Aaron Rodgers: Lack Of Job Security Reduces NFL Players' Activism

Aug 30, 2017 10:33 AM

Aaron Rodgers has said he envies the culture of the NBA in which their athletes are enabled to speak more freely about social issues.

"The guys who are most vocal in the NBA are the best players," said Rodgers.

In the feature, Mina Kimes pointed out to Rodgers that he obviously falls into that category of NFL players.

Rodgers believes that he can say what he wants but that it has to feel "authentic."

Rodgers was asked by Kimes why he thinks the NFL is more restrictive than the NBA.

"[In the NFL], if you're on the street, you're not getting paid unless you have some sort of bonus that goes into another year. So there's less incentive to keep a guy, which gives you less job security. Less job security means you've got to play the game within the game a little tighter to the vest," he says. "Part of it has a really great nature to it -- being a good teammate, being a professional -- the other part is not being a distraction. And I use 'distraction' as more of a league term."

Rodgers also believes Colin Kaepernick isn't currently on an NFL roster due to his political actions.

"I think he should be on a roster right now," Rodgers said. "I think because of his protests, he's not."

Bryce Treggs Fined $25,000 By NFL For Hit On Damarious Randall

Aug 21, 2017 6:06 PM

Bryce Treggs of the Philadelphia Eagles has been fined $25,000 by the NFL for his high hit on Damarious Randall.

Randall took a shot to the head as Treggs went high with a block during a three-yard LeGarrette Blount run in the first quarter. Randall suffered a concussion on the play and let Treggs know via Twitter that he thought the receiver's hit was dirty.

The Packers submitted videos of both hits to the NFL for review.

"If I turned them into the league, I don't think they're legal hits," coach Mike McCarthy said.

Brett Favre To Aaron Rodgers: 'Why Stop At 40?'

Aug 10, 2017 8:47 AM

Brett Favre believes that Aaron Rodgers has plenty of football left in the tank.

Rodgers, like Favre, has one Super Bowl win, but it's been six years since Green Bay's championship victory.

"Obviously, Aaron has carried the team for a long time; that's not going to change," Favre said. "That in itself is not enough -- at least it hasn't been, and it's been pretty good. As good as he is, I would've thought they would've won more than one by now. But I don't know if he can do anything else other than what he's done up to this point. It always seems like one piece of the puzzle is missing.

"You don't know what that is until you get it, like a Reggie White. You go, 'Oh, that's what we needed.' It remains to be seen what that is, whether it's a draft pick, a free agent, letting someone go, a coaching change -- I don't know."

On Tom Brady's 40th birthday last week, Rodgers said not only does he want to play until he's 40, but he wants to play for the Packers.

"Why stop at 40?" said Favre, who retired at age 41 but left Green Bay just two months before he turned 39 in a trade with the New York Jets. He then finished his career with the Minnesota Vikings.

Packers Nearly Traded Aaron Rodgers For Randy Moss In 2007

Aug 8, 2017 10:40 AM

In 2007, the Oakland Raiders were close to trading Randy Moss to the Green Bay Packers in a package that would have included Aaron Rodgers. Both Pro Football Talk and Michael Felger of the Boston Herald reported the Packers were ready to trade then-backup quarterback Rodgers for Moss.

The Raiders instead traded Moss to the New England Patriots for a fourth round pick that they used on John Bowie.

Moss agreed to restructure his deal with the Patriots and they went on to go 18-1.

Rodgers replaced Brett Favre as Packers' quarterback after the 2007 season.

The Raiders continued to search for a franchise quarterback until drafting Derek Carr in 2014.

Aaron Rodgers Hopes To Continue Playing Into 40s

Aug 3, 2017 5:04 PM

Aaron Rodgers would like to continue playing for another seven-plus seasons.

Rodgers is now 33 and remains one of the NFL's best quarterbacks.

"I do think it's realistic," Rodgers said. "I hope it's in this locker room, though. That would mean it's been at a high level. Like I said, hopefully Dec. 2 of 2024, help me out, 2023. Thank you."

Rodgers was drafted by the Green Packers in 2005 and backed up Brett Favre for several seasons.

For Rodgers to play until he's 40, he's going to need at least one more contract. He is signed through the 2019 season.
