Alonzo Highsmith has decided to leave the Green Bay Packers to become the vice president of football operations for the Cleveland Browns.

Mike McCarthy Signed Extension With Packers During Season

Jan 2, 2018 2:06 PM

The Green Bay Packers signed Mike McCarthy to a one-year extension during the 2017 season.

The deal keeps McCarthy under contract through the 2019 season. McCarthy would have been entering the final year of his contract in 2018 without an extension.

The Packers want to keep McCarthy as coach even though they are seeking a new general manager with Ted Thompson being reassigned.

McCarthy is 131-78-1 (including 10-8 in the postseason) with one Super Bowl in his 12 NFL seasons.

Packers Demote Ted Thompson, Will Hire New GM

The Green Bay Packers have demoted Ted Thompson as general manager.

While Thompson will remain with the franchise, the Packers will hire a new GM.

The Packers have four strong internal candidates in Russ Ball, Brian Gutekunst, Alonzo Highsmith and Eliot Wolf, but the search also is expected to include outside candidates. That could include former Packers scouts Reggie McKenzie and John Schneider.

McKenzie and Schneider are currently general managers with the Raiders and Seahawks.

Thompson has been in charge of the Packers' football operations since 2005. His first-ever draft pick was Aaron Rodgers.
