Aaron Rodgers: NBA Players Have More Leverage Than NFL

Aug 30, 2018 2:50 PM

Aaron Rodgers had hoped to get an opt-out in his new contract with the Green Bay Packers, or tie his salary to a percentage of the salary cap. While Rodgers signed the richest contract in NFL history, he was unable to get the Packers to agree to those concessions.

“I don’t think the NFL is ready for those type of contracts,” he said. “There’s language that need to change for those to become more standard, but there just isn’t the movement in that area on franchise side to do contract that allow players to have more of the leverage that NBA players have. Instead they would rather go traditional routes with large signing bonuses and prorate that over five years in order to minimize cap hits. That’s the desired approach and there wasn’t a lot of wiggle room in that area.”

Rodgers has a small ownership stake in the Milwaukee Bucks.

Rodgers has two seasons remaining on his current contract. Rodgers signed a $130.75 million deal in 2013 with a $35 million signing bonus and $54 million in guaranteed money.

Aaron Rodgers Says He Isn't At Odds With Packers Over Contract

Aug 21, 2018 8:29 AM

Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers have discussed a new contract for months. A deal hasn't yet materialized, but that doesn't mean the quarterback and team are at odds.

Rodgers told ESPN's Wilde and Tausch that he still believes an agreement can be made that benefits both sides.

"I don't think they would want to nickel and dime me, and I'm not trying to screw them," Rodgers said. "This is a partnership. That's the only way this is going to work, and the best way things work in this situation is we're in this together. If they make that financial commitment, that's what they're saying. And also there's an expectation I'm going to play well, and that's my side of the bargain."

Rodgers is due $20 million this year and $21 million next year under his current contract.

Aaron Rodgers: Criticism Of Young Receivers Isn't Personal

Aug 14, 2018 8:37 AM

Aaron Rodgers says he wasn't trying to send a message last week when he called the effort of the Green Bay Packers' young wide receivers "piss poor" after a practice.

"I hope we're not that soft," Rodgers said. "I hope we can hear comments or read comments and not get offended by things. It's a professional environment; it's not a personal environment. The things I'm saying, I don't have some vendetta against any player. I care about winning, No. 1, and I'm going to say and do the things that I feel like can advance us. It's going to be tough at some points. It's not a popularity contest all the time. Obviously, as a human, you like being liked and appreciated, but I'm trying to win games because that's my job."

Rodgers worked with the young pass catchers on the scout team last week since he wasn’t going to play in the first preseason game.

Aaron Rodgers Supports NBA Style Soft Cap For NFL

Aug 8, 2018 9:28 AM

Aaron Rodgers believes the NFL should eliminate its hard cap in favor of a soft cap system similar to the NBA. The NFL believes the hard cap creates parity.

“We have sort of a tough situation,” he said. “I think one thing you could definitely look at that would influence the way contracts are done is a hard cap versus a non-hard cap—like the NBA, where there’s a cap, then there’s luxury tax.”

Rodgers, who invested in the Milwaukee Bucks, believes teams that go above the cap should do with a penalty.

“I would allow teams to go over the cap knowing if they do, since there’s not a hard cap, they are going to be faced with some luxury tax issues and they’d change their strategy. It’s not like we’re hurting—just like the NBA, we’re not hurting for revenue. We’re doing excellent in the NFL and the NBA is doing fantastic as well.”

Aaron Rodgers Sees 'Piss Poor' Effort From Young Receivers

Aug 8, 2018 7:54 AM

Aaron Rodgers spoke out on Tuesday about the effort of the Green Bay Packers' young receivers during practice.

"I think it was one of the worst carded sessions we've had," Rodgers said. "I don't know how you can make it simpler. You literally have what the play would be in our terminology of the card. And the effort level was very low, especially what I'm accustomed to, having run that period for a number of years. It's not a good start for us on the carded period for the young guys. I think [DeAngelo] Yancey has really progressed, [Geronimo Allison], obviously 16 [Jake Kumerow]. But everybody else was piss poor."

Rodgers has been candid as of late. He expressed displeasure over the departure of Jordy Nelson and the fact that he hasn't finalized a contract extension.
