 11, 2014 8:46 AM

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt says that the organization wants to keep future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez. "We certainly will not seek a trade for Tony," Hunt said. "I think he's excited about the changes we've made here. I think he recognizes that with Todd as the head coach, we're going to have an exciting offense and one that will feature the passing game. No matter our starting quarterback, it will be someone who will look his way quite a bit." Hunt also said that he hopes running back Larry Johnson will remain with the team. "It's still my hope Larry will be a part of this team next season," Hunt said. "We all saw the comments he made at the end of the season and repeated about a month later. Those were disappointing. Recently, I've heard he's excited about being a Kansas City Chief again and expects to be in the offseason program and help us be successful."

Belichick: Talk That He Helped Pioli Is 'Ludicrous'

Oct 6, 2014 2:35 AM

Patriots coach Bill Belichick can't believe rumors that he gave Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli a deal in the Matt Cassel trade last month. "It's pretty ludicrous," said Belichick. "I have all the respect in the world for Scott and everything that he's done. He's a great friend. He's a terrific executive and personnel manager, but I work for the Patriots. I have no loyalty to anybody or any team other than the New England Patriots. Everything I do is for our team to win and be successful. I can't imagine that anybody would think that's any different."

Pendergast Will Be Chiefs' Defensive Coordinator

Nov 7, 2014 2:30 PM

Clancy Pendergast, who spent the last five years as the defensive coordinator of the Cardinals, has officially been given the same role with the Chiefs. Gary Gibbs, another candidate, will coach linebackers under new head coach Todd Haley. "We had two guys who had come from being coordinators, and I have a history with both of them," said Haley. "The fact Clancy and I were together the last two years with Arizona and he was such an integral part of that Super Bowl run. ... It was a tough decision because they are both great coaches. It was a win-win situation, no matter what we did."
