Vermeil Upset With Baily Comments

May 18, 2014 12:48 AM

Chiefs' coach Dick Vermeil is upset with comments made during Monday night?s game made by Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey while wearing a microphone. "The way they played up there in Kansas City, it ain't the same, though," said Bailey, who was miked for Monday Night Football. Speaking to teammates on the Denver bench after the Broncos had taken control of the game in the first half, Bailey was clearly heard to say, "They're playing a little different. They're not playing as hard. I ain't going to relax, though." Vermeil tried to downplay Bailey's remarks, but was clearly irritated. "That's why I don't allow players to be miked. I don't know what [Bailey] was referring to. That's a player's opinion," he said.

Chiefs? DT Sims To Be Out Six Weeks Or More With Foot Injury

May 18, 2014 6:05 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without defensive tackle Ryan Sims for at least six weeks if not the whole season because of a severe foot injury suffered on the first series of the team's season-opening victory over the New York Jets last week. "We lost Ryan Sims for a minimum probably of six weeks, and it may be for the season, you never know," coach Dick Vermeil said. "And he was really having a great camp and preseason. He was playing extremely well when he went down early."

Chiefs Roaf And Surtain Will Most Likely Play This Sunday

Jul 13, 2014 1:28 PM

After losing four starters to injury in Sunday?s victory over the Jets, the Chiefs received good news when it was determined that the injures incurred by cornerback Patrick Surtain and fullback Tony Richardson were not serious and that the duo will probably play this week against Oakland. "I thought it might be popped, a tear where his muscle rolled up, that tissue, muscle tissue rolled up," Vermeil said. "But that did not happen." Instead, an MRI brought good news for a key member of the offensive line. "It could be labeled as more of a strain. Of course, he's the only one who can tell. It's his muscle," said Vermeil. "But the MRI indicates that to us. They felt better about it." Whether Roaf can play this week remains a big question mark. "We'll wait until tomorrow," Vermeil said. "Maybe he'll end up being just like Tony Richardson."

Larry Johnson Arrested Following Altercation With Girl Friend

Nov 8, 2014 8:22 PM

Running back Larry Johnson was arrested Monday night after an altercation with his girlfriend early Saturday morning at a Kansas City bar, the latest in a series of troubles with the law for Kansas City Chiefs players. Police Department spokesman Darin Snapp said Johnson turned himself in and was cited for domestic abuse assault. Johnson posted bond and was released, with a court date set for Sept. 20 on the misdemeanor charge. Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil, who said he only learned about Johnson's arrest on Tuesday, said his players know that anything they do -- or are accused of doing -- will be magnified because of who they are.

2005 To Be Vermeil?s Final Season

Nov 8, 2014 8:22 PM

Kansas City Chiefs president Carl Peterson does not expect to see coach Dick Vermeil on the Chiefs sideline for the start of the 2006 season. "I love Dick, but it would be hard for me to ask him to stay on any longer," Peterson said. "He turned 69 last month. Everything I've received from him to date is that he doesn't want to coach after this season, and I respect that." Peterson sites Vermeil?s wife Carol as a big reason for Dick to get out of coaching. "I've known Carol since UCLA [where he served as Vermeil's receivers coach in the mid-1970s before following him to the Eagles]," he said. "I talked to her when I first asked him to come here [in 2000], and again 2 years ago (when he signed a 2-year extension). "They have three kids and 11 grandchildren. They're all on the East Coast and two of them are very close to their home in Chadds Ford. I don't think I can ask Carol to go another tour with her being away from her grandchildren."

Trent Green Ready To Play After Circulation Restored

Sep 12, 2014 5:20 PM

Two weeks after undergoing surgery to restore circulation in his leg, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Trent Green pronounced himself 100 percent fit. ``I feel really good,'' he said Thursday. ``It's amazing how quick the turnaround has been, how quickly it came back.'' Doctors implanted a stent in an artery after conducting a battery of tests to learn why he was experiencing numbness in the left leg and foot. The surgery was performed on Aug. 30 and required an overnight hospital stay. When the Chiefs played St. Louis in their final preseason game Sept. 2, Green missed a start for the first time since he was acquired from the Rams in 2001. ``I haven't had any muscle soreness. My foot feels fine,'' he said. ``It's really amazing how quickly it recovers.'' He was taken off blood thinners this week and will no longer require them. ``I'll be fine, ready to go,'' he said. ``I took every snap (Wednesday), every drill the first unit ran. I'm taking everything today. I haven't had any setbacks.''

Kansas City Primed For A Superbowl Run

Nov 8, 2014 8:41 PM

Chiefs football has been something that Kansas City has thrived on every fall for many, many years, and every year the expectations are greater then the last. The question still remains...can the Chiefs finally pull it off this year and head to Detroit, Michigan for what is known as the greatest event in all of sports, the Superbowl. The Chiefs have every power available to them that a Championship team needs. For example: Priest Holmes alone is enough to carry this offense, with his explosive talent at runningback, not to mention the fact that Kansas City has the up and comer Larry Johnson, who last year led the Chiefs to a few major victories while Priest Holmes was injured. They also have Trent Green who is now in his 13th year and while some people call that old, I call it experienced. This guy knows the game of football and if he stays healthy he will be almost impossible to stop.

Chiefs Suspend OL Welbourn 4 Games For Steroid Violation

Jul 14, 2014 11:30 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs officially suspended offensive lineman John Welbourn for the season?s first four games for violation of the league?s steroid policy. Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said: ?It hurts him, and it hurts us. It?s a shame. I believe him. He appealed it and didn?t win the appeal. He passed a lie-detector test, but he didn?t win the appeal. He fought it, and he lost. It doesn?t matter if it was taken accidentally or something was in something he took that wasn?t marked on the bottle. It doesn?t matter. There?s no tolerance, and we?ll have to live with that. ?I?m not very happy about it,? said Welbourn, who refused to comment further.

FredEx Cut By K.C.

Sep 5, 2014 1:17 PM

Sidelined for much of training camp by a knee injury, and unable to adequately compete for a roster spot, the wide receiver formerly known as "FredEx" won't be delivering for the Kansas City Chiefs this season. Team officials have apprised loquacious wide receiver Freddie Mitchell, signed as a free agent this spring after he was cut loose by the Philadelphia Eagles, that he has been released. The four-year veteran and former first-round draft choice did not appear in any of the Chiefs' preseason games. Mitchell, 26, had returned to practice only this week after injuring his right knee early in camp. The Chiefs will suffer no salary cap consequences, since Mitchell signed only a one-year contract, for the minimum base salary of $540,000. "They said it was a business decision," Mitchell told the Kansas City Star. "It wasn't about my athletic ability or anything else. They know I have a tear in my meniscus [cartilage]. There were no bridges burned. I'm going to get ready to play, and maybe I'll be back. I'm open to [all 32] teams right now, and there's no telling what I'll do."
