Dolphins Likely Out; Chiefs And Jets Now In Ty Law Hunt

Nov 5, 2014 3:41 PM

Conernerback Ty Law has indicated that he is not interested in playing for the Miami Dolphins after the team contacted him a second tome. ''Now Miami wants me to come back and visit,'' Law said during an interview with Peter King of Sports Illustrated. ``But if you can't afford Patrick Surtain, how can you afford me?'' ``The Jets are interested. Kansas City called again. Tampa Bay faxed an offer. Indianapolis is in it. I got an offer, sight unseen for $2.5 million for one year. If I wasn't ready, I'd just take it. But I'm going to be ready to play, and that's not the kind of contract I should get.

Chiefs? TE Wilson At Full Strength

May 22, 2014 6:40 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs? exciting new tight end Kris Wilson was forced to spend his rookie season on the sideline after injuring his leg in Kansas City?s pre-season finale versus Dallas. As a result, he has been working extra hard to become the player he was hyped to be for the 2005 season. ?I don?t know if he still has lingering effects of the leg or the confidence of moving around,? Chiefs quarterback Trent Green said. ?It seems like every week and every practice he gets more and more confidence. ?I think he has gotten a lot better this offseason.? ?I?m just going to try to do a lot of the same things I did last year,? Wilson said. ?I?m a lot further along mentally.

Will Shields Will Return For 13th Season

May 22, 2014 6:38 AM

Ten-time Pro Bowl guard Will Shields, the cornerstone of the Chiefs' offensive line and one of the most celebrated blockers in recent NFL history, is apparently set to return for his 13th season. After spending much of the offseason contemplating retirement, Shields told participants in his annual charity golf tournament Thursday that he will play at least one more season. Shields, who will turn 34 shortly after the regular-season opener, has not participated in any of the Chiefs' on-field activities in the offseason. Coach Dick Vermeil and general manager Carl Peterson had essentially excused Shields from the offseason program so that he could have time to determine his future. Vermeil had indicated in recent weeks, though, he was confident Shields would return.

Raiders Sign Fullback Omar Easy

Aug 29, 2014 8:29 AM

The Raiders have signed former Kansas City fullback Omar Easy to a one-year contract with a base salary of $455,000. Easy, 27, appeared in 37 games for the Chiefs in three seasons, primarily on special teams. The former Penn State standout notched four rushing attempts for one yard and had six receptions for 42 yards and one touchdown. He also had 11 special teams tackles. Originally a fourth-round choice in the 2002 draft, Easy became an unrestricted free agent this spring when Kansas City did not make him a restricted free-agent qualifying offer to retain a right of first refusal on him. To create a roster spot for Easy, the Raiders released defensive lineman Mark Word, signed as a free agent earlier this offseason.

Hakim originally agreed to a deal with Kansas City only to back out at the last second. Chiefs' CB Julian Battle Will Miss Season With Torn Achilles' Tendon

Oct 7, 2014 7:14 AM

Kansas City Chiefs' cornerback Julian Battle will miss the upcoming season with a torn left Achilles' tendon. Battle, who was working with the starters because of Eric Warfield's legal problems, was injured during a minicamp practice. "He's going to be operated on," Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said. "He popped his Achilles' tendon, and he's lost for the year." Battle, a third-round draft pick out of Tennessee in 2003, has played in 26 games for the Chiefs. He made one start last season, as a fifth defensive back.

Expect Hakim To Sign With Saints Soon

May 17, 2014 8:24 AM

Wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim has reached an agreement with the New Orleans Saints and is expected to sign soon. Hakim nearly signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, only to back out at the last minute. Some speculated he actually did sign the contract, however, that rumor appears to be false. Questioned on Friday as to whether Hakim had signed the contract, and then the Chiefs were forced to release him, coach Dick Vermeil said: "Almost."

Warfield Earns Back Starting Spot; Battle Sustains Achilles Injury

Aug 2, 2014 8:49 PM

After much speculation regarding his role with the Kansas City Chiefs, Eric Warfield has won back his starting cornerback spot, however, it was not in the manner he intended. The person who had originally taken his spot, Julian Battle, injured his Achilles Tendon in practice on Sunday. The extent of the injury is not yet known, but it is said to be fairly serious. ?It's a blow because he was in the starting position and he was maturing into a good football player,? coach Dick Vermeil said. ?He was doing everything right and working very hard, and his focus was outstanding. He was becoming what we thought he was going to become even a year ago. He was on his way. Right now, I've got a pit in my stomach. I get upset about it because it might be serious.?

FredEx To K.C.

May 22, 2014 1:33 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent wide receiver Freddie Mitchell Saturday, a month after the Eagles released the troublesome player. Mitchell was at Chiefs mini-camp in street clothes but will begin practicing Sunday, coach Dick Vermeil said. "We're very happy to have him here and I think he's happy to be here," Vermeil said. "He's in a good frame of mind and his attitude is very good." Mitchell, who played in 63 games in four seasons at Philadelphia, fell into disfavor with Eagles coaches and teammates after making a series of controversial and inflammatory statements. He insulted the Patriots secondary before the Super Bowl, and also called out New England coach Bill Belichick. He also criticized his teammates for not backing him and blasted quarterback Donovan McNabb for not throwing to him more. "The plays are going to be there for me to make," Mitchell said after the Chiefs went through a two-hour workout in front of about 15,000 fans. "I just want to help the team win and hopefully be utilized catching the ball. So it's going to be good. I'm happy to be here."

Leaving Vermeil At The Altar For The Big Easy

Jul 31, 2014 11:04 PM

Veteran free-agent wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim on Friday afternoon backed out of a contract agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs, a deal that would have reunited him with head coach Dick Vermeil. It is believed that Hakim, who had recently visited with New Orleans officials, will now sign with the Saints. "Az and his agent got together and they really felt his best situation was not here for him," Vermeil said following Friday's mini-camp practice, a session in which Hakim did not participate. "Then he and I discussed it. I told you all along that I wanted what was best for him, and I think he's going to end up in New Orleans." Hakim, 28, played the first two seasons of his NFL career under Vermeil, with the St. Louis Rams, who chose him in the fourth round of the 1998 draft. The two men forged a solid friendship and that relationship continued even after Vermeil temporarily retired from the NFL. Various media outlets, including ESPN.com, reported earlier this week that Hakim, who had verbally agreed to a one-year contract last week, had signed the deal. Asked Friday if Hakim had, indeed, signed the contract and then been released when he reconsidered it, Vermeil replied, "Almost."
