A.J. Bouye heads into free agency after his best year as a professional cornerback.

As of now the Houston Texans aren't expected to place the franchise tag on him, which is expected to be worth over $14 million for 2017.

"I talked to my agent, and I'm not mad that they probably won't franchise me, just because of how much the franchise tag is for a corner," Bouye said. "It's a lot. At the same time, the situation in Houston, money-wise, there's no telling what's going to happen. At the end of the day, I know they want to bring me back, but they have other things they have to address, which I totally understand."

Last year's game between the Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders played in Mexico City generated $45 million, according to a study commissioned by the NFL.

The 27-20 victory by the Raiders was attended by 76,473 at Estadio Azteca. It was the first NFL game to be played in Mexico since the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals played in the same stadium in 2005.

The Raiders will return to Mexico City next season and host the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.

The Texans have roughly $25 million in projected salary-cap space and it would cost just over $14 million to retain Bouye under a one-year franchise tender, all of which would count against the salary cap for the 2017 fiscal year.

Bouye declined a small, multi-year contract offer last spring to play this past season, betting on himself and instead playing under a one-year, $1.671 million salary.

The Texans have historically eschewed using the franchise tag.

Rick Smith was blunt in his assessment of what the Houston Texans need from their quarterbacks next season.

Osweiler completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,957 yards with 15 touchdowns and 16 interceptions and a quarterback rating of 72.2 in 15 games.

"We've got to get better production from the quarterback position," the general manager said. "We've got to get better production from all across our football team. And we've got to do a good job of analyzing our football team, and that's what we're doing now.

"We're spending the time evaluating our football team and trying to figure out where we're strong, where we're weak and how we can go about improving."

Bob McNair also said Wednesday that Osweiler needs to "step up."

The Houston Texans would like to sign DeAndre Hopkins to a contract extension this offseason.

Hopkins is set to play out this season under the fifth-year option that the Texans exercised last year.

Hopkins is open to an extension.

“I love this organization and what this team is doing,” Hopkins said, via the Houston Chronicle. “It seems like we’re getting better and better every year, so why not?”
