Edwards Wants Holmes Back

Jul 22, 2014 4:54 PM

Herm Edwards met with Holmes last week. Spotted at Arrowhead Stadium before jumping on an elevator to see the new coach, Holmes said he was feeling fine. But Holmes, a three-time Pro Bowler, will undergo one more round of neurological tests in the coming weeks to determine whether he'll play again. "It was a good conversation," Edwards said of his meeting with Holmes. "Obviously, he's going to have to make a big decision. If I know Priest Holmes, I think he'll be back. "He is going to be a big part of our offense. But at this point, I think it's Larry's turn to be the starter. It's his job to keep. And I think when you understand that, that's the mind-set he needs to have and it's something I think he's looking forward to doing." Asked whether Holmes could play a Marshall Faulk-type of role as a third-down back, Edwards said, "At this point, we haven't had an offensive staff meeting. So for me to tell you that would be my opinion, and I don't really go about doing things that way."

Chiefs Tell Johnson He's Their Starter

Jul 22, 2014 4:54 PM

Larry Johnson will be the Kansas City Chiefs starting running back next season regardless of Priest Holmes' health. Johnson said new coach Herman Edwards gave him the role during their first meeting Tuesday. "He told me I would be the guy going into training camp and that I should start the season prepared to start," Johnson told the Topeka Capital-Journal. Johnson finished the season with nine straight 100-yard games, 1,750 yards and 20 touchdowns (plus one receiving) after Holmes was put on the disabled list Nov. 9 with head and neck trauma. "[Edwards] said, I want to tell you this now that when we get going, you'll have to be the guy on this team who is the leader and gets things done," Johnson added Wednesday on ESPN's "Cold Pizza."

Larry Johnson Assault Case Dismissed

Jul 22, 2014 4:55 PM

An assault case was dismissed against Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, who had been accused of shoving a woman in a bar. The case was thrown out Tuesday, municipal court administrator Bernard Schneider said Wednesday. He was unable to provide further information, and a message left with Johnson's attorney was not immediately returned. A woman from Overland Park, Kan., had contended that Johnson shoved her at a Kansas City bar. The woman said she had been involved with the player for more than two years. The case was being watched by prosecutors in Johnson County, Kan., who could reinstate a 2003 charge accusing Johnson of slapping a woman in his Leawood home and threatening her with a gun.

Chiefs Keep Cunningham As Defensive Coordinator

Jul 22, 2014 4:54 PM

Among the first moves that Herm Edwards made on a Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff was to make no move at all at defensive coordinator. Edwards will retain incumbent defensive boss Gunther Cunningham, with whom he has some history, and whom Kansas City veterans urged their new head coach to keep. Kansas City ranked No. 25 in total defense in 2005, but the consensus around the NFL was that the revamped unit demonstrated progress. By keeping Cunningham, 59, Edwards is hoping that continuity will allow the defense to progress even further in 2006. The two coaches share many philosophies, although Cunningham might have to make alterations if the Chiefs are the employ the "cover two" scheme that Edwards has favored.

Chiefs And Edwards Reach Agreement On Deal

Oct 29, 2014 3:35 AM

Former Jets coach Herman Edwards has reached a verbal agreement in principle with the Kansas City Chiefs on a four-year, $12 million dollar contract to become their head coach, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported. The 51-year-old Edwards will receive a raise over the $2 million per year that he was making as Jets coach. The Chiefs received permission Friday morning to talk with Edwards after the NFL office gave the OK for the Chiefs to compensate the Jets with a fourth-round choice in the 2006 draft. Edwards will replace Dick Vermeil, who resigned after five years and led the Chiefs to a 10-6 record. They were the only 10-win team not to make the playoffs.

Chiefs, Edwards Close To Contract Agreement

May 17, 2014 8:17 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs were close to coming to terms with Herman Edwards on a contract that would make him their next head coach, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Saturday night. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations, said the team was hopeful of finishing the deal Sunday and formally introducing Edwards on Monday. "There is reason to hope that something will be done by the first of the week," the person said. "But reports that an agreement has been reached are simply not correct." The two sides are reportedly talking about an agreement that would give the 51-year-old Edwards between $4 million and $5 million a year, a hefty raise over the $2 million per year that he was making as Jets coach. The Chiefs received permission Friday morning to talk with Edwards after the NFL office gave the OK for the Chiefs to compensate the Jets with a fourth-round choice in the 2006 draft.

Chiefs Trying To Get Edwards From Jets

Jul 22, 2014 5:12 PM

It appears the Kansas City Chiefs are making a serious run at Herman Edwards. WFAN Radio is reporting that the Chiefs are negotiating a deal for Edwards, who has served as coach of the New York Jets for the last five seasons. Since Edwards has two years left on his contract, the Jets are entitled to compensation from Kansas City. Edwards worked in several different capacities with Kansas City from 1990-95 and has maintained a close friendship with Chiefs president Carl Peterson. The Chiefs gave up a second- and third-round draft pick as compensation to the St. Louis Rams when they hired Dick Vermeil as coach in 2001.

Vermeil To Retire

May 19, 2014 12:33 AM

Dick Vermeil will retire after the season as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, one of his players told The Associated Press on Saturday night. The player, who asked that his name not be used until after the announcement was official, said he was present when Vermeil broke the news during a team meeting earlier in the day. The Kansas City Star first reported that Vermeil was leaving, quoting team official Lynn Stiles. The 69-year-old Vermeil, the NFL's oldest head coach, could end his career on Sunday when the Chiefs (9-6) face Cincinnati in their final regular-season game. But Kansas City could still make the playoffs with a win and Pittsburgh loss to Detroit. Stiles, who was at meeting, said Vermeil appeared at peace with his decision. "I know so. ... It's the right thing for him to do, for his family, and it's the right thing to do for the organization," said Stiles, the Chiefs' vice president for football operations Vermeil's wife, Carol, told the AP that he was not available for comment.
