Aaron Rodgers Open To Reworking Deal If He Plays In 2023

Jan 25, 2023 8:03 AM

Aaron Rodgers has not decided whether he intends to play football in 2023 -- let alone with what team that would be.

However, he did acknowledge on the The Pat McAfee Show that his current contract probably isn't viable for the Green Bay Packers or any other team.

Rodgers has $59.465 million guaranteed if he plays in 2023, as part of the three-year, $150 million contract extension he signed in March. It carries a salary-cap charge of $31,623,570 for next season.

"There's a lot of teams, because of COVID, that are strapped, and you're seeing with a lot of different contracts, they're pushing more money out in deals," Rodgers said.

"They're creating void years to allow for an easier cap hit, so there would have to be some adjustments, for sure."

The contract as it currently exists makes it difficult, but not impossible, for Rodgers to be traded.

Aaron Rodgers Believes He Can Win MVP In Right Situation

Jan 18, 2023 10:25 AM

Aaron Rodgers isn't ready to make any decisions about his future, but the quarterback remains confident in his ability.

Rodgers threw for his fewest yards in a season in which he played at least 10 games and threw 12 interceptions (one off his career high).

"Do I still think I can play? Of course. Can I play at a high level? Yeah. The highest," Rodgers said on The Pat McAfee Show. "I think I can win MVP again in the right situation. Right situation, is that Green Bay or is that somewhere else? I'm not sure. But I don't think you should shut down any opportunity. But like I said during the season, it's got to be both sides actually wanting to work together moving forward."

Aaron Rodgers To Contemplate Future With Packers, 'Somewhere Else'

Jan 17, 2023 8:54 PM

Aaron Rodgers said on Tuesday he still thinks he can play in the NFL at a high level, whether it's for the Green Bay Packers or another team.

"I think I can win MVP again in the right situation," Rodgers said. "Right situation, is that Green Bay or is that somewhere else? I'm not sure. But I don't think you should shut down any opportunity. Like I said during the season, that's got to be both sides actually wanting to work together moving forward, and I think there's more conversations to be had."

Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst have expressed an interest in having Rodgers back. Last week, Gutekunst reiterated that the three-year, $150 million contract they gave to Rodgers last March was a commitment that "wasn't certainly for this year."

Packers Want To Keep Aaron Rodgers In 2023

Jan 13, 2023 5:34 PM

The Green Bay Packers are not interested in moving on from Aaron Rodgers this offseason.

"If we were? Sure, absolutely," Brian Gutekunst said during a 30-minute news conference to wrap up the season. "You've got to be honest with him, you know what I mean? I think he deserves that if we get to that point. We're not at that point."

Rodgers is not ready to say whether he plans to return for 2023 or if it will be with the Packers.

"I got to see what it feels like once I get away from this," Rodgers said after Sunday's loss to the Lions.

Rodgers is only one year into a three-year, $150 million extension he signed with the Packers last March. Rodgers would make a guaranteed $59.465 million if he played in 2023.

"We made a really big commitment to him last offseason, so I think as we did that it wasn't certainly for just this year," Gutekunst said of the recently completed 2022 season. "He's going to take his time, and the communication will be pretty constant as we move forward."

The Packers also must decide by early May whether to exercise the fifth-year option for 2024 on backup quarterback Jordan Love's contract. That would be worth around $20 million. Gutekunst has said previously that he could not foresee having both Rodgers and Love on the roster in 2024.

Matt LaFleur Open To Nathaniel Hackett Returning To Packers

Jan 10, 2023 8:07 AM

Matt LaFleur discussed the possibility of Nathaniel Hackett returning to the Green Bay Packers, after he was fired less than a year into his tenure as head coach of the Denver Broncos.

"I think I've definitely entertained all that," LaFleur said. "I think you can never have enough great coaches, and certainly you guys know how I feel about Nathaniel and the job he did here. But again, just getting started into the evaluation phase. I did talk to him after he got let go in Denver. I know that he needs some family time as well."

LaFleur called the offensive plays even when Hackett served as the Packers' offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021, and did so again last season with Adam Stenavich in the offensive coordinator seat.

Stenavich is expected to remain in that role whether Hackett returns or not.

Aaron Rodgers Says He Wouldn't Have Any Regrets Walking Away

Jan 9, 2023 9:17 AM

The Green Bay Packers lost to the Detroit Lions on Sunday night, a defeat that cost them a playoff berth.

The Packers would have punched their ticket to the postseason with a win. Instead, they finished 8-9 and missed for the playoffs for the first time in Matt LaFleur's four seasons.

"At some point, the carousel comes to a stop and it's time to get off, and I think you kind of know when that is," Rodgers said.

"And that's what needs to be contemplated. Is it time? Also, what's the organization doing? That's part of it, as well. But the competitive fire is always going to be there. I don't think that ever goes away. Sometimes it gets transferred, I think, to other things that might not ever fill that large void. But like I said, I feel good about what I've accomplished in this league and wouldn't have any regrets walking away. But I got to see what it feels like once I get away from this."

Last offseason, Rodgers announced his decision to return on March 8. He signed a three-year, $150 million contract extension shortly thereafter.

When asked what the determining factor will be, Rodgers said: "It's a feeling." He then proceeded to list several things that could influence that feeling.

"Do I feel like I have anything left to prove to myself?" he said. "Do I want to go back and gear up for another grind? Or is it time? Is time to step away? Is it time for another voice to be leading this team?

"I think I need to get away and contemplate those things. Those are real to me. I have a lot of pride in what I've accomplished in this league, but I'm also a realist, and I understand where we're at as a team. We're a young team; there could be some changes with some of the older guys, and it could be time to step away. But I could take some time and say hell no, man, I need to get back out there and go on another run. But I'll have to see what it feels like once I'm away from it."

Both teams are 8-8, but the Packers will clinch a postseason berth with a victory.

The Lions, however, need the Seattle Seahawks to lose to the Los Angeles Rams to keep their playoff hopes alive. That game will kick off at 4:25 PM ET.
