Tuaolo: There Are More Than 10 Gay Players In The NFL

Oct 8, 2014 8:11 AM

Esera Tuaolo, who came out of the closet after his NFL career ended, wasn't shocked by Larry Johnson's recent gay slur. "It seems like every single season I'm getting phone calls about some athlete saying a gay slur, and using the word 'gay' and 'faggot' and 'homo' and 'queer' in such a negative term," Tuaolo said in an interview with the Kansas City Star. "There are gay athletes in the NFL and in baseball and in the NHL ... it's so crippling to someone who is going to work knowing there is no support in their organization. What is also crippling to an athlete is hearing slurs like that thrown around like it's just the thing to do. When you use the term 'gay' or 'faggot' or 'queer' and you use it in a negative term, it's the same as calling a woman a 'bitch.' Or the same as calling an African-American the n-word. It's demeaning to another human being. And it's not right." He estimates that there are more than 10 players in the NFL that are homosexual. "I'm not going to tell you how many," he said. "The guys who are in contact with me ... and there are others who are anonymous."

Haley's Father: 'Todd Was Into Football Always'

May 17, 2014 7:05 AM

Todd Haley's father defended his lack of background actually playing football in an interview this week. ?Todd was into football always. The way we lived, it was different, that?s all,? Dick Haley told The Associated Press. ?I thought it was more important to come with me than to stay at home and go to high school football practice. And he would be in training camp with me before that. Whether that?s right or wrong, that?s what I thought. That was me dictating. When you?re 14 or 15 years old, you?re going to do what your folks tell you.?

Johnson Won't Be In Kansas City Long-Term

Jul 16, 2014 10:55 PM

Earlier this week I spoke with a Chiefs team source who advised me that the franchise was set to release embattled RB Larry Johnson following the resolution of a team and league investigation into his recent behavior. The team has now suspended Johnson until Nov. 9th, causing him to lose two game checks. Johnson?s agent, Peter Schaffer, has declared that they will appeal the suspension. I contacted the same source this morning, and his response indicated that the long-term situation in Kansas City does not include Larry Johnson. When I asked if that meant a release following the suspension, he responded that is ?still an open possibility? but not a given. Other Chiefs staffers I contacted refused comment at this time.

Chiefs To Release Larry Johnson

Oct 21, 2014 2:36 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs will sever ties with problematic running back Larry Johnson, according to a team source that spoke to RealGM's Jeff Risdon on Tuesday afternoon. The league and the team are investigating a pair of recent incidents, including one where Johnson used a gay slur. This is not the first time Johnson has gotten himself in trouble by using a gay slur, having had to apologize for the same offense last season. He was forced to apologize for this, as well as for negative comments directed at head coach Todd Haley. Haley has thus far refused comment. The team has barred Johnson from any contact with the team. This is a precursory move before the team formally releases Johnson before the end of the week, according to the source. Part of the delay in releasing him involves going through the NFL?s disciplinary investigation, but the source was adamant that Larry Johnson has played his last game in Kansas City.

LJ Rips Haley On Twitter

Feb 16, 2014 11:22 AM

Larry Johnson ripped Todd Haley on his Twitter account hours after Kansas City's loss to the Chargers. One tweet read: "My father got more (credentials) than most of these pro coaches." That is followed by: "My father played for the coach from "remember the titans". Our coach played golf. My father played for redskins briefley. Our coach. Nuthn." "I talked to Larry about it and he was focusing more on pumping up his father than anything else," Johnson's agent Peter Schaffer said. "He wasn't trying to downgrade anyone ... yes, everyone is frustrated after a loss like this but I wouldn't put too much into it."
