Clay Matthews: Green Bay's OLB Depth 'Not That Great'

May 30, 2018 9:31 AM

The Green Bay Packers didn't add a linebacker in free agency and only used the 248th draft pick on the position.

Clay Matthews believes the team has depth issues.

"Well, I wasn't surprised with the first two picks; I'll go ahead and say that," Matthews said of the Packers taking cornerbacks with their top two draft selections.

"But obviously, you look at the depth at the outside-linebacker position, and it's not that great. That's not a slight to the guys who are behind Nick and myself, but you look around the league, a lot of times they're rotating in pass-rushers. You can look a couple years ago when we had Mike Neal and Julius [Peppers] here, Datone [Jones] as well. We had a pretty good rotation. Sometimes I'm sure it doesn't work out the way in which [the front office wants], and obviously they only get so many picks and only have so much cap money to spend."

Green Bay ranked 17th in the league with 37 sacks last season.

Packers Not Expected To Sign Dez Bryant

May 15, 2018 4:57 PM

The Green Bay Packers are not expected to sign Dez Bryant, which contradicts a prediction from ESPN's Jason Witten that his former teammate would go there.

The Packers had some level of interest in Bryant when he was first release but they have signed drafted wide receiver J'Mon Moore in the fourth round, wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the fifth round and wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown in the sixth round.

Bryant remains a free agent after receiving initial interest from a number of teams, including the Packers and Ravens.

Mike McCarthy Believes DeShone Kizer Would Have Been 2018 1st Rounder

May 7, 2018 11:55 AM

DeShone Kizer will compete with Brett Hundely to become Aaron Rodgers' backup with the Green Bay Packers this year.

“In my opinion, if he was in that class this year,” McCarthy said, “he would’ve been part of that group of first four guys, or first five. I always felt there were five, the five quarterbacks, first-round guys.”

The “first four guys” McCarthy referenced were Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield (first overall, Cleveland), USC’s Sam Darnold (third, New York Jets), Wyoming’s Josh Allen (seventh, Buffalo) and UCLA’s Josh Rosen (10th, Arizona). The fifth was Louisville’s Lamar Jackson.

Kizer was the No. 52 pick in 2017 by the Browns. Kizer went winless in 15 starts for the Browns and then was traded to the Packers.

“I think he has exceptional arm talent,” McCarthy said. “What we’re asking him to do is, particularly the footwork and just how he fits the scheme, and how he operates is brand new to him. That always excites me, because when you see that guy has no experience or background but has the ability, to me that’s an opportunity for a lot of growth. So I think he has a bright future.”
